Largest Particle Collider Conducts Successful Test

Not to mention that cosmic rays (which are actually just particles like those in the LHC) bombard our atmosphere constantly with higher energies than this machine is going to create, so if there were going to be a catastrophic black hole, it would have been made already.

Yup yup, I was going to let someone else mention that, as to not appear more insane then I already do.

:p

Curiosity is killing me. Even with whatever will happen, I want to see what happens.

funny thing is that there was actually a particle accelerator if i recall correctly in Texas, that was canceled, they dig the cavern and all, they even create a town! well it was suppose to be far far bigger than the LHC, what was the problem? budget! cuz the US wanted to build it on their own so...

Yes they were building one in Texas:
Kaku takes a different view: He said physicists will have to do a better job of explaining the potential payoffs if they expect taxpayers to keep covering the multibillion-dollar cost of exploring the scientific frontier. He pointed to the example of the Superconducting Super Collider — a project planned for Texas that would have been bigger than the Large Hadron Collider, but was canceled by Congress after $2 billion had been spent.

Moral of the story? Americans would rather the Euro's build a black hole under their countries instead of ours?

Funny how people talk about how safe LHC is when they are doing stuff no one but God has ever done before. I remember reading about the Manhattan Project where some of the scientist theorized that there was a chance that they might accidently spontaneously combust away the Earth's atmosphere but they went ahead and did it anyway. Truthfully, I am curious as to what they will discover...from the relative safety of the other side of the planet.

Guys this was a test, and it wasn't even a full power test. No particle collisions, just one-way less then full power particle firings. All you "see the world didn't end" people need to wait until they actually do a full power collision operation.

Today:
fire one particle at a time, at less than full power - ZERO risk

Later:
Fire two particles from opposite directions so they collide at full power - this is when the strangelets form turning us into zombies, or the black holes form and devour the earth.

I don't know how many if you are coast to coast am fans, but if you are, you should know the name Jonh Titor. To make a long story short, he claims to be a time traveller from the future.

LOL John Titor. I believe in you John, and your time traveling corvette.

Very well then... I'll keep my crowbar at my side for the next couple weeks. :p

is it me or when you first glance at an article about the particle collider the name Hadron stands out?? To me it seems as if its called the "Hardon Particle Collider"... lol

check out the last pic in this link:
http://www.cracked.com/article_16592_10-important-news-stories-as-depicted-by-5-year-olds.html

as for the LHC (or CERN in French), i've been following news about it excitedly. they hope to observe the hitherto theoretical Higgs boson, also called "the God particle," which is thought to be the subatomic particle that gives all matter its mass. that would be a huge step towards a unified field theory. as for the 'dangers,' i think it'll turn out that building the thing was more dangerous than running it (one man died in a construction accident). but i guess we'll know in another month.

Anyone mention yet that the full power test isn't until Oct 21st! That's the one that's most likely to be doom and gloom fun, that's if no terrorist blow CERN up by then.

LHC = Large Hardon Collider
CERN = European Organization for Nuclear Research

Someone mentioned wormholes.

O brother, you have no idea what your talking about...

I see, and you are the resident expert on worm holes? I say the Earth if flat and there are only 129 stars in the sky.

i still call bs on all this. who cares if there is universal theory... its not going to cure aids, cancer, or any other crazy shit.

i find this is like a new video card for l33t nerds that video cards are not even a concern for. will this stop americans from polluting the shit out their planet? will this stop the world from doing the same? will this stop kim il from ill?

meh... how do we know this is a bigger discovery then lets say atomic theory and dna? its like saying "oh if we new what "makes up dna" was made up of, then we could cure this or that"... but its not true. we cant even do less crazy shit yet.

meh rambling. 40bil beats the hell out of funding the war in iraq that has 0 humanitarian benefits and negative benefits aka costs. at least this would get the chair rolling... get it... chair.

Stop shitting on my country and move to China. Advancements in physics have always, I mean always trickeled down to improve the lives of the rest of humanity. No, it wont cure cancer or cure pollution, but it will make things better for everyone if for nothing else than improve our understanding of the way things are, which has been a driving force of humanity since the beginnings. If there is one thing that unites us it is the advancement of our understanding of science. Curiousity is univeral, and the things we discover move us forward.

Honestly if you feel that way, then stop using your computer. Cause guess where that tech came from. And trust me I wont miss you if you were to stop using the internet (guess where that came from as well)

Yes its all Americas fault. Fact is global warming is about as much of "in the moment" thing to say as "I'm a patriot cause I wear a flag pin" post 9/11. You hippies need to read some credible scientific studies of your own rather than reciting what ever you just heard on the 10 o'clock news as fact cause Joe Schmo said so:rolleyes:

meh... how do we know this is a bigger discovery then lets say atomic theory and dna?

Hence EXPERIMENTING. Wont know how big of a discovery it is until you try now will you.

Listen you neo-hippie, tell the millions of Iraqis who were suffering under Saddams rule that us going in there and taking him out had 0 humanitarian benefits.

With all that said I neither claim to support the LHC or whats going on in Iraq but some retards just need to be put in their place sometimes when they start to go running off at the mouth.

I agree can someone explain to me how this is going to help out humanity??

I don't think anybody thought that mold would lead to antibiotics either. Guess we never should have studied it in the first place because I guarantee you the first time somebody saw fur on their cheese they didn't think "hrm, I betcha we can save millions of lives with this".

I take it you don't work in the field of science, nor know what science is. Theories need to be tested. If things work out, it opens up a gateway for other scientists and engineers to test and create new things by employing the new ideas. If it doesn't work out, then they either tweak or just move on. I think trick_monkey says it best.

Take light for example. Pre-1900s there were huge discussions about if light were waves or particles? Who gives a shit right? Well, scientists and engineers like Maxwell, Planck, Einsten, de Broglie look into this and eventual deduce wave-particle duality, which then eventually led to Quantum Mechanics. QM is a very big reason why you enjoy all your nice little gadgets and quality of life today.

Let the big boys who understand their stuff do their jobs.

Everybody is ready for any problems that might arise..

..but with that health, I don't know.

Are you kidding? That guy can heal you and kick the crap out of the coming antlions!

There's a better thread on this in the Gen Mayhem section.

But some of the people against this have some very good points on worries of what COULD happen.

Really they don't know what is going to happen at this level of energy & collision. It could be fission reactions, black holes, etc.. Some have said that a mini blackhole if created (and grew exponentially) could "eat the earth in 50 months".

The outcome of the experiments are hoping to find other dimensions or explain unknown forces in the universe which may extend in to other dimensions, etc..

So this totally reminds me of a Doom / Half Life story line!!

I'm not going to start worrying until a big rabbit wakes me up and tells me the universe is going to end on a certain date.

Dude, someone needs to make a half-life map of the LHC complex!!!

Funny how people talk about how safe LHC is when they are doing stuff no one but God......

I stoped reading there.

I see, and you are the resident expert on worm holes? I say the Earth if flat and there are only 129 stars in the sky.

I know more than you think I do, or at least more than I think you think I know. :p

And believe whatever you will, for it matters not. ;)

I'm not going to start worrying until a big rabbit wakes me up and tells me the universe is going to end on a certain date.

Sweet, Donnie Darko reference. Personally more worried about following the white rabbit down the bunny hole, time, space and mind stuff.

The thing is, if this would destroy the world, then we would already see signs of it now. If you begin messing with time and space results and wakes will go both ways and the damage should appear before hand, but we won't notice, because to the damage has always been there. That or one day we wake up and we all have super powers.

Please don't turn this thread into religion. He was using that expression in the same way as the scientists on the LHC are calling the particle that they are looking for "Gods particle"

It's an expression used to describe the seriousness of the situation (this could potentially be pandoras box)

if it ends up destroying the world, i dont think anyone will have an opinion for or against it, because they will all be dead.

so big deal.

If "The Mist" scenario happens, then the French will get wiped out first.
