iPhone Ad vs. iPhone Reality

Please this is not dishonest. People do not buy and follow the word on high from Steve Jobs based on how Apple products actually work, they buy and blindly follow based on how Apple perceives them to work.

This by the way is the fundamental problem pc users have against Apple. If Macs really did everything Apple said they do exactly as they say, PC's would be history long ago. The reality is they don't and its two parts clever marketing to one part shiny cheap plastic. Oh and your a special person if you use a Mac.
-That a boy Stevie!

Some people don't want to see it from the other side, it might put a crack in the world that surrounds them.

As a stock holder in companies I want to know the good and the bad.

But from what I see, that IPhone add is total crap and I sent this video to about 50 people.

It is extremely misleading. The entire point of the ad is to show the speed of the applications and 3G. It's not to show off the features. The voice specifically repeats over and over how it's twice as fast, and that might be the case as EDGE is a true dog, but the speed aspect is extremely important to the ads message. Yet you're dismissing it entirely and acting as if the ad is about showing off features. This is the bullshit that Apple fans constantly spew. When someone shows Apple's bullshit they have people come to the rescue and defend them.

Again, with an ad specifically about speed showing misleading levels of performance it is a pretty big deal. It's Apple's modus operandi to be misleading about their products.

This is exactly how it is and why it's pretty fucked up.

To make my point more clear, when Jobs first demonstrated the iPhone 3G, they did a live 3G download of a high content webpage timed against EDGE and wifi. The wifi did the page in 17 seconds, 3G was 18 seconds, and EDGE was short of a minute. Those are absolutely realistic numbers. Had they, in a live presentation, faked exaggerated download speeds, that would be cause for uproar.

Are you getting this wound up over a frigging 30 second television ad? Really?

Keep arguing about how its just an advertisement but its showing what appears to be a "live" demonstration of the speed of the phone, all the while the announcer talking up how fast it is. You can't say that just because Steve Jobs did a live presentation at some event, that everyone should know how fast the phone actually is. What the fuck kind of logic is that?

This isn't some "Get in shape" infomercial or some dieting advertisement which are full of "Dramatization" notices and paid actors that was you to just take their word for it. It is a straight forward tech demo with no hints of having been doctored (such as those corny virus/adware cleaning commercials).

I smell the ban hammer.
Again, if it is funny constantly attacking a company that I have a large amount of money invested in, then Kyle and Steve they should get the joke when it is aimed back at them.

Frankly, I don't think the daily Apple bashing is appropriate (and tired, "ha ha, I am smarter than Mac users" - get a new riff, huh? 1990 called and wants it's joke back) on a tech site that wants to be taken seriously and doesn't want to be accused of bias, as Tom's Hardware has been, and I have told them so repeatedly.

If they can't take a joke in the same vein, let 'em ban me after 5+ years here. Not so funny when your finances are at stake, huh?

You joke was lame and unrelated. The only thing it had in common was the subject of advertising. Enjoy your ban.

apple pissed me off when they put AAPL in the stock's app. THEY ACTUALLY THINK I OWN THEIR STOCK?!

Have you seen the Apple VS PC ads lately? Apple ads lie about speed and performance VS the PC ALL THE TIME. It is easier to fool Apple zealots as their brains are so much smaller and their wallets are so much fatter.:):):)

Since when has Apple blatantly lied about the capabilities of their products?.

In their add that shows 3G going super fast, faster than you'd get on a damn wifi connection?

Yes, yes, there is a disclaimer, probably on the original add, in a 4point font on the screen for half a second. Doesn't change the fact that your iphone will never go as fast as that ad shows it going. And that is deceptive.

Apple Zealots are like Liberals. Totally lost in their own world, and incapable of intelligent, logical thought.

Apple = Overpriced and Over hyped. Period.

BTW, give me my HTC Kaiser any day of the week with my ability to send MMS's for crying out loud, and REAL connectivity with more than 3-4 hours of battery life. :D

QFT + $1B. FACT. Apple zealots can argue many points but this one is irrefutable.

If Macs were as good as they claim in the Apple ads then how come their market share is only 5% or less?:):):)

fixed that for ya.
liberals tend to be better informed and educated. now you have the greenpeace types, but then you have the rush limbaugh's on the other side.

I don't much care for the iPhone or any of the Macs, or Apple the company myself, but not all users of Apple products are idiots. However, people who believe what they see in commercials and adverts are. :D Unfortunately that covers a rather large portion of the human species, regardless of race, religion, sexual preference, geographic location, or computer and gadget choices. :(

You frequent a hardware enthusiast and overclocking site and you're surprised to see mac bashing? Apple isn't exactly known for allowing people to do what they want with their machines.
Considering the huge slander campaign currently being blasted across the earth by Apple against PC's, I'd think you could stomach a little mac bashing on this little 'ole website. Probably not going to hurt your precious stock very much.

My Touch opens cnn in less than 2 seconds and opens new links in less than 1...? Is the iPhone THAT much different??? Im on regular wifi btw.

Since when has Apple blatantly lied about the capabilities of their products?

Either way, as Alex said earlier, do you make a two minute commercial (all that stuff can be done in about a minute, btw), or do you condense the time of the events to show off its features? This is no more misleading than other ads that demonstrate product features. It is incredibly naive to think that this would happen that fast in reality considering that an average desktop with broadband access won't be that fast, let alone a cell phone browsing over wifi or 3G.

The reviews I've seen said that the increase in speed wasn't as significant as they expected and that it nearly as fast as speeds seen on EVDO networks.

This is likely a problem with AT&T, but since the phone is only available on that network, the commercial should be accurate. It's OK to compress time in a commercial, but when the ad is discussing the speed of the new phone, the ad should note that they're using compression and they probably should have a stopwatch showing the actual time it took.

You must have CNN cached in some manor, as it just took 12 seconds for me to low CNN for the first time. Also, we're talking about the 3G network from AT&T and not the WiFi connection.

FYI, more people with an MS or PhD are Democrats than Republicans.

If you mean via Broadband (not on a phone), I loaded the CCN site in roughly 8 seconds, and this is the first time I've been there on this build.

you guys are pulling up the full cnn site right? not the mobile version it defaults to?

*study based off of 137 people from Berkeley University :p

Seriously, polls told us Kerry was going to win by a landslide, rofl.

I wouldn't doubt if it was true though, colleges are one big lib institution where they breed and indoctrinate their own kind.

Changing networks for any phone is just dumb. Every network offers perfectly capable smartphones with enough features to satisfy any user. The iPhone has two draws: Excellent touch screen and it's Apple. If your service is unsatisfactory, that's a different story.

The reviews I've seen said that the increase in speed wasn't as significant as they expected and that it nearly as fast as speeds seen on EVDO networks.

Speeds can vary simply by driving two or three blocks. That's the problem with wireless internet. Also, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe speed wise it goes EVDO Rev A > AT&T 3G > EVDO Rev 0. So regardless of what the iPhone can or cannot do within itself, with the same amount of coverage a Dare will stomp it for pure wireless internet speed.

FYI, more people with an MS or PhD are Democrats than Republicans.

You've never worked at a college or university have you? Take all those people you have with PhDs down at least two notches because they typically have the active learning ability of a rock. It's amazing they even accomplish anything in their own field.

Professors with TWO PhDs that can't even lookup how to do a bullet list in MS Word help. These are people teaching younger people how to research THEIR subject, and they can't even use Windows/Office help or google shit! The secretaries where I work now that make 1/4th what the profs made learn faster.

Saying someone is intelligent because they have a piece of paper means nothing. It doesn't help your cause; it merely makes you appear superficial. I'm not saying you are, because I don't know you.

and also where people get a piece of paper that says you can do shit, otherwise you're doomed to flipping burgers the rest of your life. damn those liberal scum.... :p:rolleyes:

I very much consider this false advertisement. If they had a car commercial, touting the cars SPEED, and showed it zipping around a race track doing 200MPH, and it can only do 90MPH in reality? That is the definition of false advertisement. This commercial is talking about the SPEED of the Iphone, and SHOWS you it going VERY fast, yet in real life, it DOES NOT have the speed that is shown in the commercial. I dont know how more cut-n-dry it can get. The Mac fanboys sure can come up with some creative defenses though. They should all become politions, if they are not already. Great spin Dr's. Or lawyers. Two great occupations for Mac fanboys that truly uses there skills at doing little, look flashy doing it, and costing a mint doing it.

Funny stuff. I'm not surprised at all and of course it's false advertising. If they showed clear cuts in the video, you could go, "yeah, they cut out the loading parts"...but they made it seems like it was all done in one take, in real-time. Of course it's compltetely misleading.

Then again, this is coming from a company who advertised about their Intel CPUs by saying that for years it was stuck doing dull little tasks in a PC and now it can finally let loose on a Mac...where it wasn't able to run most games or fun applications. (This was before they could run Windows, too) But that's not misleading either though, right?

wow Serpico you really like the iPhone don't you?

What, you've missed my posts complaining about how janky the 2.0+ firmware has been compared to 1.4? I've got plenty of issues, but my problem is people taking this common ad practice seriously. You don't see me tearing down the absolutely ridiculous and intellectually dishonest Folger's style "Mojave" ads (and I like Vista).

The product and the ad are two different things, and I know well enough to ignore ads as exaggeration at best.

FYI, more people with an MS or PhD are Democrats than Republicans.

That and more affluent areas are generally Democrat while poorer sections generally go Republican. Some of you people out there will say that level of education and income level are mutually exclusive, but I call those people crazy.

Full disclosure: I'm a registered Libertarian, screw both parties. :)

Do this folks, if you really want to make a company fess up and deal with honesty. Go get any of these products:

^^^ McDonald's Big Mac, or...

^^^ Burger King Whopper (single), or perhaps...

single04ep6.jpg

*** Wendy's Classic Single... I could go on literally forever with the products (yes I focused on food but that's because I'm fungry right now dammit), but you should get the point:

Marketing = lying to your fucking face to get your cash. And it works, and it always work because people are really fucking stupid.

"George Carlin is dead... long live George Carlin..." :(

And for the record, I've never in my life ever seen a Big Mac, Whopper, or Classic Single that looks anything like any of those sandwiches, EVER... except of course on the advertising... I think everyone should walk into their favorite restaurants and order food, and when they don't give you what those pictures show, raise fucking hell until they feed you for free or throw you out.

VIVA LA REVOLUCION!!! TAKE BACK YOUR FAST FOOD, YOUR... well... you figure it out. You're the people buying that shit... ;)

the big mac looks realistic, just usually gets squashed when they wrap it. they arent exactly gentle.

Yep, it's bullshit as well. Maybe you should actually read some of the comments, or at least mine. I'm against every form of false advertising. Doesn't matter the company, doesn't matter the product. It should be illegal and shouldn't be allowed. Again you're one of those people who might not buy the bullshit but you let it happen. Why is that? If you're not going to buy it why not support them not doing it at all? It's really simple to me, bullshit is bullshit and it shouldn't be supported in any form. Doesn't matter if it's a Microsoft, Apple, Dell, McDonalds, Burger King, Wal-Mart, or any other company.

If that was a Mac advertisement, you would only get 1 meat patty in real life, and it would taste like shit. You would feel so bad for paying full price for half a burger, you blindly defend Mc Donnalds every time someone complains about it online.

The question in that case is are you just going to boycott everything or move on?

Because if the bullshit bothers you that much then its time to move into a cabin Ted Kaczynski style.
