AAPL has gone up over FORTY TIMES since I bought it at $16 (it split twice since then) and closed at $179 today (real price for me: $716) and the 52-week high is $203.

But I think attacking Apple users because you are a system builder is like a guy with a Ferrari talking shit at a guy with a Mercedes - a truly apples and oranges comparison (no pun intended), something this site supposedly doesn't do. You don't buy an Apple to take it apart, you buy it to be productive. And if you do graphics or video editing, they are great machines. And speaking of enthusiasts, you can also tinker with the operating system since it is BSD-based, a helluva lot more than you can with Windows. I'll be most of the "hard" guys here bashing Mac users wouldn't know where to start with BSD or Linux.

And truly hard, secure people don't need to disparage others to feel smart. And if any of you hardware geniuses here who think you are so superior want to do a forum search, you'll find some dual-cascade phase change cooling projects I've done to compare against your supra-hard hardware enthusiasm.

For the record, I haven't used a Mac for 15 years. I just own their stock - thankfully.

A friend of mine was the visual effects supervisor on 300. Almost everything from compositing to 3D work to even tasks like databases were done mainly in OS X. The rest, renderfarms and such, were Linux, with some Windows workstations taking up 3rd.

I've worked in the film industry for over 15 years now and can tell you that most of the stuff I see at post-production houses and out in the field are running either OS X or Linux. I can't think of a single offline editing suite I've been in that wasn't running on a Mac. This isn't to say that Windows isn't used either; in the cases I do see them it is as Maya workstations, but I'm just as likely to see that running on Linux or OS X. A lot of the work I see out there is still running on UNIX based operating systems, I'm guessing because the history with VFX software goes way back to when IRIX (the UNIX OS used with SGI machines) was in wide use, and of course Apple has a very long legacy of work in media. That and you don't really have to worry about the OS (my old Final Cut rig lasted me five years with zero maintenance or worry on my part and it ran as good as the day I got it).

Apple has performed well, but when you bought it, (I'm guessing around 1998), there was little reason to buy....they had a shrinking marketshare and, I think, Job's was back.

Now if I'd known everyone would like the iPod so much, I'd have bought, but I just didn't get it, given that it couldn't playback an album without gaps. What I learned was that most people don't really care about the quality of playback, so long as it plays. Apple has since fixed that huge gaffe (which is more than I can say for a lot of other DAP makers, including the Zune, AFAIK).

The post house I worked at for a while ran various Avid workstations on Windows XP and NT boxes. It seemed to work out fairly well for them, though the guy that really brought Avid into the fold there was, and still is, very much a PC guy. He didn't detest Macs or anything, but it was pretty clear he didn't like them all that much. I recall him playing around with the Mac Pro I put in the Final Cut bay and just abusing that gorgeous case

Naturally, all of the audio bays, and all of the other tenant companies in the building -- editors, audio sweeteners and composers -- were all Mac. Even the THX-certified screening room ran off long-in-the-tooth MDD G4s, and fantastically well, I might add.

At home, I'm a PC guy (though I use a Cinema Display and an Apple Keyboard on my rig). I'm a PC gamer, and I run Windows XP exclusively. At work, I would have no reason to use a PC, and would readily accept a slower Mac over a faster Windows PC. No question.

That may be the dumbest quote of all time. AAPL has had likely the best stock performance in the last 15 years and there was no reason to buy? I was begging my friends and family to buy it at $16, and the ones who didn't are all shaking their heads and wishing they had, since $25K is now worth a $1 million. Apple stock was woefully undervalued in the early 1990's when I bought it. Market share was low? Like Bentley and Rolls Royce and BMW and Mercedes, all of whom are profitable? Where are GM and Ford right now? Dell had a large market share (with low margins) and where has that stock gone lately? Market share? I'll take margins over market share, thanks.

I stand corrected, this is actually a dumber post than above. While, apparently, you have Carnac-like foresight to predict the market perfectly, most people do well in investments - good investments - by buying and holding long term, whether it's a good stock or real estate (and yes, people should buy and hold real estate right now). Yes, there are speed bumps, but you ride them out. Apple, Inc. is currently trading at FORTY TIMES what I paid for it. I guess that makes me an idiot and you a genius. But, silly me, I ride out good stocks, the ups and the downs, and I don't run to the door like lemmings do. And so far I have been right. And the majority of analysts list AAPL as a buy or outperform right now. I guess you are smarter than they are as well. You are oh, so smart, you must be making a killing in investments.

Seriously, I've met some of the guys on Xtremesytems who are breaking world records in benchmarks using home-brewed triple phase change and LN-cooled rigs, systems tweaked beyond imagination with various hardware mods that I doubt many posters here would even understand, let alone have the guts or ability to do. I've been in the garages of people who can build a cascade from scratch and mill their own evaporator heads (the phase change equivalent of a water block) with their own CNC machine. Some of them Intel actually put on stage for overclocking demos.

And you know what? They never disparage people for using Macs or being NooBs or what forums they post on. They are cool, helpful guys who know they are so "leet" that their work speaks for itself.

Only the insecure pretenders need to say, "you own a Mac, you are dumb."

But seriously, and just for the record: when AAPL hit $195 earlier this year I was screaming "SELL SELL SELL!!!" like the Mortimer Brothers in "Trading Places" when they realized they'd been screwed on that crop report.

I dumped the 12K shares I'd held since mid-1999, purchased at $12, soooo... nothing wrong with holding onto stocks for long periods of time. I've still got quite a few floating out there, but I bought a house in Vegas off the Apple stock.

So, genius, most definitely. I got out while the gettin' out was good.

I just won't put any Apple products in it.

with all your posts so far, dare i say they sound a little "elitest". just because some of us don't do the kinds of projects you do, doesn't mean we are any less of an enthusiast than you. if one mods anything and continues to do it over the years, learn everything they can, and enjoy doing those things just for fun, i'd call it being "hard". i take pride in tearing things apart and making them work better, just like you with your phase change stuff. i may not take it as far as you do, but it doesn't matter. though i would love to have a desktop again to tinker with. tearing apart an eeepc just isn't as fun.

the whole "merits" thing is hilarious though. "merits" usually boil down to mac, windows, and *nix fanboys screaming at each other. amirite?

It's actually a great keyboard, though it takes a bit of tweaking to get things just right on Windows (but PrintScrn is annoyingly non-functional). The feel is fantastic, it looks great and it's impressively weighty. Unfortunately not. I can use the NVIDIA control panel if I need to make some slight tweaks, but I'm actually satisfied with the default color and gamma.

I'd really have a hard time recommending a Cinema Display these days, though, if you're in the market. I bought mine when the price premium was negligible, but today, you're paying nearly twice as much with fewer features. Unless you're really hooked on the way it looks, I'd get something else.

The last one I tried was the Razer Lycosa. God what a terrible keyboard that was. After a few weeks I finally realized that the solution was the same keyboard that came with my iMac. That was my facepalm moment of 2008 right there.

Anyway, I'm super happy with it.

Ditto. Apple hasn't upgraded the panels in their displays for over two years now. They're good as far as S-IPS panels go but NEC has them beat with the H-IPS panels they've put out since in their superior (and more expensive) high end LCDs. Funny enough, the $1100 NEC 2490WUXi uses the same panel Apple is using in the 24" iMac, and I wouldn't mind if Apple used that in their 23" ACD as well (for one thing it would put that great panel in a monitor that is $200 cheaper). I have no idea what's holding their ACD upgrades up. Maybe they're waiting to move to LED backlighting in all of them, I dunno, but in that case they'll have to wait even longer for them to come down in price since LED backlit LCDs in the 24" and 30" sizes are very expensive right now.

You know, that's a really good question. I really like both keyboards so that's a tough one. I lean slightly towards the Apple keyboard simply because I like the scissor keys more at this point. IMO they are excellent for touch typing and gaming. If Logitech offered a G15 style keyboard (LCD and macro keys) with low profile scissor keys that aren't rubberized like on the Lycosa (ugh), that would be the ultimate for me.

As an Apple evangelist, I thought I'd put my credentials up with the people calling those in the Apple camp dumb (i.e., a response to those claiming to be elite). The point being, be careful who you call hard, and who you call soft.

Apple made to drop iPhone advert

An Apple iPhone advert has been banned by the advertising standards watchdog for exaggerating the phone's speed.

The advert boasted the new 3G model was "really fast" and showed it loading internet pages in under a second.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) upheld complaints by 17 people who said the TV advert had misled them as to its speed.

Apple UK said it was comparing the 3G model with its 2G predecessor and its claims were "relative not absolute".

The advert repeatedly stated that the phone was "really fast" and showed news pages and the Google maps service taking just fractions of a second to appear.

Text on the screen said: "Network performance will vary by location."

After upholding the viewers' complaints, the ASA said the advert must not appear again in the same form.

It said the advert was likely to lead viewers to believe that the device actually operated at or near to the speeds shown in the advert.

The watchdog concluded: "Because we understood that it did not, we concluded that the ad was likely to mislead."

Apple said its claims were "relative rather than absolute in nature" - implying the 3G iPhone was "really fast" in comparison to the previous generation - and therefore the advert was not misleading.

The company also said the average consumer would realise the phone's performance would vary - a point they said was made clear by the text stating "network performance will vary by location".
