Just saw this over at CVG about Devil May Cry4 being pirated to death..

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=194449

Cmon..WTF..The game cost ~$35..And I dont want to hear the usual piracy defense of draconian DRM or shitty port bullshit..This game was a solid conversion with some PC only additions..These guys deserve to be paid and I personally bought it on launch..I know pirates are generally frowned upon on this site and that needs to be driven harder if we expect companies to continue to support PC gaming as Capcom has...

Thoughts..

I played the demo- the game sucked balls.
They should go under...

bla bla bla
make good game = people buy
make crap game = people read reviews, might wanna try it out, download it, it's crap, don't buy.

I don't "pay" to try a game there's simply too many crap games out there I'd go broke in a minute and I wouldn't even enjoy it slightly.

There's a couple game I'll buy without trying but they're very rare and it's games I know will be good.

People and companies need to stop their god damn bitching and start producing quality instead of that shit they've been serving us for the past 5 or so years.

I agree 100%..

for me no question...

call of duty
rainbow six
ghost recon
unreal tournament..

any variation or versions I will always buy..
hell I paid $10 extra to have quake iii arena on time.....

I love the xbox 360 with the ability to download demo games... try it before you buy it... is sooo nice... would be nice if pc games went that way again... remember q3demo (I think it was called) was fun as hell and made me run out and buy it....

Let them pirate it. If its really a good game, itll sell regardless of whether the pirates do their thing or not. Sins of a Solar Empire is proof of this.

QFT +1

Make a game worth buying and I'll buy it :)

"Devil May Cry", lol, what a shitty wanky shit-wack of a game.

Since the dawn of consoles we've had to suffer shitty movie tie-in games, and yet here we are, 2008, and they're still being made.

What fucking idiots are buying this shit? Oh wait, they're not now; they're pirating it instead apparently. Good! Hope it kills off all these shitty games for good.

This is part of the reason that PC gamers hate consoles. Mediocre titles like this crap are a bi product of console players buying millions of utter shite titles @ $60 a pop for years now.

Tip... stick to making console games, because most pc gamers won't have that crap you call a game.

Are you guys thinking of the same game because DMC 4 looked beautiful and was fun for me. This crap excuse is getting old already, pirates always come up with some stupid excuse to justify their behavior. The OP was right, they put in a lot of effort to get the pc version of this game to run flawlessly and if you like the series at all then you would like dmc 4.

Saying a game is shit just because YOU dont like the series is dumb. I dont like Mario series games for instance, should i say well the game is shit I will go pirate it. Doesnt make sense does it, if a game is crappy then why pirate it at all ? I dont know why I even bother with this, I have preached to pirates for as long as I been pc gaming and it's still basically comes to this simple reason they pirate no matter what stupid reason they try to justify theirselves with... Free > not free.

I have said it before and I will say it again that one day all we will have is console ports with the exception of the kiddy arcade crap games and blizzard games and valve. When that happens pat yourselves on the back because you're to blame. I stated this before Cod4 when the game launched had a 20:1 pirate copy to legal copy that they were tracking online. Do you know how heartbreaking that is for a developer to see those numbers ? and dont say cod4 was crappy and deserved to be pirated. I mention that game to disprove your claim that bad game=dont sale good game=sale. It's simply not true. You know what else sucks, as much as I hate the RIAA and what they are doing with suing college students for pirating as such, I am starting to wish pc gaming had a similar organization to track pirates and throw their butt in prison where they belong.

Devil May Cry4, I bought that game for PC....what a mistake, that was the biggest piece of crap. I gave it to my neighbor

Piracy is preventable if companies stop bitching and do something. I don't know anyone with an illegal copy of Half Liife 2.

Thats because HL2 is worth every penny and people know that. Make a good game with great replay value and people will buy them without a problem.

Guess not seeing as how Valve has one of the best anti pirate systems out there via steam. I wish all games had that. It would be a step in the right direction.

wow...
You're wrong on so many level about pirates (game not the arrr one).

Most of the game people download end up in the recycle bin not long after it's been downloaded and many many of them will end up paying for the full game, saying otherwise is complete bull.

I don't keep numbers but game I've downloaded AND finished are so rare I can't even remember if it actually happended.
Games I've d/l and deleted after the first 5 minutes .... oh boy.
Games I've d/l and bought not long after, alot, not as many as I've deleted but still alot.

Basicly, most people do it to "test drive" the game at it's full potential, where you really see if you like or not the game...

So saying pirates are costing sales makes me puke... hey does blizzard complains about Piracy?!?
NO

I'll let you figure out why that is by yourself.

Played the demo, didn't like it, controls were way too weird even with a controller, uninstalled it, end of story. Games like HL2, TF2, BF series, those I buy. Tons of replay value and great gameplay. Racing games I buy. RPGs I buy. I'm all for devs porting games to PC, but a lot of these console ports suck in the control dept.

This game in particular was insanely hard to remap the controls to a non-X360 control scheme for a different game pad, and it was just frustrating.

Here's something you have to figure out, you can't back up any of your claims. so you just wasted your time with that post.

And I'm not going to rebutt with some empty claims that most pirate DON'T buy the game, because then I would be as ignorant as you are.

What I am going to say is that it is against the human nature of someone who doesn't have a money tree to go out and buy a game when he has already pirated it and has 100% of the game already.

a game like dmc is perfect pirating material. no MP component, fun for one run through, and then delete it. This is why these games are going to stay far away from the PC platform as time progresses

Pirates blame consoles for their criminal behaviour, gg!

Thats because HL2 is worth every penny and people know that. Make a good game with great replay value and people will buy them without a problem.

No..that's not why. HL2 wasn't available to be pirated for a while after it appeared on steam. The fact that you could pre-load it made thousands of people purchase it beforehand since it had so much hype, people couldn't help it. That and the fact that it came with CS:S, and the promise of other MP games and mods were also part of the reason it sold so well. The SP was great in itself, but if the game had been released outside of steam as ONLY a SP game like DMC, it would have been pirated to hell.

if someone doesn't have money they aren't going to buy the game ever. So if they pirate the game the company truly isn't losing any money due to the fact they aren't losing a customer becuase he could never and would never buy the game. And many people with money only buy games they like and if they don't like the game they wont buy it but they would download it for free. It doesn't have nearly as big of an impact and most people are lead to believe, and even if it did there is a known way that stops almost all pirating and companies are making the choice not to utilize it.

These people don't buy the game because they don't have to. If they lived in a world where they couldn't pirate the game, they might find a way to raise enough money to be able to play the game, because its human nature to be entertained at all costs. So it's false to say they wouldn't buy the game ever, because they might under different circumstances.

How many kids who play WOW would pirate WOW for free if they could? these same people would say, I wouldn't buy it anyway because I don't have the money. yet they find a way because its addictive as hell. this is human nature.

Wow, lots of DMC hate here. DMC4 is excellent, I've completed almost every game mode. LDK mode was utterly insane, and I plan on replaying it - maybe multiple times.

The story/voice acting in DMC4 is typical Capcom cheese for the series, but the combat is great - some of the best action gaming ever IMO, particularly the boss fights.

You guys are going overboard with the hate on DMC4, its an excellent action game, definitely the best available on consoles or PC. The problem with the sales is well, it really is a genre not many PC gamers care about. Not to mention a gamepad is pretty much required to enjoy the game. Plus, Capcom did a horrible job marketing the game, I mean, you can barley even find this in retail stores. They should have put the game on Steam like they did with Lost Planet and DMC3 PC.

Unfortunately, as I would love to believe that people are honest, many are not.

A lot of people truly believe that computer software should be free and they are entitled to it. It is very much the same with music. I have a nephew who is in his late teens, and he and his friends have grown up getting stuff for free, so they think it's the way to go. This is very sad to me, because as an amateur musician, I know how much work goes into creating a product. I can only imagine the huge effort that goes into creating a software product.

I am not just blaming young people, as I have a friend in his forties who pirates PC games. Although I am completely against it, he rationalizes his actions.

Lots of people pirate..... just because they can. They aren't going to make the distinction of a good game vs a bad.... they just think it should be free. When it comes down to it, it is nothing but thievery. :(. Just my two cents.

also there is another side that people havent hit on..

a example is more of console side but hurts the companies worse.. pc or console it is still the gaming company..

I used to buy new xbox, xbox 360 games... but now I only buy used.. why.. because I get it cheaper (usually $5 cheaper) and 10% off... as gamestop does the deal where you can buy anything used for 10% off...

then ta boot they do the buy 2 get 1 free used games, console accessories, etc....

so gamestop is making good money..

just one game could be bought and sold 5 times in its lifetime and the gaming company only made money off the first sale.....

what about teh sims? thats a SP only game yet that sells just has much has WOW

And I'll explain why.

Sims caters to a specific crowd of people, these types of people don't know how to download firefox, let alone pirate a game, very low computer knowledge. And actually mainly women, or their significant others buy the game for them.

Now DMC4, Crysis etc.. the people who are into these games are more tech savvy, thus piracy is more of an issue.

It's a shame that Capcom Japan wouldn't consider or allow the sale the game via Steam. DMC4 for the PC is one of the best ports I've seen in a while. Personally, I like the game a lot.

I've met too many people that have money to buy games, music and movies and refuse to do so because they feel the prices should be lower and just download or get a copy from friends (very retarted logic IMO). Regardless of whether the content is good or bad, some people will not pay for it and I would guess that the number of offenders is rather large. Some of these people will complain about PC component and software prices but will turn around and buy a PS3 and XBOX360, then purchase games at $55+ a piece. I think it boils down to this, if they think they can get away with not paying for something, they will continue to not pay for it, until you put them in a position where they must cough up the dough for it.

However, I think the real problem with DMC4 is that it doesn't appeal to large enough segment of the PC gaming community. I didn't see numbers in the article so I'm left wondering if the sales weren't as high as expected meaning they didn't break even or if they are profiting but just not as much as they projected.

Well, those of you who downloaded your copy and have played through 2 or more levels and are continuing to play should have figured out by now that the game is a solid port. Buy the game already.

I want to see ports done with this level of quality at the very least going forward but it's not going to happen if people with the means to buy the games continue to pirate(I hate that term). There won't be much incentive to put the extra effort into it or even bother at all.

Absolute Bullshit!!!..If they dont have money to buy the game, how the fuck do they have a rig to play it on and an internet connection to pirate it??

Thats the most ridiculous thing I've heard in a LONG time

Anyone who pirated DMC4 should be ashamed; it's not worth the bandwidth. :D

Pirates blame consoles for their criminal behaviour, gg!

I have never pirated any game so I am not a pirate, I am simply stating the fact that because of these mediocre titles don't sell millions on the pc isn't because of piracy.

It is because they suck, and most pc gamers aren't stupid. Most won't waste their money on crap titles. Console players seem to be more tolerant.

then refute it with logic..if you're capable.

How about you prove your point that the only people that play the sims games are computer illiterate women.....if you're capable

when it was released in September 2004 it sold a record breaking 1 million copies in 10 days and was the number one selling game of 2004 (even tho it was released at the END of 2004), beating Doom 3, World of Warcraft and HL2. Thats a lot of computer illiterate women.

The Sims does have a larger than typical female audience, but it also has a large tech savvy audience who likes to make things, especially modelers and skinners. The tech savvy audience for the Sims games is far larger than for any console port. Just look and see how many Sims mods there are, and tell me how does it compare to the number of mods for the Devil May Cry series.

Just look at the recent Creature Creator for Spore, and see how many people are making stuff. The number of creatures made in such a short time is astounding. It's a Sim type game, and shares much of the same audience.

it's obvious you're an anti-console PC gamer that can't see any good in any console game. Your opinion is thus invalid, maybe some day you'll wake up. till then, eat some bacon.

What you forgot to mention is the amount of actual modders for Sims pales in comparison to the amount of people actually playing the game.

Again a large percentage of the Sims audience are females over the age of 30+ that just want to have some fun with an alternate life.

I don't know why you mention spore. The only thing you CAN do right now is create content, so of course 100% of the spore gaming populace are modders :p

Because the number of people buying the Creature Creator is greater than the number of people buying DMC4. There are more modders for Spore than there are players for DMC4 on the PC.
