AMD has just posted a brand new list of processor prices for those of you interested (which should be everyone). There are cuts across the board, hit the link for the complete list. I grabbed screenshots of the Phenom X4, X3 and Athlon X2 prices for your convenience:

Hmmm price drops before earnings. I've seen this before and it doesn't paint a pretty picture for AMD in 2 weeks. :p

They are loosing their asses on the desktop segment. Educated consumers are buying up Intel processors and AMD is really only making any money on the OEM off-the-shelf systems non educated consumers purchase.

No matter how much of an AMD fan you are, you are probably buying Intel right now.. Not good.

I consider myself an educated consumer. I buy AMD because they are CHEAP, not because they perform 15% slower at the same clock rate.

Show me where I can buy a 2.3 ghz C2D for $62
Newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115030

That 2.3 C2D is 300% more expensive than a 2.5 ghz Athlon X2 that will perform almost as good.

That is the sign of an educated consumer.

Umm, I believe I'm an educated customer and I also buy AMD. Great performance for a lower price.

Is the 9950 out or is it going to be released in the future?

The official prices are a hoot. AMD has desktop ASPs in the low $50-range (vast majority of sales go to OEMs at clearly very large discounts... some could point out obviously below cost). A trip to your favorite online store shows the prices of many on the list already selling for (much) less over the past few weeks.

At least the official X3 prices (2 out of 3) have eroded to almost reasonable levels. Too bad they cost as much to make as X4 models.

Price cuts huh? Newegg just jacked the prices of most of their X2's (>= X2 5000 or so) $10-30 over last week or so, from what I have noticed.

If they want any ethusiasts back they need to put those BE phenoms X4 at price point of Q6600 at max.

hmm i wonder what if i should upgrade from my 2.6ghz amd 64+ single core on my server rig

+1 the phenoms are still overpriced for what they are. the last gen processors are good but that is all, they need the 45nm in the worst way.

9950? Never heard. Wonder why they don't list the 9850 Black Edition. I've actually never seen a 9850 regular before.

I think I may pick myself up an AMD and build a cheap rig for work... with the current memory, hard drive, and processor prices... not to mention the ATI price point on video cards... you could make a cheap killer rig.... great for those office lanparties... lol

I wish we had office lan parties, apparentely I'm the only one if my office that even realizes PCs can play games.

The quad core prices are still far too high for the performance. The lower end CPUs on the other hand are a much better value then low end Intels when considering the whole platform. Although for AMD, I can't see them making all that much money on a $40 CPU.

With the Q6600 already selling regularly for $180-200, there is just no value at all in any of the current AMD quads or tris.

AMD quads have to get to the 150$ range to justify themselves.
A cheap P35 mobo + Q6600 blow any Phenom away in terms of Value - that's a plaform I can use and UPGRADE if need be ( to a Q9770 when they'll be EOL).
Sucks to be AMD in the CPU market right now... damn I miss AMD64 days.

+1 though actually I just got a 9600 black edition with 2gb memory for 100 dollars. If AMD wants to move their stock they are going to do this more often. 230 dollars to gut my system to go quad core I would do with amd, but at their normal asking price that would have been around 400 to 500. I could easily build an intel system for that that would be far faster.

I jumped on that deal too, which is why I decided to qualify my statement with "current quads".

At $100 the AMD quads start to look tasty, but of course AMD would be losing a ton of money if the new procs were sold at this point. I'm sure they know the prices they are asking for the 9x50s are unreasonable, but they probably can't come any lower. Intel is producing the Q6600s so cheap, AMD can't touch the price/performance. Until AMD finds a way to make the Phenoms either faster or much cheaper, they are completely non competitive at the high end.

Personally, I'll buy whatever chip is the better value. Right now at $100 and under its probably AMD, for anything higher there is no quesiton about buying an Intel.

A 9600BE for $100 is a world of hurt for AMD. There's no way they would survive selling it at that price.

Why are their quads so slow?? Doesn't help that the Phenoms aren't great overclockers. I'm just wondering. Intels quads are highly overclockable. Theres no comparison as far as the quads goe. Don't get me wrong I have a AM2 5000+ thats high overclocked but when I have enough money to upgrade/put together a new rig I won't think twice about going with Intel.

Wow, that they're whole product line up is so cheap from top to bottom. Thats going to kill their ASP / revenues!

But not very interesting from a consumer (buying) standpoint.

Unless the the 5600+ - 6400+'s were hitting near 4Ghz, then it would be mildly interesting. They'd still be slower, but at least comparable to something like an e7200.

But if you're looking for cheap, you could still get an e2xx0 and still beat AMD on price & performance.

MAYBE Intel will lower a few of its prices b/c of this, but I don't see much reason to. :(

I just bought a X2 4600+ for $60 for a super low budget build for my mother in law. I don't care if a C2D is faster, I am not looking for anything fancy and super cheap.

at this point its in for dumping their inventory. you can't OEM unlocked CPUs and the enthusiast aren't touching them because even the unlocked versions only go to about 3gh. at best they match a mildly overclocked Q6600. As it is a total loss here they should just cut there losses and be done with it.

That is the sign of an educated consumer.

Its the sign of someone building a computer while on a budget, nothing more. Its also a possible sign of a troll, but its too early to tell.

The sign of an educated consumer: someone who is able to make a purchase, based off of previous BS sorting and research, that meets their needs. An uneducated consumer, is one who over-generalizes everything, and fails to consider which product might work for a given situation.

I don't know what the prices are like in the US, but the people with fat rigs buy AMD here because it's way better bang for the buck.

Then there's also this thing of not supporting them because of their shady business practices.

Man thats some nice prices.

I agree. Money is kinda tight for me but I'm in need of swapping out my old motherboard and CPU.

The Athlon X2 Dual Core 5200+ 2.7GHZ @ 65w and 2MB cache for $75 is nice but I also like the Phenom 9550 2.2GHZ @ 95w with 2MB L2 cache and 3 MB L3 cache for $175.

I've only got $400 to spend :( and I need a new MB and a pair of 2gig sticks

Hmmmm...

well you missed out on the really good deal as the 9600 black is 170 right now with the combos you can do pretty well

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...ubCategory=343&SortField=0&PageSize=10&page=1

but again where you save money is getting a good mobo and the ram deal. the 175 is too much as well. at that price your better going with a Q6600.

e2160 for $65 ($5 more) or e2180 for $10 more.

So you could have gotten an e2180 for $70, that would OC to 3+++Ghz that would have been much faster.

e7200 ===== $130
asus P5K-E = $150 (overkill pricewise, but I like Asus)
4Gb ddr2 1066 = $90 (G.skill)
---------------------------
Total = $370.00

nice but for the extra the asus cost I think he could use a Q6600. and go quad. would put him in the 400 range.

I want to say Intel has better chipsets, but.....

I see this as a good thing.

I am an AMD person, but I have been with Intel since October of last year, when I dumped my Opteron 170/Abit for a E4400/Gigabyte G33-DSR2. Now that ATi back in the game (woohoo!), I've been dieing to try out the spider Platform it looks to be a killer. :D

I just tested an E8400 the past week and I ordered a Q9450 tonight.

As soon as AMD released their 790GX boards, I may pick up a Phenom. The clocks people are getting on them are pretty nice, and a 3.2ghz guaranteed overclock with the SB750 chipset is making AMD look more and more tempting but their heat output and power usage aren't quite there yet.

I'm gonna try and hold off until they release their 45nm's. The ETA on the 790GX board, I'm waiting on (DFI mATX) is September, so I'm hoping by that time the 45nm's will be out and I'll be a happy camper.
