Motherboard: Gigabyte 775 Ds3l - cant remember full name.
Memory: 4gb ddr 800
Videocard: 9800GTX
Powersupply: Antec 480w truepower II, with 18A on 2 12v rails
2 hard drives
1 dvdrw

any recommendations?

you don't need to spend that much.Considering you can't go SLI and unless you've got Raid10 raptor plans or something, I don't think you need anything more then a 500W. You can get away with a 400W just fine too.

My Recomendations:

Corsair 450W, very clean power, and the price reflects that
Silverstone 400W, stays withen spec but nothing ground breaking, cheapest here
FSP bluestorm 400 or 450W. Pricing is somewhat erratic on these guys. Be sure to get the ones with active PFC. If you can find one for under $60 its worth consideration.
 
Well, i dunnot about that. I have a 480watt Antec with 18A on both 12v lines.

But im having trouble powering my system. I dont know what is causing it, if its my 9800GTX or if its the powersupply not suppllying enough power. I just got it going by disconnecting a hard drive and using a PCIE "splitter" instead of the native PCIE cable. So im aiming high on the powersupply.
 
A good rule of thumb is to buy for your next upgrade instead of having to purchase another for the next build.
 
yah, not sure what the requirements for your 9800GTX are, but my Radeon X1900XTX calls for at least 25A on the +12v rails, and that's before Mobo/CPU ...

That can't be right. That means that the X1900XTX would use up to 300W of power by ITSELF. That 25A rating is for the entire system, not just the video card.

I feel ya, but how can they warn us end-users how much draw the video card will be based on they-dont-know-what-CPU-MoBo-RAM we're gonna use? And I know, too, that that is the recommended minimum, and more is better.

It's not right -- the 25A is above expected maximum draw with a typical system and the card installed. It is not for the card alone. If it were we would've all been running 800+ watt PSUs with tons of power on the 12v rails for years now... but we haven't. It's a fairly recent development.
 
OP -- there's a deal for a Corsair TX750 at Provantage.com for $70 AR ($105, $35 MIR). Probably the best deal you're going to see for a while if you don't have a new PSU already.
