For me it totally depends on price....since I have my quad as a workstation, and a dual in my fileserver, the only real in between i could see is maybe an HTPC of sorts. now, I've been looking at building one of them, but if the price on the Tris isn't right, I could likely go with a better dual or another quad, rather than a tri

Since my HD-DVD is now going to be worthless for HD movies I'm looking at a HTPC with a BD drive. (I can justify this to the wiffy) A Tri Core looks like it might be a good way to go.
A 2.2Ghz Phenom is $199. If a Tri Core is $150-ish I could see it doing quite well for a PPD/cost.
My thoughts, am I wrong?

Yes, it appears to be a salvage marketing scenario, but even so, I can't really blame AMD for proceeding with this decision. Any profit that can be produced from the Barcelona architecture is better than none. There have been many informative threads on the AMD forum about the tri-cores since last fall.Weren't there initial reports a while back saying that tri-cores were only coming to existence due to yield issues with quad cores over at the green team's camp?
AFAIK, there will be no Intel tri-cores but there will be a strange hex-core variant of Nehalem called Dunnington: http://forums.vr-zone.com/showthread.php?t=196356Nope... and form what I have read, they have no plans of doing so.. but you never know.
Totally agreed.There's always the PS3 with Blue-Ray and Folding@Home...![]()

Won't touch it out of principal. I hate Sony![]()

Based on how the SMP client doesnt fully utilize 4 cores, how do you think it would utilize 3 cores.. Might be just the thing to eliminate vmware overheads of a quad...
