I have around $1200 to spend on a desktop computer and need suggestions on this build below. Can anyone give me suggestions on this build or tell me of better ideas? I would use this rig for gaming, surfing, etc. Also, I have been repairing pcs for a few years now, but this will be my first system build, so a little compatibility info might be nice even though I double checked everything myself. Now with the video card below, will I have to get windows vista since it is directx 10? Is vista ok? Thanks. ;)

Which motherboard is the best is all on you. It comes down to what features you want and need.

Just to help you out though: If you don't need RAID, more than 4 SATA ports or legacy ports, then the DS3L is a good choice. If you want 8 SATA ports, RAID, and legacy ports and high overclocks, than the DS3R is a good choice.

Drop the RAM. 4GB of DDR2 800 RAM for $120 is not a good buy since you can get DDR2 1000 RAM for $5 less and in 2x2GB format which will helps decrease the chances of a poor overclock.
G.SKILL F2-8000CL5D-4GBPQ 2 x 2GB DDR2 1000 RAM - $115

You can get that Corsair PSU for cheaper here:
Corsair 620HX 620W PSU - $145

Also drop the 8800GTS 320MB. You can get the 8800GT 512MB, which is significantly faster, for that same price now if you act quick:
EVGA GeForce 8800GT 512MB PCI-E Video Card - $220

No, you do not need Vista just because the video card is DX10. But you will need Vista if you want DX10 features. However, at this point in time, DX10 isn't desired or needed much. Vista is OK as long as you make sure that you choose mostly new parts and don't have much old peripherals around. Also since you're going with 4GB of RAM, you will need a 64bit OS since only 64bit OSes can see and use 4GB of RAM. I recommend going with Vista Home Premium 64bit since it's pretty well supported now.

But that gpu you recommended is pci express 2.0 and the motherboard you recommended only has a pci express x16 slot. Would this still work?

Yes.

PCI-E 2.0 isn't some new and different format or anything. It's just a new revision of the PCI-E slot. PCI-E 2.0 is backwards compatible with PCI-E 1.1 slots. PCI-E x16 just means the speed of the slot.

Anyway, yes it will work.

I agree with Danny 100000%
jerichoblake...that’s a super smart build
E8400 + good P35 board + only the G.SKILL 2x2GB 1000Mhz as I said before is the smartest build now

just drop the Armor
