LG L246W

all right, after diligence I've found a place that stocks the older 245.

Can anyone summarize what I'll be missing in this one over the 246? (especially if the 245 has hdcp?)

also, any reason to be *overly* alarmed with ordering from here:

ty :)
your post gave me the idea to chk the BBs for this
I would have preferred a sealed box but finally caved due to the price and the "free" HDMI>DVI cable. Plus the fact that I could always return it to the store in 14 days.
I will grab the 4 yr warranty this week-even though this one is "perfect" you never know ;)
I tried to use 12% rewards card member coupon but it wouldn't take so I figured WTH -it was cheap enough for me!

Ginfest: Either way you made out just fine. Sometimes buying a Display or open-box is fine because you can see if there are any stuck/burnt pixels. Where are you buying a 4 year warranty from? Would have been nice if our coupons worked, but @ the price we paid we can't have it all!

The next 24" LG will be a TN, so we lucked out!

Good Luck!

Alex

Can anyone help me out with the LG L246. What's happening is when I boot up, the screen doesn't show me my BIOS etc. It goes directly to my Windows XP starting screen. I'm having a computer built for as I write this & I'm having them set up a dual boot operating system (Windows Vista 64 & WinXP Home) Will I be able to get @ my boot screen?

Is there anyway to fix this somehow? BTW....I'm using the DVI/HDMI input. I would really appreciate any insight!

Oh...As I recall it's always says something like "Power Saving Mode" when it boots up.

Thanks All.

FYI - The Ann Arbor, MI BB has two of these; the floor model and an open box, as of 10:30am est. today.

The guy told me they would take 10% off the regular price for the floor model, which was $599 (~$539 + tax). I didn't see any obvious scratches or flaws, but I didn't study it too intently.

The open box was marked at $529 (and was, incidentally, in a box).

So... there you go. Have a good day!

UMASS:

I am going to buy the BB warranty, it is normally $75.00 on the regular price but works out to approx $50.00 on the sale price. I hear if it dies at any time in the 4 years you get a gift card for the full price paid? Anyway, cheap ins JIC :)
On the no-BIOS screen that you mentioned, I get the "HDMI.." and "Power Saving" messages but then I see the BIOS boot up screens and have plenty of time to hit "DEL" or "F8" or my RAID utility. I'm not sure why yours doesn't sry :(
So far so good, this monitor is the balls, folks stop by and just drool over the size and colors!

That sounded almost too good to be true so I called BB to see if that was the case. I was told they will send it out and have it fixed or replace it, but they will usually fix it. The guy I spoke with (at the Yorba Linda, CA store) said he never heard of anyone getting GC's for the full price of the monitor.
I also called the Fullerton, CA store. They told me the extended warranty covers dead pixels and if the monitor ever breaks they will fix it. If they can't fix it they will replace it with a monitor that has the same specs (since it is discontinued). Kind of a bummer, I was thinking about getting that warranty.

Anywho, just thought I'd share what I was told. Where did you hear about the GC's? Maybe the people I spoke with are misinformed.

Is it really only $50 for the warranty? How long does it cover for? 4 years? Hell, that might be worth it even with a chance at maybe getting a similar priced *newer* model free in the future if it craps out. Hey, I can dream. But is it really only $50?

I'm also having the same issue. I did a search, but it doesn't seem that this power saving issue has been resolved. Anyone have a clue?

Yes...Please if anyone with an LG L246WP could give us some insight as for losing the boot-up info. it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

After following this thread I decided to go for the L246WP they still had left at my local BB.

I'm really impressed with the image quality. However while testing for dead/stuck pixels, I have found five very small, and very faint white spots (subpixels?) when looking against a black background. They appear only against black, all other colors are perfect. The spots are so small and so dim that they are only noticeable if you are specifically looking for them on a complete black background. During normal use they are not visible.

Should I...

A. Return it for a refund (they don't have any more L246s for exchange)
B. Call LG and ask for a replacement/fix?
C. Live with it. (getting a replacement might introduce other problems)

Other than that the monitor is great and I have had no buzzing or other issues mentioned.

Its an April 2007 with firmware v1.440.

Thanks.

Sorry for any misinfo :(
I checked the info with my son who had told me about his friend getting a GC "replacement"
If they can't fix or replace they offer the GC-at least that is what his friend told him he got?
Anyway, I'm happy with the monitor and the insurance will give me some piece of mind
So far this thing is great :)

I didn't even bother with dead pixel software because if you can't see it, then it's fine. I was going to, but then I thought, why bother knowing "if" there might be a dead sub-pixel. You'll drive yourself crazy. I just recently went thru 3 50" plasma TV's (2 Hitachi's & 1 Samsung) with dead/stuck pixels & they all went back, Finally decided on a Pioneer (PDP-5080HD) & got a perfect panel. When it comes to a $2,000+ investment, I want it perfect! Also....The BB inventory is almost gone, why get a refurbished panel from LG & be without for a decent amount of time? I would live with it myself. Just my two cents worth.

Just an idea, have you looked at what setting you are using for the HDMI connection, PC or Video?

The display takes a couple seconds to sync up/initialize/whatever it does. Your computer is just moving past the boot up screen before the monitor syncs up and starts displaying. It takes awhile to change resolutions or switch inputs as well. It does this for me on all the inputs, with either HDMI mode - it's just how the firmware works.

Just a heads up to anyone considering this monitor or is considering swapping the monitor for small problems.

THEY WILL NOT GIVE YOU AN L246WP monitor back if you do a SWAP Warranty exchange! I just did a swap and they gave me an L246WH-BN. It is a TN PANEL  . What pisses me off is when they approved the return they did not tell me that it would be a different monitor. I called them up and they tell me they have no more, so they decided to swap with an "equivalent" model. So what happens if a backlight fails in a year or so? They'll give you a TN model back.

To add insult to injury, the stupid monitor doesn't Pivot anymore either...

Right now I've fired off an e-mail and called them up. They will contact me again to see what they can do...

NO MORE LG MONITORS FOR ME... If you can return it, DO IT. Do not take any chances. I'm in Canada, so I don't know if that will make a difference.

BTW. There is a BIG DIFFERENCE between TN and MVA once you go to 24". The edges have different colors from the center (assuming you're looking dead center). Whoever decided that a TN panel would be acceptable for a 24" monitor (widescreen), should be dragged out and shot... multiple times...

When you say setting, where should I look @ my LG monitor or within my graphic card? Or with the operating system?

Thanks!

Well....I hope when I get my new computer with Dual-Boot (Vista 64 & XP) it will give enough time to "select" which operating system I want to use!

I still have an older Sony 19" monitor (that's kicks ass!) that never gave me this issue (DVI-DVI)

What's strange is some people say they don't have this issue with the LG L246BW!

Will I be ok? Computer is coming next week!

Wow. Such misinformation. I received a replacement model for my buzzing 246WP, and guess what? I got another 246WP! I'm sorry you had a bad experience with LG, but some (most?) of us didn't.

You can set the timeout on the menu to something long enough that you can select it.

System Properties -> Advanced -> Startup and Recovery -> Settings

Yeah, well.. this is my experience in Canada. And the rep told me that they're discontinuing the model. So good luck with your panel. I hope nothing goes wrong with yours.

Its not Misinformation if its true - is sounds to me that you're implying that I'm lying or overreacting.

So here are the facts: 1) They are discontinuing the model and 2) They don't carry any inventory. So once the L246WP's are all gone, you're gonna get what's available.
How is this "misinformation"? The rep told me all this over the phone as well as explaining that they'll give out replacements with what they consider to be "equivalent".

I just did the swap 2 days ago - when did you do yours? If you did yours recently, I'm gonna call them up again and ask them to ship one up from the States. Up here in Canada, its next to impossible to find a WP model. When I checked the US LG site, they don't even have the WH model, which is a good sign and might explain why you didn't have any problems.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience with LG, but some (most?) of us didn't.
The whole purpose of my post was to warn ppl that if you have any SMALL problems with the monitor - just put up with it. Don't swap it, since you may get a different model in return. I also wanted to warn everybody that although LG's SWAP warranty sounds good on paper - you're at their mercy if they don't have any identical replacements to give you. Compare this with Dell, where ppl are still able to get 2407WFP (Non HC models). Even though they should have lots more of the HC's. How old is the L246WP model anyways? 1-2 years old? I consider it a bad sign, if they can't give me a replacement for such a relatively new model...

EDIT: Part of the reason why I'm so upset with LG right now, is because when they approved the RMA - they DID NOT TELL ME ANY OF THIS. I only found out when I was at the Purlolator Shipping center and I HAD TO SIGN FOR THE PACKAGE and HAND OVER MY (Slightly) DEFECTIVE monitor to them. It was only until I returned home that I found out that the Panel was TN. If they had told me when they approved the RMA, that they would be giving me a WH model, I would have found out BEFOREHAND that it was a TN and I would NOT HAVE GIVEN THEM my MVA monitor.

Rogue: You're the man! That did it! I set it to 60 seconds vs. 30 & it shows my Asus MB (current MB being replaced) signature & my HD's etc.

Thanks for bailing me out! Much, much appreciated!

i just bough LG L245WP-BN (serial starts with 707..., build date: July, 2007). Right now I am @ "User" - Brightness - 60, Contrast - 80, RGB @100 for all and picture looks amazing. Great step from ViewSonic VX2235wm (TN panel) :)

However I am not able to use forte manager 2.8?!

Install goes fine; then it loads at start up, however I am not able to access either "Picture", "Color", "Options", since they seem to be locked. I can only access "Support" ? How can I unlock it?

do you know why are those options locked? maybe some disabled winxp service is @fault?!

see the screen:

Ksoze: I'm sorry that happened to you. But, that's the way of the world now. Cheap, cheap! You got a rawl deal no question! I knew (now it's confirmed) that LG was going to a 24" TN panel for this year.

Most everything now is price. It's a shame, but that's the way it is sadly. BTW...What was wrong with your L246BW in the 1st place?

I bought an open box model - it was the last one the store had. It had an annoying shadow that only appeared on dark gray backgrounds. I took it back to the store and they advised me to contact LG to get a replacement since they were under the impression that I would get one faster than they could.

I really liked the monitor which was perfect for me, except for that shadow.

I shouldn't have listened to them (Future Shop) and just returned the monitor and bought it somewhere else.

The weird thing is that if you look on the LG Canadian site, the WP model has the word NEW stamped on the picture. Whereas the WH model doesn't have it. So now I'm confused, since shouldn't they have more inventory of he newer model than the old? The US site doesn't even have the WH model listed...

NOT TRUE!! You should return the item to LG and request a refund of your purchase price.
A TN panel is inferior, and not what you purchased. Try to contact someone above the customer service level as they can probably be more flexible with *policy*.

I am an actuary. I have done pricing of warranties in the past and have also reviewed many reserve calculations (basically guessing how many more claims will come in after the end of the year that occurred in the previous year). I can tell you this - the loss ratio on these is around 50%. That means for every dollar they collect from people by selling these policies they only pay out 50 cents in claims. Think about the profit in that!!! The admin cost for these can't be very high. No wonder the sales people push these - the stores make much more money on these than selling the merchandise. That is a huge markup!!! The warranties are generally never exactly as you would hope. there is always language in them that protects the seller. My opinion is to only buy a warranty when the cost of the item is beyond a point where you would be comfortable replacing at your own cost after the provided warranty ends. For me that means anything under 1000 bucks is not worth the warranty because in my head I depreciate these over a year or whatever the limited warranty period is. But when I bought my HDTV back when they were very expensive I wanted to make sure I had it longer than one year. It was worth it to me. I bought a 5 year warranty and thus depreciated it over 5 years. I was comfortable with having to replace it if it failed after that. Of course we all have our different perspectives on risk aversion and this our own approach to warranties. Just my two cents :)

 Are you telling us its a bad idea to buy Extended Warranties? I didn't buy an extended warranty - I never buy extended warranties. Right now I'm dealing with the original manufacturer's warranty.
The SWAP warranty that I am referring to is LG's policy of cross-shipping replacement LCD monitors to their end users.

Sorry, my misunderstanding.

LOL. No Problem. I hate extended warranties as well. Plus I've seen so many horror stories online.

Update on my situation: LG is going to replace the WH model with a WP model for me. They found one in Vancouver and they will be shipping it out directly to me. I'm pleased with LG customer service so far, they are pulling out all the stops for this swap. Its interesting to note that all my previous calls/emails were on file, so when I gave them the RMA number they knew exactly why I was calling. I just hate it when you call tech support and you have to explain your situation every time you call.

In this case I think maybe the person authorizing the RMA saw that the model numbers were similar and decided that I would be happier with a replacement sooner, rather than later.

So happy ending in this case, but this could have been avoided if they just told me beforehand that they didn't have any WP models in stock. And remember to confirm everything over email before you do any swaps.

I see some people mentioning build dates.
Are there known issues with certain build dates/serial #'s?
I had a far drive to pick one up, so I bought 2 just in case 1 had a problem. And now i'm wondering if I should open the newer serial or the older one?

ditto, mine just arrived today, manufactured May 2007. Are there any issues regarding that production date?
