What could be causing it?

I was attempting to OC my q6600 last night. I am wondering what could be causing such a drop in FPS described below. Memory? Memory controller?

I got it up to 3.6ghz, temps idling were in the 30's. I changed the voltages a little higher, gave my RAM some juice (2.10v) and it actually seemed stable to me. I then tried running 3dmark06 and was getting around 20fps on the first test, I usually get 80-90 there. I fired up Crysis beta and that was running under 4-5fps too. I went ahead and downclocked to 3.4ghz to find same issues, went down to 3.1 once again :(.

What could be causing it? Memory controller I assume? Any workarounds?

I tried changing my timings from 4-4-4-12 to 5-5-5-15

I thought 3dmark was mostly meant for testing video card? Try looking for a cpu program to benchmark like the SiSoftware Sandra. FSB in games are I'm sure is video driven and not much by the CPU.

But it still relies on memory, it really sounds as if that is the case to me. When I started my 3dmark06 I got an error saying that my sidebar on vista has errored out and loading took ages.

Did you by any chance update to the new nvidia gfx drivers? As I know a few people who are having probs with em.

start up a game and then alt-tab to the desktop and fire up cpu-z check that the PCI-e interface is still in the 16x mode. Some boards will drop it to 1x killing video performance. Its under the Motherboard tab - link width.

I did get the new Nvidia drivers, taht can't be the issue.
However, that's ver good idea, shall try it. If it did get dropped, a way to fix it?

Well you may want to roll back to the older drivers and test your rig. You can always re-install the new ones if it doesn't help.

Not sure how to sort the issue Bill raised.

This is a normal issue for many of the non-SLI conroe boards.

Set your PCIe frequency to any number between 98 and 103mhz. No higher and no lower. Usually 101 fixes this issue. My P5b-d and a couple of the PK5 builds I've done have had similar issues.
