Enemy Territory: Quake Wars demo coming Monday

Is there any info on what map it will be yet?
I'd heard a rumor that it was going to be Area22 which is one of the maps that was playable in the QuakeCon beta, but I'm banking on valley personally. Assuming it is valley, I'll pick it up just to feel out the changes made from beta2, but I don't know how much time I'll put in seeing as that's what I've been playing for the past month. You can only play one map for so long...

Usualy I despise Wallys' attitude towards things, but I'm right with him on this one ;)

The demo map is Valley, but they activated the river spawn point to make it a little less lopsided for the GDF trying to hack the shield gen.

I hope they fixed the problem with getting in vehicles. Everytime i run up to grab a gunner positition i kick out the driver.

Gahhh......Valley is craptastic.

I don't think ONE spawn point is going to "balance" the map.

All the strogg have to do is camp by the shield generator with all of their forces and it's neigh impossible to hack.

No new map FTL!

Waiting for this game to hit the bargain bin. After playing both betas, it won't take long.

Although I havent played it yet, based on the videos and gameplay mechanics of it, I can see why some people would bash it and call it a "Battlefield" clone. But what those people dont understand is that this is still a virgin company who's street cred lies on just one (free) game.

Atleast they're trying, and for what its worth, the game doesnt look too bad either.

There are plenty of ways. Hack or destroy any arti-interceptor turrets and drop a few hammers. Also you can get a tank right into the shield generator area plus it's great to just get a tank back near the strogg spawn.
Also the anansi is awesome for softening up the shield obj. Moving the MCP into place seems like a much harder task for GDF than the hacking obj. But it's usually because everyone is afraid of dying and you've got 3-4 people on the team actually trying to advance the MCP or clear the path of turrets while everyone else is playing DM.

I like the game a lot, personally its what BF2 should have been.

I dont mind the balancing, I think its very balanced. If the GDF works as a team they are hard to stop. As to hacking the shield, just launch off hammer into the shield area, will kill anything in that area, and 3 hackers can take it down pretty fast.

At least in this getting objectives and working towards them is so much easier and noob friendly than in BF2, without a good commanter and squads that game falls into a boring deathmatch with bugs. This at least you can work towards them with ease even if most of your team is a moron.

Also if you get someone to blow up the grate early, a few coverts can sneak to the generator and start hacking the instant the obj comes online. Or else go across the bridge and risk getting spotted. Plus it takes 60 seconds for obj "completion bar" to reset, so as long as you've got some coverts who are willing to make suicide runs, you can always keep the progress going. I honestly haven't seen many games that GDF wasn't able to hack it provided they had at least 7-8 minutes left after deploying the MCP at the depot.

I understand the game well and play the game well above and beyond the average player, hands down. 2/3:1 is easy in this game, pub servers anyways.

Hoping COD 4 is better. Game speed and popping heads at a quick pace is no issue, but this game has some serious gameplay issues.

I like it, mostly, but it has some serious issues that need to be resolved and I have no confidence SD can resolve them.

GLHF, see you in a better game.

I'm assuming he means the firefight gameplay - the impression that your weapons are having no discernible impact on your opponent until the second they stop running around in a big circle and suddenly drop dead.

They fixed the weapon spread issues that were present in beta1 with the introduction of beta2 and they've further refined them in the demo. If you're referring to the fact that you're opponent doesn't stumble if you shoot them in the leg or something along those lines, then just about every multiplayer FPS is guilty of that. CS, BFx, UT, and Quake firefights all have "no discernible impact on your opponent until . . . they drop dead."

The fights in etqw used to be a crapshoot in beta1, you're right, but the aiming is FAR more accurate as of beta2 and I find the fights much easier to predict now.

Hahaha, funny post. Summary: "I own in this game, you noobs are nothing to me, I win every game even though the game sucks, just take my word for it because I'm not giving you any supporting evidence or information but trust me since I'm awesome the game has issues."

No, nothing that far gone, I just found that when I played the betas, if there hadn't been a hit indicator i'd never have thought my shots were connecting.

That sums it up nicely, thanks.

Feel free, but I don't play BF :p

I'll admit I can't be bothered to state my reasons for not liking the game, but it doesn't change my opinion of it. I also admit I was pretty intoxicated when I made my original post.

But just like any game, people should certainly try it for themselves and make their own decision. Demo will be out Monday :)

You say the game has a lot of issues. That you don't think splash damage/id will fix but can't even say what you think is wrong with it ?

Wally's comment makes even less sense. I could see what he's saying if he's speaking of beta 1, but clearly he's not. So I don't know what he's talking about. I do remember him sticking up vociferously for the BF2142 beta, so there you have it. The game might not be mainstream enough for everyone, but I predict it will sell well enough. Wolf ET fans will lap it up. :D

Come next week, we'll have a lot more opinions to go by.

The demo had better fix those major lag issues. Last night i woulda killed nearly 6 strogg in a tank, but a lag attack happened and none of the hits registered then spit me back out at the reservoir. LAME! So then i decided to jump out and throw myself off the bridge. I hit the concrete below about 7 times until i was finally pronounced dead.

now that's funny :D

Dude you can't fault QW just because you don't have the 1337 Killer NIC in your rig.

Some ranked beta servers have atrocious lag. I don't know what's causing the problem because not every game or server is like that. The Hypernia servers are garbage and yet they seem to be the most popular during the beta.

FUCK YEAH, LEGENDARY GAMING

My thoughts pretty much .. I was hyped for this game until I started seeing some of the gameplay videos and reading opinions on just how so-so the game really is (coming from those playing the beta).

I've pretty much lost all interest now.. it's just another Battlefield-type game and one that I can safely avoid. Thankfully I'll be able to play the demo and see for myself just how bad it really is.

If you've got Quake 4, load it up on the very first level, and go to the point where the big fat strogg comes charging headlong toward you down a corridor, alongside some knackered-up steam pipes. Shoot it with the machinegun until it dies.

That's the effect I get when shooting people in ETQW: you have to hold down the button until the other person stops moving, pissing bullets at them and hoping you're hitting them. The hit indicator helps in some respects, but for me it's wholly unfulfilling. In most other games it takes anywhere between one hit (PR2, Insurgency) to four or five hits to kill someone (BFx, CS, CoD). The former is what I consider to be at the "real" end of the spectrum, the latter at the "pushing it" end of the spectrum. ETQW is so far over "there" (represented diagrammatically below),

PR2<----------->BF, CS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------> ETQW

that it's almost on another planet. That, coupled with the fact that all of the other games have anything from blood decals to twitches to puffs of smoke to give the impression your hits are connecting, whereas ETQW has a little red thing that flashes, is what i'm talking about.

I hope that's clarified things.

If it takes that long to kill someone, your aim sucks. 3 shots to the head with a lacerator and they're a goner.

This webpage shows:

Hit Location Damage Multiplier

Body & Arms 100%
Legs 50%
Neck 150%
Head 200%

http://4newbies.planetwolfenstein.gamespy.com/ETQW/

The damage in QW is comparable to the games you listed. 5-6 "hits" on the body will kill. Now if you're hitting the legs it does less damage. I suppose a blood model would be nice, but I've never been confused whether or not I'm getting hits. The sniper rifles kick up dust so you can make adjustments.

You bought MOH:A right ? I've only played the demo, but to me that game is an example of spray and pray. Horribly broken hit detection. The reviews have mentioned as much.

I'm getting the feeling some forum critics do not like the game. Which is fine. But there's a difference between not liking something and criticizing the game for having "flaws". The negative opinions expressed, for the most part, seem to be personal preference. You don't like the way it plays. But clearly some people have no problem with the gameplay. I'm trying to understand your points but can't empathize.

QW doesn't play anything like BF except in the most superficial sense. I take it you never played ET or RTCW MP ? I've seen other people say QW copied the idea of classes and medics dropping health. Of course these people never played RTCW MP, a game that predates BF1942. :D

the demo map is NOT!!!! slipgate!!!! the demo map is Valley!!!! stop spreading FUD.
did you even read the link you posted?

irst up is footage of the Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars demo, available in HD and normal-sized flavors. They also take a look at a map not previously covered at all - Slipgate

They don't say ever that the demo-map is slipgate, infact the dev's over in #splashdamage have said constantly that it is valley.
Makes sense for it to be valley, they already have a pre-package system they can just update rather then check it with a new map

After the first one, I got all pissy and finally picked up BF2 again. I'm still confused as to why we need anything else for multi + vehicles?

Did the beta 2 weapons still feel like nerfed pea shooters?

Some of us like the objective based gameplay of ET. I personally find it a lot more enjoyable than "camp the flags" until the opposing team runs out of spawn tickets gameplay of BF.

I know what you mean. The weapons felt terrible in beta 1. It was due to some hit detection bugs and crappy lag compensation. It was fixed in beta 2. Night and day improvement IMO.

Wow that Slipgate map sounds awesome ! 2 maps in one, and you can go back and forth between them.

But this is where this is unlike any other map you've played. Once the MCP goes through the Slipgate, the action suddenly warps to Antarctica, on a completely different map. The Slipgate is a wide open two-way portal. You can walk back and forth through it. You can fly through it. In fact, the Strogg can boost their defenses early on if one of them spawns at their rear base, the Nexus Tower Core, and brings the map's lone Goliath into the Sahara.
