The SPEC rate tests, especially SPECfp_rate don't really correlate that well with consumer applications. For example, the Quad FX -74 would beat a QX6700 by about 40% in SPECfp_rate 2006.I'll be interested in seeing if all of these improvements combine to create significant benefit clock for clock over the conroe based processors in consumer level benchmarks. If the clock speed ramp problem gets fixed, then I think they should have a winner on their hands.

Yeah, I realize that. Hopefully the other benefits they've put into the K8 core drastically improve the IPC in real world applications.
To me at least it really seems like they slacked off while they had the performance crown.
You can't expect AMD to kick Intel's ass every time. It's amazing that they were outrunning Intel for so long in the first place.
On the other hand, I do think that they need to shake up their upper management. They really need better marketing.

The Barcelona 2.6GHz chip doesn't even have an estimated ship date yet.

This is pretty pathetic.
AMD pulled the bogus benchmarks, just in time, too. spec.org is back up after being down a few days. Results like these official ones could be pretty embarassing:

SpecFP for Intel will improve with the faster FSB coming with 45nm Xeons. It will still trail behind Barcelona clock for clock (if AMD's projections are right), but it's moot since AMD will be at a 50% clock speed disadvantage

There was no problem with AMD publishing those figures back in April*. Publishing those numbers in late June on their web site is a problem for 2 reasons:are you going to make the claim that an optimized compiler isn't going to improve performance. As per the original April numbers those were correct,

EDIT: I just reread the article and it turns out that only lost them about 6 months. Considering that they released K8 in 2003, that doesn't really explain why we're where we are right now, but I think it gives us an idea that they weren't completely sitting around.
I think you underestimated the amount of resources that goes into processor developement. Do you realize that it takes about 250-300 engineers, ~3-4 years of time, and several hundred million dollars to develop a new processor? 6 months wasted development time is QUITE significant.

This was according to that anandtech article, and (if I remember correctly) an AMD employee himself said that they lost about 6 months worth of development time. Whatever resources it took, it's obvious that they weren't suddenly pushing the throttle to the floor to make up for lost time.

1) The Spec scores were no longer current. And for a chip set to be introduced in just a few weeks, AMD could do better than estimate performance. AMD instead chose to mislead in the face of superior competition.

2) AMD knew full well by that time that the 2.6GHz didn't even have a shipping date.
BTW, complaining about officially submitted Spec scores with full disclosure is a bit silly. I mean, c'mon officially submitted scores beat "estimated" (stalling) scores by a mile. If AMD had something that was all that, they would officially submit Spec scores soon since AMD claims it will launch next month. They aren't, because either the official scores are disappointing, or Barcelona isn't as close to shipping as they claim.![]()
* I lied, there is one problem: AMD would have known by April that they had no validation samples of the Barcelona 2.6GHz chip for servers. Server chips are not just slapped into important servers at the last moment, they undergo months of validation in chip manufacturer's and customer's testing labs. Ask yourself why the 1.9-2GHz speed hasn't budged in months for the "August/September" launch.![]()
