Abit IP35 (Bearlake)

Buff,

What is the URL for the Forum? I looked at the US one but it has very few postings.
http://forum.abit-usa.com/
818,500 posts ...

Unfortunately, the manual is not yet downloadable from the ABIT site. Do you know if the internal S/PDIF header carries the same audio information as the rear panel optical output?

Sorry, I don't know as I haven't really looked - I'm trying to steel myself to wait for X38 ...

edit: dang, just seen a screenie from Computex with a (modded) IP35 Pro running an E6400 (@7x) @ 610fsb ...
It's making it harder to hold out  :p

Many thanks for the quick response Buff!

Yes, I went back and had a look. Goodness knows what I was looking at earlier. In my defence, I posted before the first whisky of the evening, so my brain was probably addled…

Found and downloaded, thanks. WRT to the X38, got a 1KW PSU on order yet?:D

Cheers!

Board has come in, built & installed. Note that I got some cheaper parts for now since I will be taking a larger leap once the penryns hit & a top of the line Nvidia refresh Card. Or ATI if it's better.

Built

Abit IP35 Pro
Intel Core 2 Duo E4400/ Tuniq 120 HSF
PC Power & Cooling 1KW PSU
SB X-Fi FPS
7900GT OC
Crucial Ballistix PC26400 2 x 1 Gig DDR2

Only up to 2.15 GHZ so far & going up slowly. Since Im under Windows Vista Ultimate & it's very sensitives to OC'ing.

Test
2.15 GHZ @ 10 x Multiplier 860 FSB Stock Voltage Prime95, Orthos, Memtest All Stable
2.20 GHZ @ 10 x Multiplier 880 FSB Stock Voltabe Prime95, Orthos, Memtest All Stable

I heard that E4400s weren't great overclockers?

Ahh could be. Wouldn't even matter to me however. I will be happy to get it to at least 2.8ghz. It's simply a "for now"CPU since I'm jumping into the Penryn Quad Cores as soon as it is released. All test ran at 2.4ghz now & all is stable. Getting a little somewhere with it.

My IP35 Pro arrived today! Yeah, I'm stoked! Now, if I can just get my wife to leave me alone for a few hours so I can install it. My wife has an aura of ill-omen around computers... whenever she comes near me working on the computer, something always goes wrong. Pray for me, Brothers! :D

My girlfriend knows to leave me alone when I'm in the computer room for the most part. She tells me when dinner is ready, or asks me what I want for dinner and she says little else to me when I am in there. She knows I won't pay her much attention.

Yes, well my wife has no brain and no heart: she just uses my money, eats like a dog, and walks like a cow. The user-experience is terrible, and the price to performance ratio is entirely unacceptable. I'm currently shopping for a more recent generation model, and the selection is thankfully quite excellent so a drastic upgrade is pending. ;)

Now as for the board, I just got home, though I may be able to get it done when things quiet down.

Wow.

Was able to get my E4400 stable@ 2.5 GHZ with a .25 Voltage Bump to the Memory. System went unstable after 2.4 GHZ with stock settings. Would BSOD with a memory dump right before the sign in screen =).

-Edit. As soon as I posted this, the same error occured with the memory dump so I brung it back down to 2.4 & put back the memory to its default. Now I'll have to figure which route to take to push this system further =).

OK, up and running! I had to sprinkle salt in front of the door, then lock it. I could hear her scratching to be let in, growling, as fog rolled in from under the door. The lights flickered... damn! Cut myself on the Tuniq. Kept on focusing, got everything in, checked connections, opened the door and... she was with the baby: clear shot, and out I carried my new rig. Plugged it in, hit the button and... wife grabs me from behind, as the rig screeches C1. Patriot RAM, has worked in every rig I've ever put it in, first time, every time. The woman is just pure computer EVIL! Luckily I had some Corsair 8500C5D's as backup. Wife left, I wiped down the workstation with Holy Water, dried hands, installed 8500C5D's, and booted up. Holy Water works.

I've got Vista 64 installed (not one issue, fastest Vista install yet), drivers, now just getting programs installed then it's off to the races. Man, I'm grooving on the new memory dividers! Those will be some fun to cozy up with. This board at stock speed (266 FSB/1066 RAM) is faster, though I haven't gotten any benchmarks installed yet. Board's running several degrees cooler than my QuadGT. That's nice, with the Chongqing summer just kicking in. More later when I have tangible things to share.

P.S. No, the wife is not an animal in any positive way, and her only passion is for money. Were it a more carnal passion, well, that would be a certain plus, but as it is I'm not going to waste time with a cow, and if you saw my other options you'd agree. I don't have patience with other people shitting away my life.

you're fucking terrible

My question is this: If she's so bad why the hell are you still with her?

I know there is the old saying "it's cheaper to keep her" and that might be true, but is it worth being miserable over?

Actually I am leaving her, just getting things 'untangled'. I live in China, and here government agencies and businesses don't like to put important matters like child custody, long-term bills, and such, in a foreigner's name. But I have ten years in China, so history's on my side, wheels are moving, and things should be done by August. And no, she's not worth being miserable over, so I'm leaving her. Someone said (perhaps jokingly) that I'm terrible. Well, she doesn't love me in a genuine heartfelt way at all. I deserve that, so if it's a choice between doing what I must to stay sane and happy or staying with someone who doesn't love me, then the course to take is quite evident.

My IP35 Sandra memory bandwidth score at stock is 5600+, compared to my QuadGT's 5200+. A good omen, especially considering the Patriot ran a tad faster than the Dominator's I'm using now. Everst is similarly puffed. More later.

At the very least, both of you should have a look in the mirror. It seems as though that might be needed. Rather than pissing around with a computer, go spend time with your wife and kid (if you have any). It took me a little time to realize that but my marriage has been much better since.

PS, if you do leave her, then good luck with the PC. Wish I had the time to do that but it's now a once every three years upgrade for me.

PS2, This brings back fond memories of the old Genmay forum.

Looks like Abit screwed the pouch even more than Asus on the board lay out!

Abit screwed the pouch and the pouch said "ouch".. lube me baby, one more time? oy..
ok, yes.. me useless post count +1 ... or whatever..

as for the layout of this board, I think Dan said it all.. I hate that location of the cpu/aux power connector.. it's hard to get to in my case in general.. (lot of ATX configs will be tight on space there) and having the pwm sink so close doesn't help anything.. I reckon that's a good spot from an engineering standpoint with it being near the power inductors or whatever, but if you need to re-install boards with any sort of frequency that spot.. blows. everything else looks pretty ok.. I do like those 90deg sata connectors a lot tho.. they so rock!

Quick update. I thought my KillerNic had died, so I troubleshot with their support folks (awesome people, btw!) and they overnighted me a new card. Well, it wasn't the card. it appears this board is not currently compatable with the KillerNic. I just got off the phone with them and they are running down the tech specs of both the board and Intel's ICH9 chipset to see where the problem might be. I can also say thank goodness for system restore! Again, like the last time, after I tried the KillerNic and it ran super-slow, I uninstalled the drivers and re-enabled the onboard, only to have it no longer connect to the internet. I system restored to right before I installed the KN drivers and everyting is back to normal.

I'll update this when I know more.

Shawn

Hey Shawn! The IP35 Pro uses the Realtek 8110/8169 GBe. What chip does the KillerNic use?

Slacker6, thanks for the advice. Tried it dozens of times, but every time I bring up something she doesn't want to hear, she just runs away to her sister's house for hours (one of many issues with us, her sister) then comes home as if I'd never broached a subject. Two years and more of that behavior is enough.

I am sure you tried this, but maybe the pci slots were running over 33mhz? some cards can be sensitive about that..
and I know, I love system restore also.. it's gotten me out of a couple crazy jams. whew. probably one of the best seldom used features of XP.

You got it fuckin made bro!

If she sees me gaming, she's more inclined to bother me. If I am doing anything else in there she just usually figures I am working on a board review and that she needs to leave me alone while I work.

She does bitch sometimes that I don't make enough time for her.

I've got all the time in the world for mine... that is, if she'd talk about anything else other than money. I make about 7X the national average here a month, so it's not like we're hurting, at all. But start talking about any subject, and in just a few minutes the topic has been hijacked to money. Boring. It's like a fixation with her, never enough.

I was going to post my IP35 results, but now i'm just in on the Pepsiennis drama :D

Ok i'm running X3220 at 3.24ghz at 360 mhz fsb

It wasn't stable with 4 gigs of ram. So I had to pull 2 of them out. Kinda sucks.

Idling at 38C doesn't go over 50C when i'm doing something intensive. Will be priming soon.

So far it's rendering HiDef vids about 2 to 2.5 times faster than my Opteron 170.

Ultra 120 is great. Enermax Infinity keeps fans running for a min or two after PC is off. Great feature. Cmos switch ftw. mGuru is ftw.

I like the BIOS, but it looks definately simplified compared to DFI's.

Now Im at 2.5 Ghz Stable. Upped the Memory Voltage a tad bit more & adjusted the timings. Ran Pi & Prime 95 for about 6 hours. All is stable. Will continue to push it. Idle at 32C =).

Yeah, I apologize for the digression!

Well, I've got everything installed now, Vista activated, stable at my 24/7 minor OC of 3.2 (3204 9x356). Now this is the same as I was running on the QuadGT, but my voltages are much lower, thus temps are as well. My QuadGT I needed 1.2975, but on the IP35 Pro I just need 1.2675, and even that might be more than I need. With an ambient air temp of 30c, Idle temp is 40-load is 57 in Orthos (which was an hour's worth of stable). I haven't touched any other voltage except for Vdimm. With the wife mercifully absent, I upped that to 2.3v, switched in my Patriots, and off we go at 1068 @ 5-5-5-9-(2T). I put the 2T in parentheses as I don't see the option in the Bios. Man, I love this Patriot memory, what a secret they are! With the Dominator 8500C5D's in, Vista System Experience gave memory 5.7, but with the Patriots in, I get 5.9 (5.8 overall, though it's a useless index rating!). The shipping Bios thus far has none of the niggles that the QuadGT's original Bios had. Everything in the Bios has simply worked as you tell it to. If you have been in the QuadGT's Bios, it looks much the same, with only a few additions for the P35 chipset features. Oh, I forgot to mention last time: with the Tuniq Tower, the fan-bracket edge gets close to the tall NB heatsink, but it doesn't touch and there's still a little room for air between the two. It's much better than a Tuniq on a Striker (where the same edge actually seems to be resting on the heatpipe rail, hampering airflow).

I've got a little practical work to do (Gasp! Imagine such a thing!) and if I can finish before the cows come home, I'll work my OC upwards.

Wow. I have alot of things to say about that but seriously it's way off topic. Glad to see that some of the experiences with the board in question are good though.

Well, a big thanks anyway, Dan and all you guys. Hey, if life were easy, Darwin would have toodled around the Thames in a skiff, right?

Well, I have my distractions, mechanical (Umm, I mean PC's. I don't diddle doohickies! :p) and otherwise. As for the former, this board is running well right now. It is an interesting experience: the IP35 is so like the QuadGT in layout and installation that all my cords just stayed curled as they had been on the QuadGT, but it feels more... substantial, not only the physical qualities of the board, but in features. More like Intel has set its cap straight and firm on its brow and stepped up to the enthusiast plate, even though it's the X38 that's slated to be batting cleanup. In some ways it almost feels like an Nvidia chipset rather than Intel, only without the flakiness. This is one firm customer thus far. Let's see if I can still say that in a week.

I. Support DRAM Command Rate adjusting function.

II. Support CL=3 function.

Please note there have apparently been some reports of hard drives disappearing when running in AHCI mode.

Pro only as it has a separate BIOS from the IP35-E/IP35.
I caught that earlier & changed it (bad Lvcoyote! :p ).

No kidding, and looks and life are a TWO way street.... ;) With his attitude he deserves whatever he gets from the female half of the human race...

Now, now Manny. If it sounds unreasonable, if it seems out of the ordinary that such a terrible person exists, then perhaps that's because the situation is out of the ordinary. I picked up and left where I was living in Taiwan to meet her, does she appreciate it? No. Then even after I knew she wasn't the person I wanted, I married her to prevent her from being embarrassed in front of her family and friends, and because she promised things would be different after we were married (my heart wasn't yet cold then, you see?). Appreciation? No, and no. Month after month, I put my salary in her hands to manage for over a year and a half. Appreciation? No. In fact, at the end of that time she told me she had lost the money. Did i kill her? No! But I did keep my salary after that. And the litany continues, Manny, but this isn't the proper forum (excuse the pun) for this kind of thing. Suffice it to say, I have gone to great extremes for her, at her behest, and/or on her behalf, and have been met with lies, disrespect, and not an ounce of appreciation. I've given, lost, or perhaps even had stolen, enough to her. I owe her nothing. And if someone you cared about had treated you in these ways, your heart would turn cold to her, too. So be fair to a brother, and don't judge too quickly. OK? Thanks.

Now back to the topic... Buff, is the disappearing SATA optical drive act only in AHCI mode, or have you heard of it occuring when one is running the ICH9R RAID, as well?
