Dell 1501

Turion TL-50
2X512MB DDR2
120GB HD
X1150 graphics

etc.

Cost me £363 with an upgraded battery which as people from the UK will know is a very good deal.

Yea there is no doubt those dells are good looking machines though a 1505 would better suit me as I prefer intel processors in notebooks. Also the 1505 includes the media buttons.

I have no preference for brand personally, I know the intels are faster but I was on a very tight budget and it does fine for my uses (mostly editing pictures, watching video etc.) :) I have my main rig for more demanding things...

Had I had more to spend I probably would have went for one of the new HPs as they look brilliant, that or possibly a MacBook

Oh no its not the brand for me, the issue I have with the amd compared to intel for a notebook is the fact that they use more battery run hotter and generally are like you said slower. Did you see my HP above? Is that the kind you mean? I love it!:)

I would have recommended a MS trackball optical. Its an optical thumb trackball with 5 buttons incl wheel. Unfortunately they have been discontinued so now I am using logitech trackman wheel mice. I have one corded one and one wireless one on different pcs. They are almost as good as the microsoft model but they don't have a little slice button on each side for fwd/back browser function like the ms one did to make it 5 button incl wheel-button.

There is a learning curve though its not as bad as learning to use a mouse for the first time, and I feel that once you get skilled with one you become just as good or better than you were with a 'regular' mouse. Note that I turn the mouse sensitivity up quite a bit so that I can pan the whole screen corner to corner by rolling the trackball forward around 90deg and backward 90deg or so. It shouldn't take your thumb any extra rolls to cross the screen - if it does you should tweak your mouse settings. I also turn off enhance pointer precision and mouse acceleration by the way.

A huge plus besides the ergonomic feel is that thumb-ball doesn't require you to move your arm or the mouse base at all. They have anti-slip pads on the bottom of the mouse so you can just place the mouse anywhere on a surface. I find these types of mice especially useful with my laptop. If you aren't doing anything technical or just clicking around you can even sit the mouse on your lap/leg if you want to, or the arm of a lazyboy chair, etc.

I haven't used a mousepad since I got my original white logitech trackman marble many many years ago. It had to be early 90's though I don't remember exactly. I can still use a regular mouse on other people's computers but I dislike them. I will never go back if I can help it.

Here are a few bad pictures of my new laptop that I have sitting on my kitchen table at the moment. The pics came out bad (I think the camera is finally dying) but they give an idea of my laptop setup.

Bought a Thinkpad R60 a few weeks back to take care of school compatibility issues (they have their heads up their asses regarding Cisco VPNs & Vista 64); just got married and moved, figured I'd post the new laptop area as well. (along with the T60 widescreen & E1705)

And, what the hell, I'll even toss up the wife's X30.

This was taken an hour ago. My 7900GTX was corrupting textures in any game after a couple hours of game play. Dell was nice enough to send a tec' over to give me a 7950GTX upgrade, must have been out of stock of the old card. :D :D :D

You've got the new lappy and that big, beautiful Westy and the wife has that beaten up old CRT. You, sir, are a man who understands the natural order of things! :D

* HP QuickPlay: music, photos, and video in seconds

Bought this about a year ago and I've been using it ever since. I bought this type of laptop because it looks so 'professional'. You look like an adult when you use this laptop (IMHO), and that's what I want for people to see when I use this laptop. I have some plans about upgrading the memory from 1GB to 4GB.

My main uses for this laptop are:

* Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Professional (C++ Only)
* Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended
* Maxon Cinema 4D Release 10

+ I'm planning on upgrading my memory from 1GB (2x512MB) to 4GB (2xGB), any help is appreciated since HP said it can only handle a max of 2GB, but a guy posted in [H]ard (Click Here) and said that it depends on the chipset. My chipset it i945GM and Tekara said that it can support up to 4GB (Source: Intel's website^)

Dude take a look at the HP dock , it has altec lansing built in and looks hot since it matches the finish of you lappy. I use it at work and the audio is superior to the typical cheapo speakers

yeah that dock you mentioned looks nice. The stand itself that I bought was only like $20 though but the speakers I opted for to use on occasion are logitechs which I think were about $50. Still alot cheaper than the hp dock, though it has all the peripherals and port functionality mine lacks. Still thanks for the heads up on that dock.

Those logitech speakers sound really nice by the way, and they come with a nice little case that can fold up so they take very little room to store in my laptop backpack. I also have an altec lansing usb headset I use sometimes too. :)

Don't know what happened to the "Post your Mac" thread, so I'll post this here. Got a 12" Powerbook G4 the other day. I'm loving it so far. Its a lot faster than I was expecting.

With OSX reporting 60 battery cycles, I lasted almost exactly 2 hours and 20 minutes watching videos (so screen is constantly on half brightness, hard drive is constantly being accessed, and I kept Airport on). I have a new battery on the way and we'll see how long it lasts.
