PNY 8800GTS 320MB in game failures

I just bought this PNY 8800GTS from Compusa on sale for 269. Smokin deal right? Well, considering that my ATI 800XL has worked flawlessly in every system I have built it into...and now I can't even play any of the games in system...NO.

The situation looks like this...System runs fine once ATI was removed and the GTS was installed. Running the latest driver 158.22 from Nvidia's site. BTW my system looks like this:

WinXP
Gigabyte M55SLI-S4 Rev2
Athlon X2 2.2Ghz
2 Seagate Barracudas 320GB
1 GB OCZ DDR2 800
Creative Xfi Xtreme Music
Samsung Snycmaster 712n analog LCD

So, now I go into BF2 or GRAW...loads into menus then once I go into game, the screen artifacts like crazy and turns yellow and black then the system hangs.

What is the issue? Any suggestions?

Going to my EVGA 8800GTS 640, I've noticed some subtle problems also that I didn't have with my 7800GT. LIke when exiting games like counterstrike, it will sometimes take 30 seconds to exit???? I thought my system locked up.

I've also had some other small issues. But you have a completly different problem, you probably have a defective video card. I'd start out doing a clean reformatt and load everything up fresh and start from there.

I would tend to agree. or at least run some kind of driver cleaner and reinstall the drivers..

It is a PNY after all. Certainly not the most reputable MFG of Nvidia cards. You may have gotten a lemon.

Dont they all just put their stickers on them anyway.

Not necessarily. ASUS for example will add various features like improved cooling system because they often overclock the card. eVGA does that as well. Other manufacturers will do similar things of their own choosing. Some companies do nothing special at all. PNY used to be a good company but I dont personally feel they put out as good of quality video cards as they used to. But thats just my own opinion.

Still, regardless of who made the card it sounds to me like the OP got a bad card. It does happen. Even from the better manufacturers. After wiping and reinstalling drivers I'd return the card if it still doesnt work properly.

So I took back the card and exchanged it for an identical one. This time when I went into GRAW, I could start the first mission and it looked great...for a minute...then it crashed into a black window and shut down the video card.

Then I tried BF2, would almost load into a game, but right after the status bar reached 100%, the system would hang, then go to a blue screen that said window has suffered a serious error and will restart.

Maybe these cards are $80 off cuz they SUCK....

...I am about to try my installation of Vista Premium I did last night on the same system but a different hard drive. Lets see if the operating system will change anything...

Nobody makes the cards anymore, nVidia provides the cards. ASUS is nVidia's manufacturing partner now, MSI used to be.

All they do is put a sticker on them anymore.

So here is the latest findings running all the same system components with the excetion of running under a single harddrive formatted with Vista Premium. FEAR and BF2 both work so far and seem to run flawlessly. With the exception of my Logitech G15 LCD telling me my RAM usage in game is maxed out, things seem fine. I just ordered another gig of OCZ to solve that problem.

So, what is the XP problem. I have been told by others that this card works great under XP. Does anyone have any driver suggestions? Its gotta be driver related...right?

I know this is off topic but until you get more memory you will never get the full enjoyment of your new video card. 1 gig doesnt cut it for gaming.;)

What's your power supply?

i have the same power supply and so does my uncle, and they both work fine! he runnin sli on it, with two 7900gt's. but its not suppose to run sli, i tjhink some things are happenin

ouch thats harsh.

Yeah. So is buying a card that craps out after 2 months, or a couple of DIMMS that won't do rated timings without tons of memtest errors.

PNY used to be ok. It seems as though they do better at producing garbage and RMA's than a worthwhile product these days.

I would love for you to prove that PNY has a more defective card rate than Evga and others.

WARNING! WARNING! CRAP POWER SUPPLY ALERT!!!

2NDed. I would first look at that PSU. A simple way to check it is to take a unused molex connector and hook a digital multimonitor to it and watch it while this is happening. If your 12v or 5v drop this could be the cause of your problems.

Oh, and RAIDMax is known to have crappy PSU's along with good models as well. If it came with your case, I would bet it's a POS.

Certain suppliers get a reputation. It certainly isn't by accident. Of course the above is my opinion and experience with said supplier....as such I feel no need to prove anything to you. I'm sure you can find enough people to echo my sentiments about PNY. *shrug*

.....but all the cards are made in the same factory. Maybe it's the sticker that PNY puts on it that makes more of the PNY cards go bad?

Or pehaps it's a shoddy QA process. I'm sure these vendors aren't supposed to test the cards when they come in, eh? Just take em, slap on a sticker, and ship them out.

But yes, the sticker could be the cause

PNY only sucks because their "Lifetime" warranty is only the product lifetime. If its no longer produced, its no longer under warranty.

PNY are a bunch of fucktards.

Thats completely your opinion and here is mine.....I have had two PNY cards that were both fine expect for a fan on one that starting going bad after 18 months. The card was under warranty and quickly replaced in under 10 days. The only new video card I have ever had a problem with is EVGA and so have countless others. Most people that run their mouth about how good Evga and BFG are have also had to do several RMAs with them so go figure.

I am pretty sure that PNY probably doesn't handle the cards at all. They most likey provide the packaging to nVidia's manufacturing partner and it is all handled by them.

About the only thing that differs these card manufacturers anymore are the warranties. Sure BFG and EVGA and even Leadtek do some custom stuff with the cooling and garrantee overclocked versions. But tThis isn't 1999 anymore and these graphics cards are so complex nowdays regarding the PCB, that it is too expensive for each seller to be responsible for designing or adapting a reference design for at best, 1yr of manufacturing before it was obsolete.

Guess that was lucky for you, because at least the people who have had EVGA cards have had stories of their RMA cards going well. I haven't heard much about PNY RMA's going as smoothly.

I would agree with TheInternet1980, companies don't usually get reputations based completely on false information. People are buying PNY right now because when they click on the 8800GTS/GTX and sort from lowest to highest price, PNY is the first one they see :D

And I'm sure Riddlinkidstoner probably has more insight than all 3 of us, I'm pretty sure he's a computer tech.

When my fan starting going out on the PNY 6600 I gave PNY a call. I wasnt even put on hold and the guy quickly emailed me an RMA form and shipping label. I printed it out and shipped out the card the next day. 3 days latter I get an email saying they have the card and are sending out a replacement. I recieved my new card in less than a week atfer they got mine. That has been my only RMA with any company and it was painless.

My PNY GTS320 has been rock-solid for two months and runs cool and fast as hell. I don't forsee any problems in the 12-month lifetime that the card will be in my system.

Since the OP never posted temperature measurements and has a low-end power supply, I suggest that that is the problem. Could also be a software issue if the XP install isn't a fresh format or he didn't use Driver Cleaner.

That's pretty good.

OK let's get this straight once and for all. Pay really close attention.

ALL of the current G80 boards are manufactured by Flextronics under strict contract with nVidia corporation. From manufacturing the cards are shipped out to the various retail board partners which include but are not limited to EVGA, XFX, BFG, MSI, Asus, Foxconn, etc.

When the board partners recieve the cards they (usually) place a retail sticker featuring their branding/logo on the OEM nVidia cooler. Then the card is placed in retail packaging and sent to vendors for retail sale. Sometimes the card goes through rudimentary testing at the board partner facility, but often times this isn't the case.

The only time anything significant is done to the cards is in the case of "pre-overclocked" cards in which the board partner will test the cards for stability under higher clockrates, and then "bin" the cards for flashing with a custom BIOS which features those clock rates. There are also a couple of board partners who are selling extremely high end cards which undergo rigorous stability testing at high clock rates and are fitted with custom waterblocks for retail sale at a premium.

Any increased reliability problems with G80 boards with the PNY brand are either non-existant or exist due to subpar handling at their packaging facilities.

I stand corrected, I could have sworn it was stated that ASUS took the contract from MSI. I must have mixed up forum lore with fact. My bad. But the point is that BFG and PNY and EVGA among others do not manufacture 8800 cards.

For those of you that are not in the know, it has become commonplace for Flextronics in China to build the first runs of high-end new-release video cards for NVIDIA that are then dealt to the AIC partners for branding.

I am not sure why you would call my PSU a "low end" unit...It has been rocksolid since I got it and I purchased it based on 2 recommendations from computer builders I trust. Since XP was the problem and games run fine under Vista, I can only assume it was a driver issue of some sort. I have considered reinstalling XP, but I just did it 1 week ago when I got my motherboard and did use a driver cleaner and reg mechanic.

What is interesting is when I was running under my ATI X800XL everything was perfect under XP but when trying to run anything under Vista it was the problem I am having now in reverse.

Just because Raidmax is NOT known for making quality PSU's... although I do think they do make some decent ones that don't come with their cases. If you spent a bit of money on it, it's probably fine. Usually though, the name Raidmax and power supply are a scary thought :p

Is it the RAIDMAX RX-630A? It's probably ok, more than enough to run your video card and lots of peripherials. But if you look... my power supply is only 460Watts and it has the same Amp ratings on the 12V rails as yours :D

Don't be worried about the power supply, it's fine. If your card is working in Vista then happy gaming!

Well, your voodoo has struck my system. As I was working on it tonight, the PSU ... FAILED ... GOD! Computers are a damn expensive hobby. Anyway, I got myself a Coolermax 650W extreme power duo and I am also reformatting WinXP as we speak to see if that solves that XP problem. More to come on my super fantastic adventure...

that sucks. hey you might as well upgrade your memory to 2 gigs while you are it. no point in holding back the gaming potential of the 8800gts.

Thats already done. will be here tomorrow! Yippee! I need to plant a money tree ;)

Be glad you have two expensive hobbies. I spend thousands on bicycling every year so I have to be conservative with my pc spending. Let me know when the tree blooms. ;)

This is why I don't cycle or play golf (yet). Surfing, wine and computers are expensive enough! I didn't even count the fiance in that list either. I think I am gonna need more than 1 tree...
