Tom's Hardware Sold

This isn't really "news". I thought it was obvious that they had been sold a while ago. They just made it official.

I wouldn't even consider hardocp a real hardware site like anandtech or tomshardware. Whenever I think of anandtech and toms are more formal sites or business sites. I proffer to go to hardocp because the fact that it has the feel of a community based hardware site. Doesnt have close to as much publicity for one side or the other, that I felt anandtech and toms would play on. Still hardocp does pull some !!!!!!sh stuff, I was pissed off when hardocp did that stunt when intel launched the intel core 2 duo(and I am even and amd fan).
REALLY? THG a buisness site? It's an advertisement and pop-up bandwidth- hogging SOB.
Good luck reading through 30+ pages of adds, to get to the summery that was bought by the sponsers. Shhesh!
Anand I will concur is more buiness oriented.
HardOCP? is ghetto the way we like it! I came here the day Kyle strapped heatsinks to an Elsa Erasor and I bought some tape from here myself to do the same to my graphics card! Made for a wicked gaming rig that was oh so ghetto! Tom Pabts' site was always about what the sponsors chose to say. Enough said.

Maybe with this purchase, some changes will be made that make the site useful again. I used to read it faithfully along with here and Anand. But Tom's just went down the toilet 2 years ago. The articles were useless, the layout gave me a migraine, I started only looking at the Benchies. I think it was then I discovered *cough* a certain magazine...

The $$$ amount posted it just a rumor. There has been no official amount released yet.

Makes me wonder how much traffic HardOCP generates compared to the forums. Be intresting to see some numbers on that.

Let's hope that the new company doesen't make tom's hardware worse but better ;)

To quote my own signature (which quoted another forum member a long long time ago)

Confucious say. HE WHO READ AND BELIEVE TOMS HARDWARE IS FOOL!!!!!!

Wow I can remember when these sites were starting. (Kyle would personally answer my emails) I remember the big brew ha over Toms being "sold out" and a kiss an makeup session at a tech convention (participants will remane nameless). It's funny that one incident soured most of us about Toms. It was definitely THE review spot back in the day though. I designed plenty of rigs based off their review. But that much money??? Dayum.

Since I don't have any insight into the THG deal nor do I know anyone personally over there, I'll refrain from commenting on their deal specifically. I am withholding judgment and comments on the deal because it isn’t my place to say anything.

BUT...for those of you that are "amazed" at the amount of money being paid for a website, there are some things that easily get forgotten when big numbers like that are bandied about. Think about this:

Let's just pretend there is a place called (W)ebSITE that started out as some rinky dink Quake page almost 10 years ago. The guys worked night and day doing all the news and reviews themselves. Sacrificed time with friends, family and themselves to put out the best FREE content they could. All the hardware for the reviews came from their own pockets. All the hardware the site and their forums run on were also out of pocket. The more you grew, the more it cost. This website survived the Dot.Com implosion. They survived lawsuits costing hundreds of thousands of dollars and survived the competition.

Eventually, the site grew enough to earn money through advertising and everyone was able to make a salary doing their jobs, nothing fancy, but getting there took a long, long time. Dedication and commitment to their readers was essential and none of it costs a reader a single thing. No one has become rich from the website and everyone still works long hours making it a website you want to visit.

The time comes to sell, someone says "I will give you $10 million for (W)ebSITE." While that may sound like a lot of money (you probably have that invested in the site by now) but then you have to consider the fact that taxes eat up a huge portion. Then, you split the money between the ten people you work with and everyone ends up with enough to maybe buy something nice / fancy. Doesn't seem like a whole lot when you've invested 12 - 16 hours a day, 7 days a week for 7 to 10 years...now does it?

Just something to consider.

This May is my 7th year with Kyle, the [H] and with you guys. We have been through damn near everything possible on the planet together and I stand by what I said earlier…I wouldn't trade it for anything...it’s priceless :)

Just for the record I still answer all my emails personally.

Remember that German bastard back-stabbed the shit out of me when he attacked us for devoting our news coverage to the events of 9/11? He said we did it for nothing but commercial gain. That POS can rot in hell with the rest of the Nazis. Yeah, I just said that and I mean it.

I also could not understand how some hardware websites suddenly turned into wannabe competitors of CNN, posting evermore of the horrible news and even pictures of the disasters where they usually listed the 25th heat sink review of some hard core super overclocker. Who would read that? Is there indeed anyone that has Internet but no television and no radio? Can't we leave the capitalization on terrible news to CNN (the main beneficiary of the such lovely events as the Gulf War, the OG Simpson trial, Lady Diana's death and the presidential election chaos) and the likes? Is there indeed 'no business like show business' even in times like that?

It might be bad business practice, but I decided to stay out of all that, because I do not think it is the place of a hardware website to capitalize on events such as this. No hardware reviews and no pictures of burning or crashing WTC-towers. An apology had to do, if the people liked it or not. There was no choice.

And you can keep in mind what Tom has stated publicly as well a year after that.

Today, however, I was informed about a fight that's going on between Kyle Bennett and Van Smith, the two people in this 'PC Hardware World' that I despise most.

THG got me into OCing way back in the day. Too bad Tom turned out to be someone that would talk to you just to get something from you.

While I won't get into it, I'll just say that I do love this place, I always have. I joined a long time ago under a different account that I ended up having closed to create this one in the recent past - so my current post count doesn't really apply, although I will say I've been more active in the past 6-8 months or so than I ever was under the previous account.

Suffice to say it's a unique place on the web. I remember yarns ago when THG first got off the ground as one of the earliest "tech" websites. I remember actually emailing in suggestions and tips - and even correcting a lot of the info that was just flat out wrong and surprised to see it actually corrected and sometimes, but not always, credited to me personally since I pointed it out.

But that was a long long time ago, even if I do still remember it quite vividly.

This is my [H]ome now, so to speak. I'm still a member of a lot of forums that I hit frequently (under the other nickname I've had for 2 decades now, br0adband) and I keep up with whatever the hell is going on.

The post above that Kyle just made shows me why this place is so cool - it's because of him and the people he surrounds himself with like Steve and a few others. It's the "Here's the real deal, and we ain't gonna sugarcoat it" attitude that I find not only refreshing but have every right to fuckin' expect from such a place. I want the truth, and nothing but the truth, and when I see it, when I hear it, I know what it is and can appreciate it just that much more because of it.

So kudos to Kyle, Steve, and the people that keep this place hopping over the years. It ain't perfect, but then again, if it was it would be the most boring place on that thar Intarweb, now wouldn't it? :)

Keep up the phenomenal work.

Priceless, indeed...

Yea, I got my start over there, but lost interest like practically everyone else here. I joined the advisory panel, then wish I hadn't. I don't qualify since I am not a captain of industry it seems. Well, the last "captain" I spoke to knows nothing about the hardware, so why does his opinion matter anyway?

It all seems geared to the stock market now, not [H]ard news and reviews, but reasons to invest in such in such company. These are the same people that buy from CDW because they want the business relationship, never mind the specific hardware. The same people that are stuck on IE since they have no clue what a browser is anyway, let alone Firefox.

I am not much of a community poster, takes too much time to read the threads, but this site does cater to my interests rather well. I too have had Kyle answer a couple of emails, and was quite pleasantly surprised. I then tried to participate more in the forums and try to restrict my use of email to lessen his burden even though it increases mine. Somewhat out of respect, but I do learn some things as well.

As with most companies, when the founder leaves, the company usually looses focus. I read THG when Tom was there. I didn't know he left, but I know it has been years since I saw him there. I lost interest when they started their German office, their reviews just missed the mark.

Kinda funny how we all here seem to read the same sites. I read both here and there around 2001, but was unaware of the bad blood between Tom and Kyle though.

About the many pages and ads, well, I cannot in all honesty surf without scriptblock and adblock anymore. The adware companies have too many greedy players that install spyware. These tools allow whitelisting though, so I use it. I allow the ads here. Good sites need to be supported, just as good software should be paid for, not just downloaded over P2P. Every ad that originates from this site is displayed, I don't trust the others. Besides that, most of the ads here are at least close to relevant to me anyway. I'd have never seen ClubIT otherwise, now I check them out all the time.

The great thing about a forum, as well as its' greatest weakness, is anyone can be anyone. From a CEO, to the next Steve Jobs, or even a middle-aged football fan with an eMachine running Win98. (no that isn't me :) Everyone has an equal say, so I don't pay too much attention to the [H] status. That could just mean that they have been sniveling on and on around here for far too long about nothing. The forums posts are not "dugg," at least not yet. :)

So cheers and kudos to Kyle for putting together the 'nets greatest hardware site and keeping it together for all these years. Now I am gonna go find an ad around here to click on...let see, I do need to go to newegg anyway...

Same here...I never visit there these days.

Several of the original sites that got me going at the start are now gone:

voodooextreme.com
agn3d.com (Any word on Jeremy Allford?)

I hate to see favs like the [H] and Anand change/go away but it is probably inevitable. Tom's just went to complete crap several years ago.

Between [H], Anand, AVSforum, and FiringSquad, I basically get everything I need technology-wise whatsoever. If I want extra entertainment coverage for comics/games/movies/etc., IGN. I forget Tom's even exists until someone who is clueless says on a Fatwallet posting, "Hey doodz dere's dis kewl aerrtikal on toms!!!!!!11 it sez yoor product roolz!", at which point I shake my head in disbelief at the ignorance. It's just been a pathetic site for as long as I can remember, even back in their "glory days" where they were very slightly, vaguely resembling something OK of a site.

Just adding... I've been here since late 2000 if I remember correctly, but became inactive during a purge period for a couple of months and re-made the account.

See that big spike at the beginning of March?

:)

I'm not sure what the vertical scale is on that graph.

Percent, as in a thousandth. This compares page views for THG-red, Anandtech-blue, HardOCP-green, and hardforum-brown, try the link:

it gives you this:

Just don't know how osalcido got the site boxes at the bottom though.

I used to be a forum member back at THG in 1997/98. About 2001 or 2002 he cut off the forum that he ran and that is when I moved on. Every now and then I would visit his site to read up on some reviews. I didn't really have a problem with his hardware site until he went on this anti Rambus rampage. I was an RDRAM rambus supporter and to this day still think RDRAM was the better technology over DDR, but Tom for some reason hated anything Rambus. It was almost like he had a personal beef with the company or something. After that I decided that if a reviewer has that much bias for a certain company how true could the site be to everyone else?

Still, 20 million for an internet site? Wow that is actually amazing!

^^ yikes learn some fucking manners! even though I wouldn't delete your UID you're way outta line. anonymity running its mouth once again. how fucking ignorant

It's off topic I suppose, but I have to add that I hate Rambus and agree with Tom on that point. Rambus may have been a superior technology, but it was the result of the theft of technology from the group that designed SDRAM. The company behind Rambus was nothing more than a bunch of lawyers. They were part of that group discussing RAM designs with the understanding that they could not patent it, since all players would be using the technology together. Rambus left the group, patented the tech, then sued the other members. I don't care if they introduced the isolinear chip, that is vindictive business practice and should be punished. We should all strive to see the bigger picture, there are always ulterior motives, bad press and propoganda to sway you.

ROFL
Nothing like someone who bites the hand that feeds him eh?

hardOCP doesn't feed me anything, except, as evidenced by Kyle's sentiment above, an overbearing sense of ego. Yay! for them that the survived the litigation with Infinium. I still say that, even taking into account "free speech" I AGREE that his approach to them was .. shall we say .. uncalled for. Hundreds of companies have had paper launches, yet, it seemed that Kyle had something SPECIFIC against this company.

I think of Kyle & Steve as being just like our president. Convinced of their own greatness, and nobody, nowhere, no how could possibly say anything that makes them doubt that. Maybe it's a texas thing, I dunno.

I know hardFORUM is a part of HardOCP, but, much like A.B.C. is a part of disney corp, that doesn't mean I have to like disney corp to appreciate an episode of LOST.

hardFORUM has merit. hardOCP, imho, does not.

Kyle comes on way to strong. Maybe Tom is a jerk. In fact, tom probably is a jerk, i'll give him that, but "fucking nazi?" no.. Kyle comes across, at least, to me, as the iron fisted ruler type that he seems to so hate, not the benevolent dictator that he could be.

In all fairness, since I don't go to hardOCP.com anymore (unless I'm click-thru-ing on some news post that went to some OTHER site that actually reports halfway decently) I can't truly say that the quality of information in the articles is still sub-par.

I gave up on hardOCP when they started running video tests on different cards at different resolutions as a method of showing what card X can do that card Y can't. Telling me an "CARD X" can run GAME-z @ 1600x1200 but that a "card y" can run it at 1024x768 doesn't REALLY give me a comparison of the card's performance, it just shows me what their threshold is. It might seem logical, but when I'm trying to judge overall performance of a card, it doesn't help me to show them at different resolutions. Different resolutions offer different challenges to different cards. CardX might outperform CardY @ 1600x1200, but CardY might outperform CardX @ 1280x1024... - Show me a bench that gives me the framerates at the SAME resolution, and i might be interested. Additionally, there is SO much bias in their reviews (like the ECS KN1 review that I dug up to prove a point to someone) about their preconceptions of products that it's hard to take the reviews seriously.

Why is it that it seems Kyle is always in a tiff with someone? THG, infinium.. who is next? (me, I guess)

If you find my UID banned/deleted, then.. that'll show you what they think of free speech.

For the Alexa ratings, we should also consider that THG combines their forums under their TLD/FQDN:

Where people go on Tomshardware.com:

* tomshardware.com - 82%
* forumz.tomshardware.com - 13%
* images.tomshardware.com - 2%
* gb.tomshardware.com - 1%
* compare-prices.tomshardware.com - 1%
* stores.tomshardware.com - 1%

So combining hardocp.com with hardforum.com would be about the same as anandtech, just under THG. But Alexa gives percent of total internet page views, how does this translate into actual page views? Thousands per day? Though I am sure there are more unique visitors to the main page than the forums. As much as I want this site to succeed, I don't want it to lose focus and target the general audience to get there as THG has.

Then it was pretty hypocritical of you to post what you did then.

If you don't count the servers... ~$20-$30
HardForum on the otherhand?
That's the real value. I never go to HardOCP anymore. Haven't read an informative article in years.

Personally I love the community aspect found here, and this is easily one of my favorite websites.

Not really. I am stating that I no longer have a use for hardOCP based on the experiences I had with the content on that site.. My opinion is based on prior experience. Lets take an example.. A few years ago, you tried, say.. tiramisu, right? Now, lets say you decided you don't like it. Does that mean that you should try it again, sometime later, or are you pretty certain that you still won't like it..

If you look at the bottom of this forum, it says "Community site to HardOCP" not "same fucking site as hardocp"

Right, and that sense of community is at hardOCP.com ? Or is it on hardforum.com where individual users interact?

If you can't understand the difference, in that, hardocp.com is an "online magazine" and that hardforum.com is a SEPERATE (albeit, related) person to person bulletin/discussion board, then I can have nothing but pity for you.

Good point.

I would say the guys writing for hardOCP certainly give a good effort and try to be honest about their reviews. In general, I find there writing to be objective and in tune with much of their audience wants/interests.

Of course, you can't please all the people all the time. That's where the forums come into play. Hardforums are a very complimentary product to the HardOCP site and as a business model, it works for the the site owners/employees and for most of as readers.

It's definitely my first tech visit site of each day.

if you enjoy playing at 640x480 on all of your systems, have fun. for the rest of us that appreciate knowing the max of a graphics card at a liveable framerate, there is [H]. for everything else, there is ignorance. (Blatant mastercard rip off.)

I cant REMEMBER the last time i didnt enjoy reading an [H] article.(im talking for the content, not the verdict if it contradicts what i hope for :p ) and the Consumer reviews are top fucking notch. if you believe those are worthless, you need to rethink your use of the internet.

Kyle has gotten in to this argument before. and ive watched many a time. no one gets banned for arguing with Kyle. sometime i think Kyle enjoys it :D (Masochist maybe? :p dont kill me ;) ) but seriously, hes the only decent source of hardware fun ive been able to enjoy for AGES... i remember back in the day when i was ignorant and enjoyed perusing THG... oh GOD those were dark days :D

I've been here awhile, longer then my join date suggests. How many of you actually know what OCP even stands for? Or how many of you know what the Unreal Framerate Comparison Page was? Just wondering. I remember these things.

It was solely due to Kyle that I bought a BH6 and 300A, I likes my L2 cache after all, and then a dually BP6/366@550 setup. Kyle for this I thank you. I rarely visit the mainpage anymore. It used to be a four or five times daily thing, but now it's just been dumbed down in my opinion. Add to that some reasonably clear biases that exist for whatever reason and you have my current view of the state of affairs.

I don't visit Anand, or Sharky's, and have NEVER visited Tom's. Except to laugh, sometimes back in the day that guy made me laugh with his shenanigans. I used to visit Ars a whole lot, not so much anymore, all those sites have taken a dive. I currently find myself spending most of my time on B3d forums. You know, with the devs and all. I'm just a 3d junkie at heart though, so whatever floats your boat.

To be one hundred percent honest I miss the old hardocp. Before the [H], and before the articles were brought in line with broadcast television standards of intelligence. Again, whatever floats your boat. ttfn. Thanks again for that BH6/300A suggestion Kyle, seriously. I was a Quake2 deity. ;)

I'm pretty sure the ias youre noticing is the fact that release dates for hardware now a days are so off kilter, for about 6 months at a time, there is no contender for the top spot in whatever category :p

CyberDeus just reminded me of a VERY funny story, true to life…this actually happened…you have to be a forum member to appreciate it.

We went to a local car show hosted by one of the members of our car club. Great BBQ, good beer, great band, lots of cars…just an all around good time and it was a totally free event. You didn’t need to own a muscle car to come, you just show up. A great day of checking out all the cars, hang out, have some food and meet other people that like old muscle cars too.

About mid-day, some jackass is loud, drunk, calling people names and badmouthing the host to anyone that will stand still...AS he continues to eat the free food, drinks the free beer and listen to the free live band. Eventually he was asked to leave (thus proving his point that the “host” was an asshole  ) and sure enough, here comes the “it’s a free country…” speech as he calls the host a prick. He is soon escorted off the property.

One of the guys showing his car next to mine says “Jeez, can you believe that guy?” and before I could say anything, my buddy says “you’ve never been to the [H]ardforums, have you?” …everyone laughs.

it SO amusing watching the people who shit where they eat :D Kyle just retorts so well to them :D those make for some of the most amusing threads on this forum outside of genmay :D which is the greatest over all section :D and cars is there  so its even better :p

It's very simple. You originally posted that you believed that [H] was worth $20-$30 based on the fact that you haven't read an informative article here in years. The implication being that you have read articles here over the past few years.

You then followed it up by saying that you haven't actually read any articles posted at [H] in years.

Hypotrical.

What does this even mean? Seriously?

Just because he read articles here, doesn't make them informative. If you can't see the difference here it's because your middle school English teachers failed. Whatever, don't blame it on him.

To Steve: I pretty much stopped reading the site when you were hired as a frontpage news poster =D. I know you don't care, up in Alaska with your hot-rod Cameros. Yeah yeah, you could kick my ass, you bench more then I weigh, you correspond with Asia Carrera, I don't care. Hypothermia is and always was mediocre. Except for the damn Killer Gaming Rigs, those were fucking incredible. I love you for those. Other then that, well lets just say it's kind of love/hate. I'm sure you know what I mean.

If Kyle does read this before this account is banned, post deleted, w/e. Thanks for the page way back in the day. It was a shining beacon of overclocking information in a bleak world wide web. ttfn.

Sorry to double post, couldn't find the edit button.

Any takers as to the OCP challenge? Obviously Steve knows, but I checked most of your guys' join dates in this thread they come up lacking.

If you win the challenge I will present a second question, mostly regarding the type of HS/F Kyle was famous for putting on a TNT2. Good luck my friends. Here's a hint: it was also the best HS/F at the time to run your Socket 370, or whoa get this Slocket CPUs with.

maybe they will start publishing some higher quality articles
Usually it gets worse after a sell out cause the real tweakers are the first to go somewhere else. And more readers asks for more bad middle of the road publishing...everybody has to be grey now instead of different vivid colors.

I could be wrong here, but then again I'll be 40 in 7 weeks, sue me - but iirc OCP worked out to Overclocking Comparisons Page? Might have been OverClocking Pursuits, or something similar. Either way, even though the grey matter inside my head is now being paced by the grey matter growing on it that's what I recall. I've been around here since it basically first found the light of day, more or less.

And just so you know it, and I didn't do this first, before I decided to hit Submit Reply or answer the questionI thought, "Hell, let's hop in the Time Machine, Mr. Peabody, and head back to ~late 1998/early1999 when Hard|OCP first appeared on this thing we call the Internet:

The first full page of Hard|OCP stored at Archive.org from August 28, 1999

It actually has a page listed from April 28, 1999 but there's no real content to speak of. The August 28th page is missing some pics, but that's pretty much "way back" in the day where it all really began. And if you look at the bottom of the page in the headers, you'll see my memory ain't as bad as I thought it was. ;)

Kyle: If you read over this, can you remember or can someone point out the exact date Hard|OCP went live? That day should be/will be approaching soon enough and I wanna make a note of it for the 10 year anniversary when it happens. Should be a helluva party... :)
