Blackstone,

Gotcha on all accounts.

I also use the Squeezebox3, but am inputing to a PS Audio Digital Link DAC III... I'm going to do a search on your particular Delius. The Squeezebox3 is ok... but I think that I'm moving to a Sonos.

Thanks!

Yes, but is your dad going to allow you to do such a thing?

The best thing is playing Gears of War or Fight Night 3 on the 360 through my system... such a rush!!

My dad doesn't have an HDTV in that room so there is really no point. Also, I don't live with with my folks during the year. I'm also going to be graduating law school soon, so hopefully I'll be able to make some upgrades of my own in the near future, although it will be some time before I plunk down the kind of cash involved in buying a DCS stack ;)

Just to be clear, the Delius is the DAC, and the Purcell is a separate upsampler. You can use the Purcell with any DAC that can handle DSD (SACD), or 24/96 or whatever.

As for the Squeezebox, it is awesome. After we tried it with our setup we sold our high-end CD transport. The CD transport was slightly better but the convenience of the squeezebox offset the difference. My understanding is that if you aren't using the DAC on the squeezebox, (we sure don't) it really doesn't matter if you are using Squeezebox or Sonos or whatever, as it is just a means of transmitting the music files to your DAC, or in our case, to the Purcell upsampler and then to the DAC. In other words, we just use the digital out on the Squeezebox. I don't even know what the squeezebox DAC sounds like. Sonos has a fancier interface but I doubt there is much difference in sound quality if you are just using the digital out.

In some ways, the Squeezebox sounds better because using the Wi-Fi eliminates the mechanical noise associated with a moving CD transport. Wi-Fi audio is definitely the future.

I agree.. I think it's all interface that's the main difference between the Sonos and the SB3.... probably not much else in the sonic realm.

With regards to wifi being the future... I agree.. music servers are definitely the next big thing.

You gotta try the SB3's DAC and compare it to the Delius stack.... and let me know how it sounds... or have your dad do it.

How much is the stack anyway and is it still currently produced?

What are you listening to with those $12k speakers? Not Snoop Dogg I hope.:D

Are you referring to me?

If so, I listen to a myriad of music... very eclectic. That said, however, I gravitate towards several types of genres. I like music like The Fray/Jason Mraz/John Mayer/Dave Matthews Band/Alexi Murdoch, and I also like the legends like U2/Coldplay/Rolling Stones/Steely Dan, but I also dabble in with some of the better female vocalists like Diana Krall/Norah Jones. But, I also have several of the new popular stuff, like Justin Timberlake/Omarion/Pretty Ricky/Fergie/Beyonce/Nelly Furtado.... and of course, I play Kanye/Snoop/JayZ/Diddy through my speakers. Then again, I also listen to classics like Frank Sinatra/BB King/Eric Clapton/Johnny Cash and great songs from Extreme and definitely play a LOT of original movie soundtracks like those from Crouching Tiger/Pearl Harbor/Family Man/Elf/Star Wars....

I guess the stuff I really dont listen to are like the popular rock/punk/metal stuff...

It's amazing how good everything sounds! Even listening to something like James Blunt becomes a quasi-religious experience... my friend actually got choked-up when he heard a song that reminded him of his ex.

Pretty funky. ;)

Not to mention playing AIM beeps and alarms through it, playing games like HL2 wpsiode 1, Doom3 expansion, FEAR from the PC, and also GOW and Lost Planet from the Xbox360...

The speakers do not discriminate. :)

What, no P-Funk!?;)

I bet those are the best AIM bleeps you've ever heard!

Well, technically, the "Stack" as it is referred to in Audiophile press is a stack of three components, the DCS transport, the DCS Elgar DAC (even better than Delius) and the Purcell Upsampler.

The Delius DAC, I believe, is like $7k, and the Purcell Upsampler is like around $5k. The thing about the Delius is that it is functions as both a DAC and Preamp--it goes straight into your amplifier you don't need a preamp. If you want the better Elgar DAC, that is more like $12k. My dad bought demo units or used units, I'm not sure which.

There is also an all in one SACD/CD transport, DAC and upsampler unit called the P8i. I'm not sure but that is like $12-14k. Not quite as good as a stack w/ Delius or Elgar but it is pretty good.

No Judas Priest? :(

I think this system will do nicely with Crysis, Unreal Tournament 3, and Half Life2: Episode2, dontcha think?

Great speaker for chorus.
I remember listening to a chorus called "the mass" through 800.
It was just sick.
They should play those games like they are real. :D

Whatever I want, of course! :p But when it comes to hip hop, I prefer the Beastie Boys.

My preference is usually rock and electronic music, but my collection ranges from Johnny Cash to Miles Davis to From Autumn To Ashes to Yo Yo Ma (bought the last two at the same time... record store clerk must have thought I was weird). My all time top five desert island albums are (in no particular order) Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream, Future Sound of London - Lifeforms, My Bloody Valentine - Loveless, Tool - Aenima, and Radiohead - Kid A. Lately I've been listening to a lot of Pink Floyd, Roger Waters, Pavement, Neutral Milk Hotel, Juno Reactor, Bjork, Sigur Ros, The Album Leaf (I seem to be in an Icelandic phase), early Modest Mouse, Badly Drawn Boy, Frou Frou, and Iron and Wine. I have all of my music on this computer, which is fed digitally into the system. It spends most of its day on random as background music, but I almost always play the actual CDs when I sit down to listen. I'm thinking about getting a Sonos setup, so depending on its sound quality that may change.

Forgot to add... I listen to the inimitable Miles Davis, cant forget a legend. ;)

Yes, but so is George Clinton;) "Maggot Brain" was recorded for speakers like those Martins. Find a Copy to see what I mean? GC and Funkadelic has been Sampled on more Rap performances than the next two combined. Wayyyy ahead of their time in the 70's.

Danmagicman,

Nice Axiom system! It's interesting that I've had a lot of what you guys have now... great minds think alike!

Here was my Axiom Dorm Theater before... notice the similarities? Yup, that's the mighty Axiom M22ti! Perhaps my first real hifi speaker.

Hey I wanted to comment on how cool your PC looks in those pics. What is that green screen in the front drive bay, is that related to the liquid cooling system? Also, I like the case. Was that case designed to accept that cooling unit sitting on top or did you have to mod it? Very sexy case.

I just got those same speakers from Logitech, I looove them...though personally I cant stand them that close, I need like 10 ft between each so im immersed lol

I made that PC myself and I modded the case from the stock Lian Li PC60 shell... all aluminum and yadda yadda... couldve talked up a storm about it back in the day about 4 years back. Now, I havent touched my PC, but have been busy with school and audio.

:)

I think audio's a funner hobby anyway, the problem with PC is that they get old and obsolete, regardless of how much you spend initially and how well you research the parts. With audio, once you find something that sounds good, it usually sounds good regardless of age.

Here's a closer pic of the PC, back when it was new and the watercooling kit I put together was clean as a whistle!

What is that green window in front? Is that related to the water cooling? It looks pretty neat. I'd call the color scheme...watermellon! Are those nobs on top for a fan controller? Computers have sort of eaten a way at my audio hobby. I can't afford the audio stuff while I'm in school. :)

Black,

You pretty much answered everything with your questions. The front green thing is a reservoir (double 5.25" bay) for the green fluid. The knobs are for all the controllers. On top of the PC, you will see a radiator (Black Ice Xtreme 2) and dual 120mm fans with mesh filters. The whole thing is cool as heck (tempwise and build/design)... and the more I talk about it, the more I want to get back into the PC scene...

;)

Same lame one I posted in the setup thread (yeah I will have to take some new ones when I get home from work).

4Infinity Interlude IL-10 speakers (the other two are in the back), Sony STR-DE445 receiver, the black box in the floor is a Polk PSW202 sub, and the silver headphones over the monitor are Sennheiser HD 497s. The silver speaker you see on the TV isn't part of my computer audio at all, it just happens to be in the shot. Its part of a Onkyo HT-S8230 system for my TV.

EDIT: The smaller silver headset above the monitor is some USB Logitech one I use just for the mic. I have no idea what the model is or anything.

xnikx, the point of having a 5.1 speaker is to get a surround sound, not just to double the amount of front speaker, you will get a better sound experience if you place them properly.

Mordaunt Short 908 Fronts
Mordaunt Short 905 centre
Mordaunt Short 903 rears.

Centre and rear not in pic as they arnt connected up yet :)

OCer,
Nice system! :)

How does it sound? I assume you're pretty picky about your audio quality...

A small impressions/review post would be cool about those Mordaunt speakers...

I'm in the process of tweaking the system and installing my centre and rears right now. I'll post a write up as soon as i'm done.

But i do have to say that the 10" sidefiring subwoofers are damn powerful ;)

Hey what is the make and model of your computer case? I like it.

if it's piano black.. I am gonna guess it's a Cooler Master ATC201B.

good luck finding one though... I have wanted to get another one but can't find them anywhere. You could get an older Praetorian.. but it's not piano black.

Insignia speakers I picked up from Best Buy a few weeks ago for $50 and a 7.1 Onkyo A/V receiver I bought from Craig's list today for $95. Not a bad setup for $145. I could even hook up my Xbox 360 and Wii to a monitor like the 2407FPW if I decide to pick one up. :D

Cool!

Similar to what I did, I hooked up my 360 to my 2405... good stuff!

changed the cables on my xfi's from 18 gauge to 16 gauge.

i can say it made a big difference.
