Exploitation allows an attacker to execute arbitrary code within the context of the kernel.

I used to run Zone Alarm on all of my PCs at home, but with the most recent update I recieved a warming message stating that to continue with the update, I'd first need to uninstall my anti-virus software. Excuse me? Turns out the latest version includes anti-virus, even though it may not be active because you haven't registered it, but it's there anyway for upsell potential. After I saw that I said good-bye to Zone Alarm, uninstalled it from all of my machines.
