Well,my son bought a 9600 Pro from ZZF last week cause he had credit to use up. Got the card Wednesday and yesterday it took a shit. I gave them a call today and they said send it back,no problem. I asked them if we could get something else instead and what would be something close thats pretty good. The guy said to try one of these, no difference in price.....

So, I agreed and shipped back the 9600 Pro this afternoon. I looked at that 9550 and what im wondering is did we get a better card? From the Abit site it has BGA ram, and the Pro we just shipped back had TSOP ram. Should be a better card right? Cant find too many reviews, but the one I did see said it was a good card. What do you think?Thanks.
 
I'm pretty sure the 9600 pro was faster, but I don't know much about that 9550xt?
 
that is much nicer cuz u can oc it just by changin the jumper on the card. this is high chance for it to beat 9600 pro alone. :D
 
the 9550 and 9600 have the same core, its just that the 9550 is clocked a little slower. It's pretty well known that 9550s can be overclocked to 9600pro speeds with relative ease. They are pretty much the same card. I personally am running on a 9600 non-pro, and I can overclock to very near 9600pro speeds. A 9550 should outperform me.

The difference between BGA and TSOP memory is neglible.

The 9550 should be a good introduction to tweaking/overclocking for your son, a trade that he'll eventually learn anyway if he ever becomes interested in computers.

How much are these cards youre getting? There are more reputable companies making 9600's and 9550's for pretty good prices.

I've had good experiences with sapphire cards.
 
I am pretty sure it is slower it uses weak mem, and has lower clocks than even my 9500 pro (275/275) opposed to 250/xx, with same RAM and lower bit-bus (128bit) compared to 256 bit
 
The 9550 outperforms a 9500, i would think. the 9550 is an underclocked 9600 while the 9500 is from the previous cycle, with the 9000/9500/9700 cards as opposed to the 9550's 9200/9600/9800

If the 9550 and 9500 are both overclocked, the 9550 would run circles around the 9500

We had credit at ZZF we had to use up. I think the card cost 70 something(9600 Pro), but I just looked at their site. They are gonna give us the 9550XT which cost 88. I hope its not too much difference in performace. I cant find anything review wise....in english anyhow.

pfffft no. He was talking about a 9500 pro which has 8 pipes. The 9550 and 9600's only have 4 pipes. That's what was odd about ati's cycle: The 9600 pro was slower than the 9500 pro. The 9500 pro was a beast of a mainstream card (same as a 9700np, just with half the mem bandwidth) and encroached even on their high-end cards.

personally, I think you got screwed there man...abit's site says it runs a 250mhz core, which is pathetic for a 4-pipe card like that. The 9600pro has a 400mhz core, and the 9600xt has a 500mhz core. Overclocking may help but it's still a little ridiculous that you went from 400mhz to 250mhz on the same core.
 
Ok,just looked in Abit Forum. Theres a jumper onboard,in normal mode its a 9550. In turbo mode its shows as 9600XT. Maybe I didnt get screwed. Im gonna keep looking.

Ok read a thread on XtremeSystems and one guy said the 9550xt has 2.5ns ram...if thats so I didnt get screwed.....lol

OK,another forum says 3.3ns ram.....guess ill have to wait and see. My son might not get a chance to play with it first....lol.

As Eva_unit said, No. The 9500pro was a 9700 with a 128 bit bus. It was a monster of a medium range card, and ones that overclocked well were just outrageous performers for the price. No 9600 could touch one, let alone a 9550.

OK, Fedex man just dropped off the Abit 9550XT. Threw it in the pc and opened Everest. Under GPU it shows R9600XT Turbo, core is RV360. GPU clock 300, mem. 250. Im gonna open vguru and see what it can do here quick. From the looks of it, its going to be better than the old 9600 Pro it is replacing. Be back in little bit.
 
Ok, opened vguru and set core to 400,mem to 300. ran ATITool for 5 minutes no artifacts. How long should I runt the artifact tester? So far im happy. With the jumper in normal mode its 250,250. In turbo mode its 300,250. And with it at 400,300 the temp still isnt going higher. What should I shoot for next?
 
play some games with it...see if you like the performance, if so, be done iwth it :p
 
I said screw it and maxed the vguru on the core at 480, the mem is at 370 now....no artifacts or lockups yet.
 
Thanx, im happy so far. Id say i got the better deal. Testing it on my sons old athlon 1600, ECS K7S5A with 512 PC2100. Ran 3DMARK05 and got 1448......lol. Lowered the memory to 350 and set the core to 500 and its still running good, vguru is showing 42C temp. Id say theres more in it yet.

Ok got 3784 on 3dmark03...pretty happy with that.
