ZFS Storage server questions/advice

This is my first big storage system build, and I’d like some advice and input before I start setting up everything. I’ve been doing research and buying some stuff on and off over the past couple months. Changed my plans a couple times, sold a bunch of stuff, etc. So now I’d like to have a firm plan before I buy everything else! I’m setting up two systems: a main storage server and a HTPC. I have grouped them into one thread because I intend for them to be fairly interconnected, as I’ll discuss later.

Some background on me: I’ve used Windows for many years, have been using Mac for the past five years, and have some decent Linux experience. I am by no means a Linux expert, but not a newcomer either. I don’t have much experience with Unix, but am of course willing to put in the time to learn whatever is necessary.

OK, so now on to the build and questions I’ve got.



SERVER:
This will primarily be a storage server. I would like to store all my music (over 2TB flac), pictures, data, time machine backups, and videos on there. I am going to start doing a lot of Blu-Ray rips, so those will take up a good deal of space to. I sometimes do work in MatLab, Python, and R, so I might send some jobs to the server to complete. But the vast majority of the time, this will function as a data/media storage server.

1.) Case: I have decided I need a full tower consumer case. I thought about server cases like the Norco, but I need the case to be as quiet as possible (I don’t have a server closet). I don’t need it be super pretty, but I need it to look acceptable tucked away in the corner of say, a living room. Thus, I think the Fractal Design Define XL seems appropriate. 10 drive bays, then I will add a 4-in-3 module to expand the capacity to 14 3.5” drive bays and one DVD drive. Seem like a reasonable pick?

2.) OS: I have not fully decided on this one yet. I’ve been flip flopping between FreeBSD and OpenIndiana. I know I want to have ZFS, so I suppose Nexenta is another option. I haven’t seen any general consensus on which of the two (OI or FBSD) is better, they’re more different flavors? Would there be any compelling reason to pick one over the other? I tried OI 151a a little while back, and some parts seemed rather buggy to me. I have never tried to use FreeBSD before, but I thought about giving a try with the KDE version (I will use a lot of CLI, but the GUI is nice option to have too). Also, the support group behind FreeBSD seems much larger. When I tried OI, I couldn’t even figure out how to do a successful install to a USB key! Then I couldn’t figure out how to set it up to auto login upon system boot, etc.

3.)Processor: I have decided on either the Xeon E3 or E5 series. The main deciding factor will be how much ram is necessary. In the end, I am looking to have 16TB of usable space. Would 16GB of ram be enough? I am inclined to say that 16 is enough, and I should go with the Xeon E3-1230v2. If I will need more than 16gb, I will probably opt for an E5-1620. It is significantly more expensive, and draws more power, but 8GB ECC UDIMM are insanely expensive (if I can even find one).

4.)Motherboard: I haven’t decided on a specific model, but I am going to go with a SuperMicro, most likely. I have kind of put off deciding which precise model until I decide on a processor.

5.)Ram: 16GB Kingston UDIMM with the E3, or somewhere between 32 to 64 GB with the E5

6.)HDD: I am going to start off with 6x2TB drives in a RAIDZ2 config. Later I will add another identical pool to bring the storage to 16TB total. I have been buying HDDs whenever I see them on sale, so they are different manufacturers (I have some Seagate and WD right now). I am assuming this won’t matter that much? Ideally they’d all be 7200RPM drives, but I don’t think I need that because this will be primarily a media and data storage server and speed won’t be much of an issue.

7.)PSU: I currently have both an Antec Platinum 550W and a Seasonic Bronze 650W. I know Seasonic typically has a better reputation, but I am inclined to use the Platinum one instead for a 24/7 server. Any input?

8.)CPU cooler: I was thinking about picking up a Noctua, but haven’t made up my mind yet. Any suggestions? I won’t be doing anything super processor intensive, but I want to keep the processor as cool as possible, and be quiet at the same time.

9.)SATA cards: I think most, if not all the motherboards come with around 6+ sata ports. I have two RocketRaid 4-port PCIex4 cards that I was planning on using in JBOD mode, so I should have at least 14 SATA ports



HTPC:
Pretty much self-explanatory, however I was thinking about putting a small drive pool in this one to back up important files off the main server.

1.)Case: I have a Moneual Moncaso 932B I am going to use. It is fairly large, but it’s an awesome case. Has room for 4 3.5” drives. My OS will be on a SSD, so I’m sure I can find somewhere to Velcro it down.

2.)OS: Currently just windows 7. However, I have considered making this an ESXi server with windows 7 and either OI or FreeBSD with a small pool to serve as a backup for the main server

3.)Processor: I would love to have ECC on all my systems, but it’s not necessary on the HTPC. I was going to go with an ivy bridge i5, but if I’m going to be backing up my critical data on here, I re-thought the ECC issue. Anyone think ECC will be necessary in this case? If so, I will likely have to get either a Xeon or an AMD.

4.)GPU: This is another reason I wanted the ivy bridge. The iGPU should have been enough for this. The most intensive thing I would do is 3D blu-ray playback. However, if I end up wanting ECC, I’ll have to go with a Xeon or AMD, in which case I might have to get a discrete GPU.

5.)HDD: I have 4x1.5TB drives I was thinking about putting in here in a RAIDZ1 config.



Misc thoughts/questions:
1.)What do you guys think about having my HTPC serve as a backup for the server? I know I need some type of backup just in case the server goes up in flames or something like that. I know it should ideally be off-site, but I don’t have that capability at the moment. I considered a tape drive backup and storing the tapes in a fire/flood proof safe, but there’s got to be a better and more robust solution.

2.)If using HTPC as a backup drive, should I go the hypervisor route and install both windows and OI/FBSD? Im thinking that would be the best route so I can have ZFS on there too, I just don’t know how well ESXi would play in a HTPC role. The main issue I foresee is the PCI passthrough. I would need to pass through a bunch of tuner cards, and the GPU. If I was using the integrated HD4000 graphics, is that even possible to pass through to Windows through ESXi?

3.)I have also played around with the idea of virtualizing my main server via ESXi. Then I could play around with some routing and firewalls, media server OS, etc. However, I had bad experiences with XCP when I tried it. It was a royal PIA to even get OpenIndiana installed and running in the first place. Then the PCI passthrough was a nightmare and I gave up on it. Is ESXi easier? The other issue is that I remember reading ESXi will increase the power draw, even at idle with only one OS running. This is something I don’t want… I want the server to be as low power consumption as possible if it’s going to be on 24/7.

4.)HDD spin up/spin down (feel like I’m talking about electrons here). Are there options within FreeBSD or OI about whether or not to spin the HDDs down when not in use? I’m not sure the benefits/risks associated with this. It would probably save a little bit of power, but I’m also worried about the wear and tear on the drives from starting and stopping the platters so many times. Another option would be to include a sizable SSD cache, and have the HDDs set to spin down when not in use. Hopefully the SSD cache would really reduce the number of times the HDDs would have to spin up?

I am building something similar. But I will use thin clients SunRay (20USD on Ebay) so I will only have one PC, and get rid of all hardware. And an laptop. That's it.

I am going to use Ivy Bridge Xeon 1230v2 with 32GB RAM. This cpu can drive 20 SunRay clients doing heavy Office work. So I will put my PC in the basement, and have 4watt SunRay clients in each room.

I am not going for a SuperMicro mobo, because I will use the newest recently released C216 chipset which means ASUS mobo P8C WS. Supermicro have a C216 chipset mobo, but it is form factor UIO, I want an ordinary ATX, not propietary stuff.

Thus, I will build a high end workstation with Xeon and ECC. I am not building a server.


Regarding your HTPC, how about using the brand new Raspberry PI as a HTPC? It is $30 and can run 1080p in XBMC. The size of a credit card. Just stuck it to the back of your TV and you are done.
 
What OS are you going to be using? I still can't decide between OI and FreeBSD. I think I will end up going with FreeBSD though. I think the newest edition has the same ZFS version as OpenIndiana does.

Does anyone know how much more power is used at idle when ESXi is installed vs. just straight operating system? I am now thinking I would like to do an ESXi system with pfSense and FreeBSD. I currently have DD-WRT Netgear router, and once in a blue moon it does require a restart. I'd like to change that, and I like all the extra options pfSense provides.

How much is that 32GB going to cost you? Last I checked, 8GB UDIMMs were insanely expensive if you want ECC.

Anyone have any idea how power consumption compares between a Xeon E5-2620 and E3-1230v2? I know the E5 has a TDP of 95W, and the E3 a TDP of 69W, but is there still a significant difference at idle?

What's the reason for needing C216 as opposed to C204 (I think that's the last one) on the Supermicro mobos? I considered going the Asus WS route, but I'm not sure Asus has a good track record in the server motherboard department. They make great desktop motherboards, but I've read many bad reviews on Newegg and such. I know Newegg doesn't necessarily have the most accurate reviews, but they do give some indication of the quality.

I actually almost went with a super small form factor design for the HTPC. But, I don't think that would meet my needs. I want a full size motherboard so I can put in multiple tuner cards (maybe buy a Ceton in the future). I'm also moving towards the idea of virtualizing that system and having a second OS serve as a backup solution for the main server. It would prevent me from having to build yet another system as a backup server. Anyone think this is not a good idea?

Now, the only thing I have to decide is whether I should opt for ECC on the HTPC if I'm going to be using it as a backup solution as well. I'm also wondering if I should even try with ESXi on the HTPC, or just have Windows and FreeBSD in a Grub menu.
 
I will be using Solaris. ZFS is coming from Solaris. Also, the SunRay thin clients run on Solaris, they work great. I am using VirtualBox to startup Windows on SunRay. Fanless, silent.

32GB is going to cost me some, yes. Maybe I will begin with 16GB and later increase to 32GB

Xeon 2620 vs 1230v2 power consumption: in idle mode they all use the same; very little power. They can not draw less, everything is shut down in the cpu. In idle mode, they draw something like 10Watt or so. When doing heavy work, there is a difference. In general 22nm draws less. But in idle there can hardly be any improvements. Now I am talking about the cpu, the entire pc can improve because it has a northbridge etc that can draw less power. But cpu wise, they can not draw much less than today. Sandybridge and Ivybridge draws the same in idle mode, but under full load - there is a noticeable difference, Ivy Bridge uses less.

C216 is the new chipset just released. C204 is the older one. ASUS P8C WS will use the C216 but ASUS might have trouble utilizing ECC, look into my thread where I talk about it:

Small form factor will not do for me. I will use IBM M1015 card for connecting all my disks. And use different stuff. I will use my PC as a high end Desktop Workstation. Can not do high end workstation stuff with a small form factor.

I have always thought thin clients were really cool! I don't really have a use for them though, because I don't have any other desktops around my house to replace with a thin client.

Yeah, I think I have settled on 16GB ram in an E3 processor. The LGA2011 platform seems so awesome, but I just don't think I'd see enough benefit from 32-64gb ram to warrant the additional cost. I think it would be about an extra $200-$300 for a basic processor/single processor MB for LGA2011 over 1155.

I don't think I'd see any benefit from C216 in my use. This will be exclusively a server/routing computer for me. I might send some scripting jobs to complete on it, but mostly just data server and router. I'd probably snag a C216 if they weren't much extra money, and SM made an ATX version, but I don't see that happening for a little while.

Sorry, I was probably too ambiguous earlier. I never considered small form factor for the server, just for the HTPC. I can't use the Raspberry Pi for the HTPC because I want a full size board so I can fill it up with TV tuners etc. I also want to be able to play 3D blu ray, which I'm not sure the Raspberry Pi can do. The RP is definitely something I could consider for some other TVs around the house, though!

I think I might actually move toward an AMD setup for the HTPC. I decided that if I am going to do any server backups on the HTPC, I should have ECC in it. After putting all the effort into maximizing the data integrity on the server, I can't risk having the backup corrupted with no ECC. I know it's probably overkill, but it's for my peace of mind. I already have an FX4100 and an M5A99X-EVO, which should support ECC just fine (love that about AMD!). I ideally really wanted an APU so I wouldn't have to buy a separate graphics card, but from everything I've read the llano platform does NOT support ECC. I am assuming Trinity will not support it either, leaving my only option either another Xeon or the FX4100. I want to shy away from Xeon for HTPC use because the SuperMicro motherboards apparently take a long time to POST. I want basically instant on with the HTPC.

Now, I guess the only other thing I've got decide is whether to have Win7 and FreeBSD be bare metal OS, or virtualized via ESXi. I think the most promising option is just a simple dual boot, and set the FreeBSD install to boot up on a schedule to do a backup. Success with GPU passthrough seems very limited on ESXi.
 
Well, I finished building the HTPC system last night. Was able to fit 4x1.5TB drives into the case, but it was a royal PIA. The Moneual case looks beautiful but is a bloody pain to work with. The layout of the drive cages etc is very poor. If I ever have to replace anything, it will be a long ordeal. Just replacing the DVD drive will take about 1 hour I think.

I am thus changing my plans yet again. I'm going to save the HTPC for exclusively HTPC use. I'm going to then build a third system as exclusively a backup solution. Here are my thoughts:

Small case, room for 4 or 5 drives. mATX board (I have a Phenom II x4 and Asus M5a79L-M I think I will use, which I think supports ECC!). I'll try to have this system boot FreeBSD from a usb drive, and setup a RAIDZ1 or Z2 array and perform backups once every couple days of the important stuff on the main server.

Now, here's where things get tricky. I want to have this system in some kind of a fire-proof safe/enclosure. If my apartment goes up in flames, no amount of backup servers will help. The best thing I can come up with at the moment is getting a cheap Sentry safe to put the small backup server in, then take it out maybe once a week to run a quick backup. This is doable, however I would MUCH prefer a totally autonomous system that is able to boot itself up every couple days, perform a backup, and shut down. I don't really know if this would be possible and retain the fire-proofing. I don't want to try drilling a hole in a safe for power/ethernet because I think that would ruin the fire-proofing (not to mention my drill). Even if I did that, I'd be worried about heat within the safe. Anyone have any ideas? I know off-site backup is ideal, but I don't have that option at the moment.
 
Instead of a safe, maybe it could work if you placed your backup server at a relatives house and did backup over internet? Use "zfs send | receive" which only sends the changes.

If there is a fire, or an earthquake, or whatever, a safe might not help. But place your backup at another house is better than a safe.
