I know there are similar threads around, but before buying 5k€ worth of gear, I have to at least make my own
What I have:
- 2 PCs, 2 notebooks (soon also 3 htpc's and 3-4 IP cameras)
- qnap 219P II
- 4 samsung f4 2tb, 12 samsung f2 1.5tb (2 of them in qnap)
What I need:
- centralised storage for all the devices
- about +4tb for 24/7 use
- windows server (probably gonna wait for 2012) for http/ftp and several other services
- at least 1gbit speed
So I was thinking about this hardware:
- 4U Server Case w/ 24 Hot-Swappable SATA/SAS Drive Bay, RPC-4224
- Sea Sonic Platinum Series 860W ATX 2.3 (SS-860XP) (semi-passiv)
- SUPERMICRO X9DRH-7F SAS
- 4x Kingston ValueRAM DIMM 8GB PC3L-10667R reg ECC CL9 (DDR3L-1333)
- Intel Xeon E5-2620, 6x 2.00GHz, Socket-2011, boxed (BX80621E52620)
- 2x IBM ServeRAID M1015
- 2x Samsung SSD 830 Series 256GB, 2.5", SATA 6Gb/s
- 10x Western Digital Red 3000GB, SATA 6Gb/s (WD30EFRX)
ESXi boot on USB thumb, everything else (VMs) on SSD RAID1 (via integrated LSI RAID). Could also add 2 more in the future to create RAID10. Are these samsung's ok for it?
Next, two IBMs and onboard sata controller passthrough to OI & napp-it to form a zfs array. I was thinking two raid2z with 10 samsung's f2 and 10 wd red's. These will not be in use a lot and almost only for read (large files & streaming).
The 4 f4's on the other hand will be in use 24/7 (backup for the (ht)pc's, ftp, torrent, IP surveillance etc. Also need it to be as fast as possible, so I was thinking to create a stripe mirror. They will be probably upgraded first as soon as wd/seagate comes with 3tb (1tb platter) 7200rpm drive that is speced for 24/7 operation.
Qnap will be use to store a backup of the VMs and critical stuff from this pool.
I know the motherboard is overkill (won't be using more that 1 cpu) but its cheaper than the single socket 2011 board + lsi 9265 controller.
I will have a UPS so sync write will be of because I want 1gbit speed. Don't consider ZIL and L2ARC at this point, I can however buy 32gb more ram if it helps in any way.
All the pc's have one ssd only, but I'm considering of using iscsi boot for the 3 htpc's so I don't have to buy a small SSD for all as they just need to run xmbc.
If there is anything else I need to consider or you have advice/suggestion, please do tell. Thanks
