I'm planning on moving my OpenSolaris based ZFS box to FreeBSD and I want to keep my 6 disk raidz2 array intact during the move. I've confirmed that the pool format, 14, is supported by FreeBSD. I did a very quick dry run in VirtualBox exporting an array from OpenSolaris and importing it into FreeBSD and the data came out fine. Now I'm just trying to run through anything that could go wrong. I do have OpenSolaris booting off of a mirrored array of 2 other drives right now so I should be able to keep one of those around until I'm sure things are working.

The vast majority of data is either backups of things that exist on other hard disks at my place or backups of media that I have the originals laying around. The rest I'll make sure is replicated before I attempt this, so having to rebuild everything wouldn't be the end of the world but I'd still really like to avoid it :)

Has anybody got pointers for me? Has anyone here done a move like this before? It seems like it shouldn't be a big deal, but I'm also thinking that this is too easy. ZFS must be tricking me somehow :D Thanks.

I went from Nexenta to Solaris 11 with no issues. New OS saw the ZFS volume, and for a week I kept the Nexenta version of ZFS going. I then upgraded to the latest pool version, and its been solid ever since.

But he's talking about moving the pool to freebsd, which is a totally different code base.

Ahh, read it backwards. Personally I wouldn't trust a pool going from Sun to FreeBSD, but if you don't have any complexity in your setup, it should work out ok.

I believe when I went from freeNAS to opensolaris I kept the same pool, but that was a while ago and I can't remember the steps I took for it.

As long as you have a backup of all your data (which you should since ZFS itself isn't a backup), nothing to really lose.

I'm just more comfortable with FreeBSD. I moved to OpenSolaris just for ZFS. There's no reason I need to switch, it's just preference.

I'm not doing anything crazy with it so I sounds like I'll be ok.
