Hey I am modding my shuttle fairly soon so I should be able to fit either one of these on my x800xt without any trouble. What I was wondering is, is there a big difference between the Zalman video card coolers and the ATI Silencer? I kind of like the way the Zalman looks more but if it is not going to allow me to overclock as well as the Silencer than I would prefer not to get it. Anyone know how these compare to one another?

Zalman vs Silencer

I've never used the Zalman, but I would think that the ATI Silencer will improve not just your gpu temps but you sys and cpu temps, ( It did mine, anyway) because it blows air from the GPU outside the case. It lowered my ambient and cpu temps 4-5c each. And it works great for the GPU also, lowering from 39c idle to 31c and 55c load to 45c.
I do have the Zalman 7000 CU cpu cooler though, and that works great.

I can't put a CPU cooler on my processor cuz shuttle have the ICE cooling system thing or else I defly would get a zalman for that. About the ATI Silencer....does it need an extra PCI slot next to it to blow the air out or what? Cuz in shuttles the AGP slot is right next to the wall which is why I am modding my case, I am putting an acrylic window on the side and then cutting a hole in it so that the GPU fan will blow out the hole and not into the side of the case. So if the ATI Silencer needs and extra slot to blow air out the back of my PC then I have to get the zalman.
yes it does require an extra slot, but I don't know which way the graphics card fits in the shuttle, so I didn't know if you could use it or not...if the cooler would be to the inside you could use it. but I don't know...I'm sure somebody here does.

unfortunatly the graphics card points towards the wall so I guess that would mean the the Silencer would be right up against it? I was also looking at some pictures and the zalman does not have the exhaust type thing that the silencer has but zalman does make either a fan GPU cooler or one big heatsink for the GPU. Does anyone know which one performs better?
The Zalman Heatpipe cooler also requires an open slot next to it as well. I have the single heatpipe version of the cooler on my 9800pro with the XT bios and it keeps the card at 55 deg. Either of these coolers are going to protrude out of the case though in your application.
If you're planning to OC your card then you'll need the optional fan on the Zalman. Putting the fan takes the space of TWO pci slots since its an 80mm fan mounted on the edge of one of the heatsinks at a 90 degree angle. So that narrows down your choice.
I got the Zalman 80 D with 2 heatpipes
and it works well. I also considered the Silencer...but it was close to the Zalman price the model i wanted. So i stuck with the Zalman.
However in my next rig..i'll defintely try the Silencer. =D

the fan is on the very far edge, isnt it? majority of PCI cards will still fit in the slots, wont they? the fans very slim, too. i wouldnt think that it would affect much.

If it was for a atx or matx case then yes, but the OP stated that he wanted to put this in a modifed SFF case, so it wouldn't fit very well at all.

o, sorry.... forgot that he mentioned he had a shuttle.
