I want to upgrade my current CPU. I have the Zalman 9500 already installed. If I remove the heatsink itself (not the mounting brackets) and replace the CPU and then reinstall the heatsink, is it possible to do this while still leaving it in the case? I seem to recall an excessive amount of force needed to get the screws down on the heatsink.

Just wanted to add one more question to this:

I am thinking of upgrading to the Zalman 9700. Does it use the same mounting as the 9500? That way I would also not have to remove the motherboard.

you should be able to do that. However, I found that with the mounting bracket installed the lever that holds the CPU down doesn't swing back far enough to let the cpu cover plate open, so you may have to take the mounting plate off the top anyways. Fortunetly, the back plate seems to stay connected for the most part, even when not screwed into the top mounting bit.

Done this four times now skudmunky. Once with the Zalman 9500 and the replacement Zalman 9700.

Even Zalman said you can use the same mounting hardware for both the 9500 or 9700 and that is what I did.

I removed the fan/heatsink carefully while of course the M/B still in the case, than I just removed the old cpu and installed a Q6600, real easy, just a little tight getting the cpu arm released. Made sure the thermal grease was applied occording to the directions for a quad core, than I used the same mounting bracket that the 9500 had now for the 9700. Kept the newer one as a back up.

Only be careful not to strip the two screws. ;)

I am worried about the size upgrade from the 9500->9700. Is it really worth it? Looking at the money and size.

Temps improved slightly going from the 9500 to the 9700 and had to play with the thermal grease to find the right amount and not go overboard for better cooling. Keep the 9500 with the correct application of the grease and check the temps. If the temps are in the normal range, I would not bother with another Zalman.

Size was not an issue for me. Both coolers was an easy install in my larger case and Mobo below from the 680i to the 780i.

for the price there are better alternatives to zalaman stuff. personally, I find them to be loud compared to other coolers.

OK, I think I am gonna upgrade to the 9700.

First, in an Antec 900 case, should I aim this toward the back 120mm fan or the top 200mm fan? I personally think it looks better aiming towards the 120mm because then you can see the LCD in the side window.

Second, will this huge heatsink fit inside the Antec 900 with the side fan installed and not block the airflow if it does fit? The side fan has helped keep my 8800gt in the 40s most of the time.

Well, I may have changed my mind on the Zalman. I am considering going with a completely different cooler all together.

What would be the best heat sink that would fit in an Antec 900 AND allow the side fan to be installed without modification?

I really would like the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme, but I don't know how big it is.

i have both, and the mounting hardware is the same. also the mounting bracket has a notch so the retaining arm will open all the way.
