zalman 9500 temps

I have an IHS-less opteron 146 at 2.6ghz and a zalman 9500 cooler at full speed. when i check the contact with the core the thermal paste is very thin where the core is and you can see it has been squeezed out by the contact. now i would assume this means my cooler has good contact with the core, is this correct? however and this is the problem, my temps at the moment are 35 idle and 48 load. this seems way too high for me at this clock speed and with this cooler.

now obviously the thermal paste hasn't had chance to settle yet so this may be premature and the temps will all drop by 5-7 degrees, but i doubt it! anyway, my question is this. does it sound like my HSF is making good contact with the core, if yes why are my temps like that and how do i make them better?
if it indicates bad contact, how do i make it better?

i should point out that i have sanded down the socket mount (took off a chunk the same thickness as the ihs) i have also tried this with my case side on and off - temps same both times. my case fans are 1 vantec tornado and an akasa 80mm silent exhaust, 3 80mm akasa silent intakes at front bottom, and 1 vantec tornado over the zalman. my case is the raidmax cobra.

any help is much appreciated

thanks

Try laying the case on it's side, so the cooler can't rock, I'm under the impression that without the IHS, the clip that holds the cooler down doesn't have enough force to do it's job.

Usally with a IHS less A64, unless your using bolt through method its hard to tell if you are making good contact. You could try this. Put some AS5 on the core expoie the IHS back on only in the coner small dab and let it dry. I am betting you will see better temps :D

not quite sure what you mean vengance. Borgschulze my case is on its side for that very reason. i thought it might be airflow in my case but then surely the temps would at least me the same. maybe contact isn't as good as i think it is, should i shave another mm or so off the mount? the zalman 9500 is a bolt through mount.

You should be able to see if the cooler is touching the socket since you're running a K8 system.

I would triple check the socket.

im pretty sure that the heatsink makes no contact with the socket, but i'll make sure again

it makes very good contact with the core. can anyone help me get my temps down?

thanks

go get a thermal probe and put it so it is toudhing the core and get a second reading on your temps.

I have a mobo that reports that my temp is 70C but my probe that i have on the CPU tells me that it is only 40C. if it were really 70C i would not have a CPU anymore.

any recommendations? im guessing i'd need a thin one to fit between hsf and cpu.
dont put it actually in between the hsf and the core, that'd mess up the cooling as thered be a spot where theres the probe blocking contact between core/hsf. just put it next to the core as close as possible or something like that, but im sure other ppl have better suggestions :p

What is your case/MOBO temperature? Your CPU temperature isn't going to be any less.

case temp is 20 degrees and mobo temp is around 35 degrees. when i said between the hsf and cpu i didn't mean on the core, i meant next to it! i bought a "compunurse" so hopefully that'll tell me the temps are lower!!!

ok guys, i now have my temp probe and i have placed it as close to the core as possible (i.e. within a mm of the corner of the core) and that is reading atm 26.6 degrees, but speedfan says 35 degrees, also speedfan went up to 44 degrees but the probe said 31.4 degrees.

which one is correct? i'd like to think the probe - but should i take the average of both readings just for safetys sake?

this is a picture of the position of my probe - the top of the probe has the temp sensor on.

the sensor being used is the compunurse.

thanks guys
