im looking at a zalman 7000a-cu (the pure copper one)

question is, how good is it for overclocking?
setup is below, so im looking for a hsf that i can install without the removing the motherboard.

so my choices are:
zalman 7000a ($60CDN)
swiftech mcx 478-v ($75CDN)
thermalright slk-748u (price not set, bidding on this on ebay, approximately $30USD/$40CDN)

taking into consideration just the pure performance, which one should i go for?

keep in mind that i plan on using most likely a smartfan2 with the swiftech or the thermalright (~75cfm)

the overclock im hoping for is about a 3.2-3.4ghz or more (fsb of 250-260-265+)

I'm running my 2.6C overclocked to 3.2 with a Zalman 7000 alcu heatsink. It's extremely quiet with low temps.

I have one more for quiet (i run it usually around 2000 rpm instad of max +-2400) those last couple of hundred RPM make the most difference for sound but hardly any difference for temps

It is better then any other cooler i have had but the list is not very long. (btw its the AL-CU one i have, cheaper, lighter and theres hardly any difference)

recently i made ducts for the zalman and the vid card, and my temp went down 8DEGc! they get air directly from outside the case.

however i have airflow issues in my case due to it being full of crap and also being "side mounted" (rack mount)

as long as you have a motherboard thats proper ATX spec (see zalman site for ones that are not) and there is cool air for it to suck in, you should be happy.

btw its on a p4 2.4c @ 3.4. now its cooler i think i can kick it up a bit more (no load = 38c after bf1942 for 3 hours = 56c (was 64 before duct) not great temps but a tower will give better results for you.

i would definately go with the Zalman over those other options listed, the others are more expensive and would need a high CFM fan...meaning much much more noise

cool, thx for replies guys

i was really leaning towards the zalman anyway since the other ones would end up being +$20cdn for the fan and the zalman just looks so damn nice

zalman it is :)

wait wait wait
you're planning on getting the 7000"A"-Cu version?
the "A" after the 7000 is for Athlon XP's
u could save like a buck or two by not getting the 7000A-Cu, get the 7000-Cu

as u said earlier that u wanted 3.2 Ghz out of ur system im guessing that u have a P4 rite?

yes the Zalman "A" is also for P4's but ur paying an extra part for compatibility with the Athlon XP's
if u buy the Zalman "non-A" then ur saving urself a little bit of money by not having those extra two plastic pieces that are needed for an Athlon XP mobo

The zalman heatsink is incredible, it really keeps the load temps under control, you can see in my sig below, its very good at overclocking. My idle and load temps on the athlon are only 39/45
