i had to modify the mounting parts before it would fit my nFII, so i practiced mounting it on my dead one. it warps the board under the socket, and its hardly tightened at all. isnt this what backplates prevent? does Zalman make one and do i have to pay extra for it?

I may be misunderstanding what you're saying but - when I went to install my Zalman 7000 the supplied screws were too short. I contacted Zalman and apparently some of the 7000's that went out had shorter screws.
I was afraid to put that much pressure on my MOBO & I'm glad I didn't!

The supplied screw wouldn't even reach the bracket on mine. I bought 2 longer screws @ Lowe's.

the screws are fine. they reach ok, but tightening them down at all bends the mounts inward and bows the board out, quite visibly. cant be good.

Hmmm... I wonder about this too. My screws were very short... I bent the connectors to reach, and it didn't seem like the board was bending too much though. I may have to look at this when I get home.
