Wondering if anyone has tried WHS with one of the zacate boards yet and if you had any issues? Looking at getting one of them and swaping out the core2duo that i am running for WHS right now.

Thanks

I have been wondering, kinda going it does well enough to go in my whs and run sagetv

But it doesn't have onboard RAID if i'm correct, so Windows-based onboard RAIDs won't work on Zacate.

It does make a great low-power ZFS platform, though. For WHS you could just as well use old cheap hardware i guess. It's reading single disks anyway so bottlenecks are not that obvious.

Some people would prefer efficiency over hardware cost.

Well a RAID controller plus expander is going to consume more power than the Zacate motherboard+CPU+RAM in idle mode; a stripped down Zacate runs < 12W idle according to the Tech Report; one of my favorite reviewsites which tested with PicoPSU power supply.

But if you're going to add power hungry hardware to a power efficient machine; what do you get? An expensive piece of technology that still consumes a fair amount of power; it wouldn't be a low-power server anymore. Especially combining with 7200rpm drives, if there is no need for IOps performance.

So i would either change the objectives of his build, or change the hardware to suit the objectives. Right now they seem like an unmatched pair to me.

I have the ASRock Zacate board that I'm putting in the bench today. Going to be a bit different than the X8DTH-6F testbed I think :)

Would be great if you could add some power measurements, too! Especially with a stripped down configuration using PicoPSU. Perhaps test the difference between PicoPSU and a regular ATX power supply under such low loads. Would make a great article for your website!

Raid controler will not be needed at this point since i would be running the original version of WHS not Vail. I would be using drive extender. Just looking to drop my hydro bill a bit since i am going to start to be charged for it now where before i was not.

I always use the PicoPSU except for configs that pull way too much power (like the X8DTH-6F w/ dual Xeons and Phenom II X4 CPUs).

Going to finish off the E3-1280 review this afternoon, and hopefully 1-2 others for this week. Hoping to do the Zacate for Thursday.
