Z77 with raid 0? Good idea?

Just making sure it wasnt a bad idea.

With all the ssd deal I was going to get 2 x 256gb ssd and raid them for some performance.

Let me know what you guys think.

SSD RAID 0 does not really help real world performance that much. Your benchmark scores will double for large sequential reads and writes but not as much for random 4K reads and writes that dominate most applications.
 
it sounds cool, but i feel like it ends up being more work than its worth down the road. a single SSD feels so fast that RAID isn't useful unless you're doing big database work or something to that effect

so if trim still works, what could be so bad about having them in raid. I currently use regular hdds in raid and never had any problems.

Is there something about raiding ssd's that i'm missing??

Just want to make sure I dont put them in raid 0 and mess them up.

I've been running/enjoying RAID 0 on SSDs since they went mainstream in like '06/'07. I retired my Raptors back then and have owned probably 8 different sets of R0 SSDs and countless other singles on other boxes. No issues, ever. Just fast.
 
TRIM works if you use Intel RST 11.0 or newer. I run 11.2 on my Z77

I've got the same 2 Sammy's in Raid 0 on my box. I've also tried them individually. The average user won't notice any difference in performance.

But if you do any kind of heavy work then you definitely will notice. Things that involve lots of temp files, large databases, large ISO handling, archive extraction, audio/video remuxing, etc get a huge performance boost. The installation of programs is also significantly faster. Virtual Machines boot in seconds.

4k speeds don't change much, but most of the other specs do. Sequential doubles of course, but 512k nearly doubles, as well as 4k expanded queue depths, and overall IOPs just by having another disk to share the load.

I've gone back and forth a few times just for kicks. For the average person that just wants to put something fast in the their machine, be done with it, and not have to worry about it, then 1 disk is perfectly good. For the person that does or plans to do any kind of file handling whatsoever they will receive a benefit from RAID 0. Plus, 2x256GB disks are cheaper than a 512GB disk. When you look at it like that it's a no-brainer for a lot of us. Just always of course take snapshots here and there as backups, which people should be doing with single disks anyway, so in the whole aspect of worrying about data loss it really doesn't make a difference.

Personally, I say go for it bro ;)
