Hey,
I was wondering how the z-5500's would compare to a 2.1 insignia + dayton sub ?
I've heard very good things about both and I would much rather pay for the insignias if they are significantly better.

Also, I know the $150 onkyo reciever is very popular, but it lacks true hdmi. I was wondering if there were any other good recievers at the sub 200point that has true hdmi capabilities.

ive got z5500 now and i just bought some insignia's off online. so ill let you know how they compare when they get here. im assuming the quality will be higher, but they wont be as loud.

There's a lot of people here who have owned both, and who are more familiar with the Z-5500's than myself, but i can confirm that you're going to have better mids and highs with the insignia's. A dayton 10" sub will also be less rumbly and have less distortion than any logitech sub.

If i'm understanding you correctly, pretty sure the onkyo TX-SR605 is the lowest you can go before you start losing certain hdmi capabilities. There may be a Sony that costs a little less than the onkyo 605, i forget the model number, but the brand reputation isn't as good.

If you heard them both you'd easily figure out the wrong choice ;)

Negative ghostrider.

the 5500's lacks mids and treble....with onboard audio. Sound card fixes that.

OR, use them in conjunction with your HD cable box for your tv surround and you have the ultimate cheap surround sound setup.

Versatile speaker setup for great price.

I'll agree somewhat, and under certain circumstances i've even recommended them. But in the OP's case he seems willing to slowly piece his way into something better. In the future he can pick up a better set of fronts and center channel, he'll end up with a decent 5.1 system that way.

With a decent receiver to start out, this is the better choice in the long wrong. The Z-5500's are more versatile (multimedia) and don't require a receiver, though.

so are you guys saying that the z-5500's are comprable to the insignias?

one random thought popped in though, how much better are the x-ls encores by avs123? Does it justify the steep 300dollar price tag?

If you are willing to spend a little more, you might even look at some Polk Monitor 30s. I picked some up on the Polk Direct Ebay store and a Polk PSW10 for less than $200. I had been trying out the same speakers you had for a couple of months at work, and then I heard the Polks, which beat both, even in a 2.1 setup. I liked them so much, I decided to build a bedroom 7.1 setup using them. I think the main thing that converted me(I've wanted the Z-5500s for a while) was how well decent bookshelfs don't distort the sound. The Z-5500s are like my cheapo Sony bedroom setup that I'm replacing with a louder sub. The Insignias sound nice in comparison, but lack the receiver and surround sound. The Polks and a sub make you not care about surround.
