Z5500 Sub + Receiver

Unsatisfied with mid range output from my Z5500 system, I came up with an idea. Would it be possible for me to split my 5.1 signal to both the Z5500 and a separate receiver + speakers? Therefore, I would be using my home theater set up (which is superior to the Z5500) but using the sub from the Z5500. At the moment, I do not have money to buy a separate sub for the receiver. Does this sound like a good idea? Or just stupid?

i remember reading somewhere that you could possibly somehow use an rca to 3.5mm converter from sub pre-out of the receiver, plug it into the black 3.5mm of the z5500 control pod, and obviously have the control pod hooked up to the

to sum it up:
receiver subwoofer pre-out --> RCA cable --> 3.5mm converter --> z5500 control pod

Ummm, you could try it. As the other poster said, just feed the sub out to it and that should work. The main potential problem I see is just that the sub on that thing is a little weak compared to a normal HT sub so you may end up driving it too hard.

If you decide you like using the HT setup for your computer, what you might want to do s pack up your computer speakers and sell then and use the cash to get a cheap sub. You can get a JBL Sub 10 for $180 including shipping. It's not a great sub or anything, but not bad especially given the price.

What do you have now in the way of receiver and speakers that you want to use?

I have an Onkyo TX-SR504. I'm not sure the models my speakers are, but they are old bookshelf speakers that my father gave me. I plan to upgrade them later on, but for now, they serve me better than the Z5500's satellites.

Why not use the home theater speakers on the Logitech amp unit... I'm not sure how those speakers work but why can't you just use the sub and control center but just replace the sats with your other speakers. The amp in the Logitech should be more than capable of driving some other bookshelf or even smaller floor standing speakers? I don't see a reason to use the receiver.

Well, supposedly the Z5500 is designed only for those satellites/sub so it only sends 120Hz signals and up. Thus, even different speakers don't sound too well on it.

yes the 5500 sub is crossed over at 120hz and goes down to around 38hz on my ratshack spl meter. this setup will most likely sound better then the logi sats but not ideal. i did the same with my 680's until i bought my denon receiver and i did sound better to me.

if you are spent on using the 5500 sub the above advice will work.

This is my setup:

Creative X-Fi Elite Pro
Coxial-> Pioneer Reciever-> Floorstanding speakers
Optical->Logitech 5500Z (Subwoofer is the only speaker connected)

The Floorstanding speakers give me enough bass but whenever i feel like shaking the house I turn on the sub.

Oh, I see. Sounds good. Thanks a lot.

I plan on using 8 ohm bookshelf speakers for the fronts, get a center and leave the rears the same.

I also might run a rear sub, but i doubt it (using low-level inputs on the sub itself)

the z-5500 amp is just fine for most anything you'd wanna do, i think....
