Anyway, yes 10 y/o do go to youtube, they watch things, they upload things. If I had a 10 y/o I would hope that I would be able to keep an eye on what they were doing online.

But something like this, where youtube apparently dropped the ball, opening the way for 4chan or anyone to pull this stunt, well, you can be a great parent and be sitting with your child watching what they watch to monitor them and there's no way for a parent or anyone to be ready for something like this. Yes shut browser immediately. But it shouldn't have happened in the first place.

I was taking them apart and putting them back together in those days, not too much internet action going on for me. I remember when I first got my msn.com account when we had dial-up back in the day. Albeit this is a little more recent compared to the 2400 baud days, the internet was still not as booming as it is now.

I played LoRD 1&2, Exitilus, and Usurper when I was 10.

Sadly, x-bit.org has been down for a while last I checked. The only BBS that was up with a really large, active userbase and every BBS game under the sun...

Aside from LORD I also played TW2002, BRE, The Pit, Planets: TEOS, and a little bit of Usurper.

Awhile back I played some of them on a telnet server someone was running, but the name escapes me right now. Once I get some sleep I might look it up.

The only computer we had at home when I was 10 was my stepdads, and he would have killed me if I had taken it apart. I think it was a 386DX/40 at one point.

Anyways most of my tinkering was with DOS. Anyone else remember the art of crafting your config.sys and autoexec.bat files to maximize your conventional memory for games? And it was so cool when we got the Vesa local bus video card....

I still have my old 486DX4/100 for memory's sake. Not only does it have a VLB video card, but a VLB I/O controller card as well. 32-bit disk access in WfW 3.11 (before I loaded 95 on it from the 13 floppies).

I'm pretty sure that keeping your 10 year old off the internet for fear of teh hackers or teh pornz ranks not far below keeping your 10 year old locked indoors for fear of the pedophiles. Boxing in a child from your abstract fears is the definition of uptight parenting. The best a parent can do is prepare the kid for the worst likely scenarios.

That said, anyone reducing 4chan or ebaums crap to "OMG seeing a naked person" needs to get a life beyond trolling.

I got the pop-up message on youtube that day. I looked at the calender, saw july4th, and for some stupid reason I thought it was april fools day. I hit cancel and never found out about the hack until later that day.

on a more serious note, i'm going to agree that 10 year olds shouldnt have free roam of the open internet, and even without script exploits, youtube can be a child unfriendly site. i applaud 4chan for the lulz.
 
It seems to me that there is almost a service here. Not a direct service, 4chan isn't doing this to be nice, or anything. But the end result is people think more about the security of their websites, and that is a good thing. While sending someone to a shock site might scar them a little bit(or perhaps educate them about the real world), in the end the site becomes more secure and prevents the fraud and theft of morons who can't tell when they're being phished.

I guess i shouldn't let my kids go outside, because some looser from 4chan could be walking in my neighborhood and decide to defecate infront of a bunch of children.
The only reason shit like this happens is because people with no morals or ethics think it's ok to post offensive material on a public site.

What it boils down to, is a bunch of basement dwelling geeks, pissed off that this kid get more tail and makes more money than them and they are jealous as hell.

I'm hardly the moral police or anything of that sort, but you don't fuck with kids.

I heard 4chan was behind the Next Bieber Tour survey h4x. Apparently, North Korea jumped from 29th to 1st place. Personally, I think it was a great idea, Kim Jong-il might sentence the little girl to 10 years of hard labor for having a too high of a voice.
