A "decent start menu and start search" exist. Windows +Q from desktop (invoke search charm which defaults to apps when not in somewhere that has its own search bound) and I can see all of them

If I know what I'm looking for I can still pull up the default start search menu by hitting the windows key. It's the best of both worlds.

See above. I can either search (windows key and start typing), engage my grouped icons like your start menu (windows key and click), or see everything (search charm/windows key+q/windows key, type & delete). Best of all worlds?

I don't personally mind Metro, but my "desktop" is a 100" projection screen. I could see it getting old for people using traditional desktop monitors (ie pretty much everyone). I honestly haven't played around with the beta enough to decide how I feel yet but I'll almost certainly be upgrading once it's released. Shiny new things...

I've been using it a lot, and have been... ahem... vocal internally when I run into frustrating things (especially since I generally run on 30" monitors). While I can't get into the details of that, I know of some legitimate pain points and some things that will be a better experience in the future. It's not perfect, I'm not going to blow smoke up your ass and pretend everything is always sunshine and rainbows, but with the changes since Developer Preview and Consumer Preview, I can at least now say the metro experience is at parity or better in most usage scenarios.

It's not like the traditional desktop is going away, it just happens to be a metro tile now. Just think of Metro as a nice looking intro screen when you login.

It's more than that. In that screenshot of my arranged start menu, I can enable live tiles and get information directly on my metro UI, without significant battery drain, resource usage, or security concerns.

The Release Preview, i.e. the Release Candidate comes out the first week of June so expect the RTM in September with hardware on store shelves before Thanksgiving.
