Hello,

Newcomer to the boards here. I am in the process of building a new computer. I have recently bought two 74g 10k rpm raptors. Now I had full intentions of setting them up in raid. But I was clearly mis-led on some issues, and it appears that setting up a system raid 0 for "performance" I thought (completely new to raid, never done it) is a little more invovled than what I originally anticipated. So that leads me to my question. All this computer will be used for is gaming, songs, and some "office work," all I want is performance, is the raid 0 system worth the 300 dollars I shelled out for the two drives? Flame on if you like, but I thought that you buy two drives, put them in their cages, and go into bios to do any configuring, and that is it. But now after reading around the forums in more detail it looks like I have to buy raid array and all this other crap, to be quite frank I don't feel like buying or configuring anything else. I'm ready to turn this beast on. Any info/insight would be MORE than appreciated. Specs are :

AMD athlon 64 x2 3800
Biostar 6100 mobo
2 gig corsair xms ddr 400 (pc3200) 2-3-3-6
XFX geforce 7800 gt
Neopower 480 psu
Zalman 120mm hsf
x-fi sound card
2 10k rpm 74gig hd's
 
You don't "buy" a raid array. You stick the Windows CD in, install the raid drivers, configure the array, and install Windows.
 
I would not raid anything anymore. If you want to raid for backup purposes that's ok but you could of got more for less. Since you have these drives, I say use one for the OS, sell the other one and get some more HDD space for the momey. IMO. :)
 
...and it's not hard to set up RAID. Have your floppy filled with the RAID diskette and press f6 during windows setup--then you'll have all the options on different raid setups.

But since you said it's for gaming and storage of music, I would just go with my other suggestion. You wont miss any speed hits and you can still have your 10000rpm drive running your OS.
 
I have 2 74's...Put the OS on one and all your games, apps and page-file on the other.....Dont bother with the RAID.., its not worth it...
If you need a large amount of storage, it might be worth it to sell one and buy a large storage drive...but thats up to you...

I also have 2 of the new 150's but havent had the time to install them yet, but they wont be raided either...
 
Great, thanks for yalls info. And Pkirk that is what I thought. I was thinking it was that simple, but read around on the forums and made things harder than what they really are. :) Anyhow, will probably just hang on to the other 10k drive, for some other build. :) So one 10k drive with 74gig. Sounds good.
