Ok I'm doing research and gatherin data for my first build. Don't know if this is the right spot for this but I wanted feedback on what I have come up with for my system. I am a newbie at this so bare with me.

Mobo:Asus p5b
CPU:Core 2 Duo E6400
RAM:Corsair DHX XMS2 Dominator 2048mb
GPU:GeForce 7600GT 256mb
Case: Raidmax Sagitta Mid Tower
HDD:Seagate 320gb/7200rpm/16mb
PSU:Ultra/X-Finity 600watt
I would also like to do a water cooling system. I like the big water 735 by thermaltake.
Gonna have dvd writer too. Leaning towards HP's Lightscribe. Just don't know if I want a cd rom also. Gonna throw a 3.5'' internal card reader in there too.

Please give me your input. I'll take all the tips I can get

I'm not gonna start a flame war here.
So, with that said, I'm telling you that I dont know much about Intel.
But, I think you should go with the e6600, for a bit more money.
I've read reviews, and many of my friends & clients have e6600 processors..
Mad overclockers @ a great price - or so they have said.

Just my 2cents.

I see your only real problem and thats the PSU. Get a thermaltake PSU if you want some power. Ultra PSU's are not the best. Other than that great system.

Well if I go with the 6600 what's the max I can oc it. I want blazing speed. But I have to stay within my bugdet. You know how it is. If I go with a water cool system I shouldn't have to worry bout heat too much. I hope. Also do you know how loud the thermaltake psu is. I want a good reliable psu...but don't need to sound like I live next to an airport. :)

Sorry I'm asking so many questions. Like I said I'm new...and I want to get this right.

Dont get the e6600 with a p5b. That board does much better with 6400 and lower.

If you can wait a couple of weeks, aim for the e4300, it's going to a guaranteed beast at overclocking, and will give you much more value.

You'll need a better PSU if you plan on overclocking or not. There are lots of options, so look around. I'd recommend the corsair hx520 if you dont plan on changing your graphics card anytime soon.

I agree that the ram is overpriced. Your choice of Ram should depend on the board youre gonna end up choosing, so i'd decide on that. Newegg runs an OEM p5b deluxe every couple of days for 129.00. Definately a solid deal.

As far as your water cooling situation, DONT DO IT, unless you get quality water products. That thermaltake crap is useless. Youll be much better off with air on that budget. Aim for a scythe infinity or the tuniq tower.

Good Luck

Which mobo is good for oc. I want a board that I could swap out the cpu in the future. The reviews on the e4300 look good. Any idea when they are projected to be released?

I was also building a rig with P5B-e and this core 2 duo 6600, more L2 seemed an advantage. What's the incompatibility you refer to.
Thanks,
LW

I just wanna make sure I have the best board/cpu combo for ocing. The e4300 looks great to oc, just need to make sure I have the right board to get the max. I'm leaning towards the p5b with the 4300. It sounds like they would work great together...according to the reviews I have seen. But Im new at this so I just like to get your oppinons. You guys have for sure been doing this longer than I have. I respect your oppions.

Since the P5B-E and the DS3 are the same price, go for the P5B-E instead. If you want to save some money, the S3 is also a great overclocker for only $110. The E4300 is already out, but costs the same as an E6300. Since its brand new, they're charging a premium for it. Prices are expected to drop by Q2'07, when more new core2duos come out. The E4300 is easier to OC because it has a stock multiplier of 9 (9*200=1.8Ghz). Bump the FSB to 400 and you've got a 3.6Ghz beast. You'll need a tuniq tower/zalman 9500/9700/si-120 or some other great hsf to reach that speed though. All 3 of the aformentioned boards can easily reach 400Mhz FSB.

Oh yah, the 10% performance gain from having an extra 2MB of L2 cache isn't worth the $100 cost unless your system upgrades are far apart (~5yrs). Soon, though, the price of the extra cache won't be much at all.

Go for the P5B-e (stay away from the non-e version) as I can help you OC if if you want :p.

PM me if you wanna take me up on the offer.

The 9500 is a great cooler if you're not going to overclock. If you are, any of the others listed their would be a much better choice.
9700 is excellent as is the Tuniq Tower and Sythe Infinity

This is the water cooling system I'm leaning towards. What do you guys think...yay or nay "Zalman The Reserator 1 Plus Water Cooling System". And yes I will take any offers with help on oc when I get my system complete. Couple more weeks most likely before I am ready to put it together. Thank you all for the tips though.
