Your high end GPU setup @ 1080p "only"?

Hello all,

I'm just wondering how far people would go when using a resolution of 1080p, so if you're running a high-end CF or SLI setup, please post it so I can get an idea.

Reason I'm asking this is because most people on these forums seem to think even a single high end card (like 6970 or 580) would be More than enough at that resolution.

I for example am running a lightning 6970, it's a great card, but I get disappointed at times when I max a game's settings and can't achieve 60fps most of the time(i.e Splinter Cell Conviction or Oblivion with graphic mods + everything maxed, DA2..etc). My aim is really to run my games @ 1080p 60fps with everything maxed at all times.

I plan on running CF 6870 when I finally finish my build so nothing to report yet...

But I do know that oblivion is CPU bound, especially when you add a ton of mods..

Doesn't lag and choppiness begin at less than 30 fps?
No, lag begins at ~70-80ms...

Choppiness is pretty subjective. Some people are fine with 30 (e.g. every console gamer alive), while for others it's borderline unplayable. Consistency makes a big difference too; a steady 50fps is fine for most, but a drop to 50 from 60+ can be pretty jarring.

I game on the rig in my sig at 1080x1200. I JUST added that 2nd 570 to extend the useful life of the graphics cards, I know that I want 60fps in BF3 so that was a major factor too. Crysis 2 runs maxed with high res textures in DX11 mode at 60FPS solid. Without VSYNC I get much higher.

The thing is though that if your going to be playing alot of BF3 you might want less than max graphics settings, in that less foliage and simpler shadows will help you spot enemies easier. In BF2 pulling down the detail but keeping draw distance highest, enemy troops stood out like a sore thumb.

Just occured to me today regards BF3. Compromise between enemy visibility and pwetty gwaphics would be a better way to go than just reach for the very top of all the sliders.

I have an i5 2500k and dual 6870's in crossfire on my HTPC which I also use to play games on my Samsung 67" TV. So far I've been able to play any game with V-sync enabled at 60fps with all graphic options at maximum and usually 8xMSAA or 4xSSAA without ever dropping below 60fps. The Witcher 2 at Ultra Settings will bring it down to mid 30's fps with Ubersampling on but that's really the only exception I've seen so far.

I run a 580 in 1080p maxes all games fine. But my cpu is bottlenecking it a small bit. need to get a 2500k

I just got a 2500k and a 580, use a 23" 1920x1080 monitor. Some people will say it's overkill, but I like 60 FPS. In Crysis 2 (and I'm sure in Rage as well) I get about 50 average on Ultra w/ the texture pack, dips to 40 rarely. I don't really want to be any lower than that. As a bonus, every game other than Crysis runs at 80+ FPS easily.

I regularly play at 1920x1200 on my system in my sig.

Lots of games don't work correctly in NVSurround, or I need a centered HUD to play them correctly.

Basically i got my gtx 470's cheap, like to run bfbc2 on high settings at 1920x1200.

I run BF BC2 on max settings @ 55+ FPS w/ all settings maxed on 2 water cooled GTX 480's (not overclocked) and an I7 940. This is on my 46" Samsung 46c8000 Looks amazing. No slowdown issues.

Overkill my ass. I run two MSI 580 Xtremes at 1080p. Yea, I'm always over 60fps. But in Metro 2033, You can't run 1080p very high, DX11 and have 4xMSAA on anything less than two of these. A 590 might do it, but not all the time. I had the money so i went for it.

Now, I also did plan on going to a 30" 1600p monitor as well, I wasn't going to stick to 1080p all the time, but I can't see myself on anything less than these cards when playing some games. When I go below 60fps, I know it and I can feel it, the further I am away, the more safe I feel. I feel that I don't need to worry about hitting lag and losing an edge in a game.

And we have a Winner! lol

That's exactly how I feel, I too notice a difference when the the FPS drops to high 40s or low 50s and it really annoys me, it's a damn curse I tell you.

I might CF or even Tri-fire my MSI 6970 or wait and see how the new GPUs will perform by the end of the year or beginning of 2012.

You want overkill?

How about trifire 5870s on 1680x1050 for the last 3 months?

All my monitors died except for this one :(

Sounds more like you don't have the hardware to make "pwetty" graphics
