heres the story...

My fathers Dell was working fine, then I try and put a CD in, CD door doesn't open. Hmmmm okay? So rather than restart to fix it I stick a pin in that little hole to pop the door open, door wont open, keep trying and nothing.
Try a restart, upon restart right after BIOS, where it asks me what OS I want to run (Linspire / Window) the door opens. I remove the blank CD (was not blockign the door from opening before) and hit button to close. Okay starting to boot.... door opens, hit button, closes.... 5 seconds later door opens, and the same and the same.
Try another restart, same problem.

So I shut it down, open it up, cough from all the dust, remove CD, open that up (its a Samsung by the way) see nothing suspicious, put top on CD, shut case and power back up.

And now it works seemingly fine.

Any ideas as to what may have happened?
 
Something in there got screwed up, what exactly the cause was is anybody's guess. Drives that want to stay closed are more common than what you described, but neither condition is a big deal.
