Hi gamers,

We’re a group of UC Berkeley students working on a study that will be read by people from several game companies. To better understand the gaming industry, we would appreciate your input on how game companies can improve game play in the future generations of video games.

Your feedback is valuable in helping improve your, your friends’, and future gamers’ gaming experience. Your responses are anonymous and will be kept confidential. They survey is short and should only take a couple of minutes.

Please use the following link to begin the survey: http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/?p=WEB2292ZCY4J42

In appreciation for your time and effort, you will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a $100 Amazon gift card if you complete the survey by April 19, 2009.

Thank you in advance for your participation,
The UC Berkeley Research Team

Done.

Prays for GC and hopes that we won't see any garbage with $1 per map on the market.

Seems to be geared to one type of gamer, 20 hours in a rpg is crazy talk.

filled out

I hope the trend towards micro content is slowed somewhat, nothing can replace the traditional story telling of a nice long 15-20 hour adventure.

Done

20 hours in a rpg craze? Sign me up! lol

Meh, I prefer multiplayer over single any day. I just use the single to get used to the game so I don't get railroaded online.

Filled out, I have a little extra feedback for you as well.

The questions are good, but the three sample given are very poor.
A 2 hour free game is worth playing for the game but no one would ever buy anything for it.
And for some on the listed genres 20 hours is nothing, I would not spend $60 on a 20 hour rpg.

You are also missing an important but often under represented demographic, the simulation/ hobbist. Games like SimCity/ X3/Silent Hunter 4. On the other hand, they match your question set less than RPGs do.

The most important thing to me, something that it seems many publishers and developers do not seem to get is that their customer base is usually happy paying for Additional content. Sins of a Solar Empire's "Entrenchment" micro expansion is a good example of this.
We hate more than anything having to pay for content that should be part of a normal update or part of the game itself. Oblivion's horse armor and RE5's multiplayer are examples of what not to do.
.

Done, but the $ value sort of throws off the questions. I would never pay $59.99 for a new game regardless of content or time; I would wait until the price drops. I would've recommended breaking it into: "full retail price", "half retail price", etc. I found myself rating each answer less because I expect to pay $29.99 for a full retail game right now.

I could see where they were going with it. They should have left actual dollar values off, but instead used what you said. Something for them to think about for their next survey. I answered basically without looking at the dollar value, but instead based on the criteria "do you like pay as you go content." And that answer is no. Give me the whole game when i purchase it.

User generated content or add on modules are fine, as long as they are cheap. But if it should have been part of the original game, then screw that noise! For example, fallout 3 was just fine as released. Being able to add extra stuff later on was just pure bonus as far as i am concerned.

They need to do one on DRM issues. That is my biggest peeve ATM.

I just finished Drakensang. Took me around 60 hours, 29.99$. Alot of fun. :)

RPG at 59.99$ for 20 hours! lol...

what if they applied pay-as-you-go pricing scheme to the character updates in Team Fortress 2... you only pay for the updates you want and for the classes you actually play.

thatd be EXTREMELY homosexual, extremely unbalanced teams, who would want to pay for scout?

If I may, a few questions out of curiosity:

Why is "The UC Berkeley Research Team", or "The Berkeley Gaming Research Team" using a Gmail account?

For what class are you preparing this?

Is your sample comprised purely of gamers using the HardCOP forums?

Thanks,
John

Seemed like a low-brow survey to be coming from a group of Berkely students. I hope this isn't for a Doctorate's Thesis. heh

RPGs are a little tricky because we (RPG gamers) have had some huge games handed to us over the years. I got tired of Oblivion halfway into the game--the kicker is that 'halfway' to me was something like 305 hours into a single character. I did get some of the DLC to check it out but I wound up being disappointed with the content because it was essentially meaningless to the game and didn't make me feel like it was worth any money. Something like a big extension to the world map would have been preferable.

I guess that's partially my point and it's been made upthread: DLC is okay as long as the original content isn't lacking without it AND it makes a significant change to the game. Good luck reconciling those two points.

I filled it out, but I found the questions at the end pretty lacking. I would expect to pay 50 dollars for a game with 30+ hours of content, and I wouldn't even touch the 29.99 game with content you have to pay for.

Done. However, as other has said the next survey leave out $ amounts. I have only paid once or twice for a $59.99 game, I have always waited until the price goes down a little.

That would work... in Korea.
