Your advice please? A/V system upgrade.

Hi, I'm looking into the best route for an upgrade to my home audio tracking and video editing system with a budget in mind. Looking for the smartest (read: bang for the buck upgrade) which I can utilize some/most of my current hardware. Can you offer any adive/tips/links?
I usually build my own and purchase via Newegg.com or local Computer Stop.
Not new to building these, but been out of the "what's new" in the hrdwrupgrade world for a bit.

Details

Use: Home studio DAW system (tracking audio of up to 16 ch at a time and video editing and encoding using Vegas6 (A/V) and Pro Tools MPowered (audio only). Heavy use of plugins (Waves 5.x, DB, etc - DX and soem VST). Light internet use at the most.
I need fast rendering of audio/video.
No PC gaming. Just want a solid fast system upgrade.

Current sys (Yes, I realize it's dated, but it's still chuggin ok, I'd like to utilize all I can with the uprgade):

- epox 4bda mobo with a 1.6a @ 2.4ghz (150mhz bus at 1.6 vcore) *I'm not dead set on OC-able optrions, but i realize that may be the best route for "bang 4 buck". This one is still holding on and has always been quite stable.
- 768 PC2100 ram @ 300mhz (*new upgrade ram min of 2gigs)
- 2 Maudio delta 1010's (10-in/out 24-bit/96khz audio interface ) for 20 in/out) - 2 Pci cards.
- Chaintech Nvidia FX-5200 dual-view video card (AGP)
- Adaptec U160/320 SCSI card ( 1 18gig U160 drive for WinxpPro, applications/plugins, 1 20 gig U160 scsi drive for some a/v recording/temp file work, etc).
- 2 200gig (WD and Maxtor UDMA-5 ata HD's
- 1 80 gig IBM ata HD
- BenQ dd dvd-rw (+/-)
- Netgear Nic (FA310TX) 10/100

Looking for suggestions on the most applicable mobo/processor/ram really. I would like to continue with Intel (although I'm somewhat open to AMD suggestions that I shouldn't overlook).
Interested in any dual-core Intel advice (as well as comparable single-core or OC-able suggestions)
Looking for the best processing speed (with bang for buck in mind) I/O for A/V work, running lots of plug-ins, and most importantly stability. Hopefully for a budget price (not sure on the budget ceiling as of yet).

Wish to avoid anything "VIA" btw.

Thanks for any advice in advance you guys, I know it's HERE on these forums where one can get the most usefull advice.

Help please?

Or a link to a part of this forum (or other site) that might be able to answer?

Go AMD x2? or a Pentium D? - will dual core drastically help a DAW (audio / video editing) system? Or go single core P4 with HT (and possibly OC again?).

thnx
