I am a professional digital designer by day, hardcore gamer by night.

As a designer, color gamut and reproduction is very important to me. Although the latter can be addressed with a colorimeter if it's not perfect out of the box. Other factors include total desktop space and cost. I'm currently spoiled by my triple NEC FP912SB (discontinued) setup, and unfortunately one of them is beginning to near the end of its life. This is after owning a Samsung 19T years ago, and not being happy with its gamut. But perhaps LCDs have come a lot further from early 2000 that it may be worth entertaining the notion.

Because of my graphic design needs, my understanding is that S-IPS panels are the best choice for me. I'm not interested in playing the lottery, so Dell and HP are out. I'm having a hard time confirming LG LCDs, so they're out (I'm not even sure how readily they are available either). With that said, it looks like I'm left with a few NEC models. I see that they have 2 new models out, the LCD2490WUXi and the LCD2690WUXi, pricing in at $1,400 and $1,700 respectively. With either panel, I think I would have enough total desktop space to run with a dual setup so I'm looking at a $3,000 plus investment. Reading this BeHardware review, it seems that the LCD2690WUXi suffers from ghosting a lot more compared to its smaller version, the 20WMGX2. Which is also important to me as I also do motion design. I assume that the LCD2490WUXi is no better than the LCD2690WUXi, so it leaves me with the 20WMGX2.

Considering the 20WMGX2's size, I'll most likely have to run with a triple LCD setup, a $1,800 investment, but certainly better than $3,000. But I'm not sure how wise of an investment this may be. It seems that I may bring out the worse in the LCD. If I stare hard enough at my current CRT, I can see my reflection. I can't imagine how much worse this may be with the glossy screen. I also design through the night in complete darkness, where blacks will turn orange/yellow as read on this forum.

So what options am I left with?
