Hey fellow [H]'s, I was wondering, what is the best possible resolution/settings I can set if I wanted to play WoW? I used to play WoW about 8 months ago on a 9800 Pro and Barton 3200+ w/1GB of ram, but I played at 1024x768. Will this 6800Go be able to scale to a higher resolution (let's say 1440x900 WS on this lappy) provided I buy more system ram without any reasonable slowdown? Also, what res are you guys with 6800's running WoW at and if any AA/AF settings? Thanks.

-P

i'm running wow 1280/1024 with 4xAA and 16xAF, and not a whole lot of lag on a 6800GT

9800Pro
1gig Ram
XP @ 2.2Ghz
1280*1024
Everything maxed

x800xl
1gig ram
A64@2.4Ghz
1600*1200
Everything Maxed

Basically, it doesn't take much to max out this game.

a64 3000+ (no longer oc'd) with 1 gig of DDR400 and an Audigy2 platnum

I could run it at 1280x1024 with everything maxed on my 9800pro 2.4 P4 system just fine... 1gb of ram. /shrug, I dont see why people think WoW is a graphically intensive game...

ram is only a concern with quite a bit of mods, if you run around 3~ and have XP i'd recommend 1gig, if you don't have any mods 512 is just fine

I run alot of mods always they make life easier and you will be running 3+ mods easily if you are use your tradeskills auction house pvp and do raids in an organized guild.

512MB certainly isnt 'fine'. My WoW almost always uses over 400MB of ram all to itself, and that with no mods, ive seen it go well over 450MB before too. Well your not going to fit windows and WoW into 512MB of ram, thats for sure.

For example, i have 2GB of ram, when running WoW, Windows XP and a few background programns like trillian, my total ram usage hovers around 900-1000MB in use, and its gone over 1100MB in use before. Its going to run pants on 512MB, should run fine on 1GB, but if you like to run things in the background while playing, then 2GB sure wouldnt hurt either.

The biggest problem i have with WoW is nvidias craptastic drivers, im getting very tired of my WoW look like im running it in 640*480 because of all the shimmering.

i don't know why your WoW was running in excess of 300megs with no mods, i was having a hard time to break 300 with one mod..

either way, you are going to get shimmering on both cards, the shimmering comes from their ass tastical implementation of AF, tried it on both companies, its not going to get any better..

It's an in-game problem not driver related as both ATI and NVIDA card "shimmers" in WoW...

Terra...

As for the ram issue, i just loaded up wow to chekc it. Its using 288,000KB (281MB) of ram without even moving from the inn im saved in. Running around lakeshire (which is only a tiny town) already has WoW peaking at 330,788KB (323MB). Normally playing for an hour or two with lots of running about will have it peaking at about 490,000KB (478MB).

As for the AF, never heard anything about it before, and wow should just be using the AF of the card, so it shouldnt have anything to do with blizzard, probabaly something else causing it. But regardless, nvidias buggy drivers stop a profile for wow from working, meaning you cant use the high quality mode, TR AA or gamma corrected AA, and this has been present for at least 4 driver sets now.

whats a good place for WoW mods? A friend finally convinced me to get it to play with him.
I remember hearing that there is a good main ui mod that replaces the default one. I think it was cosmos or somethin? any input on that, and whats a good site for mods?

curse-gaming banned me or something for trying to download two things within however much time...fun stuff.

Yeah WoW can use almost 2GB. I had memstatus running and i'm on a really crowded server, going into Org. loads all those players. So for those who feel the "orgrimmar lag", that's just because you probably only have 1GB of mem. If you're outside or in an instance, it tends to be under 1GB. It's just a direct function of how many PCs are in your vicinity. The Tarren Mill/Southshore royal rumble also comes to mind for massive amounts of ppl in a small area.

6800GT here and I run WoW at 1680x1050 WS with most of the eye candy turned on just fine. I highly recommend 1 gig of memory also, as stated above.

I run it at 1920x1200 with 2XAA using the system in my sig. It runs just fine

3200+ winchester, 2gb ddr, 7800gt OC'd, WD 74gb raptor

I run WoW at 1680x1050, all settings maxed out.

No stuttering or anything even in IF. Highest FPS i've seen is around 85-95fps...lowest has been ~40fps (IF)

I tried running Wow using 512, 768 and 1g of ram a little while ago to see the results ( I was wanting to move some ram over to my second machine). All using OCZ EL plat 400 ram running at 450mz.1 stick 512 and 2 256s.

I played for a couple days with 512 ram with 2 mods and was generally fine if I stayed out of any towns and raids lol. IF was frustrating as hell jsut trying to get to the AH and even small empty towns caused frame lag. Playable if you can handle a lot of frustration in towns and arent into larger groupings. Doing the 20 man Order must be restored raid was a prime example of being totally useless in a group cuzz of lag.

At 768 ram and 3 mods It got way better. IF was generally smooth except for the highest populated times, could raid and function normally anywhere. This was very playable.

Now back to my usual 1g ram everything is perfect with 3 mods running. All graphics maxed.

To say you need or should have 2 g seems like overkill unless ur doing a lot in the background.

P.S. using a A64 3200 @ 2.44 , X800GTO2 modded to X850 XT PE.

Current specs (sigh, have all hardware for a new system, except the case, which I was going to build myself, maybe a ghetto case over thanksgiving...):
5900XT
AMD2600+
1GB KVR

Running 1920x1200 (2405) without AF or AA and it runs just fine.
WoW looks like a cartoon no matter what, just turn the AF/AA gimmicks off and you will be happier for it.

It's true, diminishing returns comes into play as you go over 1gb. But for most of us on these forums, 2gb is a must simply for the enthusiast factor. I personally would never build another machine with less than 2gb simply because I like the way everything feels so much smoother overall. It really helps with BF2, not so much WoW. But also just in Windows it seems smoother and quicker, i don't know that just might be me. I can certainly have more things open, that's for sure...Firefox, AIM, winamp, photoshop, WoW, Dr. DivX, Fraps, etc. all at once and my computer is still asking for more.

So who said you SHOULD have 2GB for wow? 2GB sure doesnt hurt, hell im using 1.2GB of ram right now with wow in the background, messengers open and a browser open so having 2GB sure wont hurt the game any, but no its certainly not required, and it will run fine on 1GB as long as you keep background stuff down.
