No seriously, I'm putting together a new AMD rig and need to know which card to get. I'm not going SLI so there is no preference on either ATI or nVidia. So which should I go for? (PCIe by the way)

x800 XL
6800 GT
6800 Ultra
X850 XT

Forgot to put in on the poll but what about the 6800 ultra?
 
x850 XT perfect for Half Life 2 ! but still runs Doom 3 great !
6800 GT perfect for Doom 3 ! but still runs Half Life 2 !
x800 XL or do you mean XT because the XL dosen't even come close to the 850 XT or the 6800 GT.

In some things, but in some cases slower. The cards are comparable in most instances, but early reports say that X800XL's don't overclock worth a crap and nearly every 6800GT can reach Ultra speeds.
 
you can easily reach Ultra speeds with the GT, and it has SM 3.0

i have one, it's great
 
Just so you know, SM3.0 is useluss, and HDR is NOT SM3.0. By the time SM3.0 is utilized greatly by game makers, the R520 and NV70 (or G70, cant remember which) will be out, so worrying about SM3.0 right now is pointless.

If money isnt and issue, get an X850XT, and OC it as far as it can go. You WILL NOT be dissapointed.

Not everyone can upgrade every cycle, so the more stuff a card has on it NOW, the better it will fair LATER.
 
Best card you can go for there is the X850XT and clock it up to the PE like some have said and you will have the best card for your highest dollars, but did u look into the most 1337 thing SLi, look into that, not much more then a X850, like duel 6800GTs....Flashed to ultras of-course and Water cooled by DD

Nah, I'm not going to do the SLI thing. It's useless to me since I don't game over 1280x1024.

By the time that games do start using it, they will be a fair bit more graphically advanced, that not even an Ultra will get thet fantastic FPS (like 40FPS or something like that)

As said, get the X850.
 
seems like no one likes the XL or no one is actually using it....I wonder why...
 
So u want no SLI...don't play games higher than 1280x1024.....x800XL
get that...since if you play at that res.the fastest cards will just be cpu limited most of the time anyways....getting an x850xt would be overkill :) it's x800XL for the low cost..or the 6800gt for a little more, but you will have more features...either is fine :) but newegg does have the x850xt(pe?) for around 499 :)
 
Okay I've narrowed it down between two cards. I'm not going to do the x850 xt due to I don't want to pay that much. So it's down between a EVGA 6800GT and the BBA x800xl. Which one would you chose? It's a 100 difference also. Does anyone have the XL? Is it a good card? What will it play HL2 at? (AA AF at 1280 x 1024 and Settings)
