I have just gathered enough part for another computer

SPECS:
AMD Duron 1.2GHz
EPoX 8RDA+
256MB Crucial PC-2100
ATi 32MB Radeon 7000
Onboard nVidia Sound
Onboard nVidia nic
Seagate Barracuda 20GB 7200RPM
Toshiba DVD-ROM
3.5" Floppy
Antec SLK-1600 mini-tower w/Antec 400w pp403x PSU

Not sure what to do with it yet...will probably end up selling it...I'm into it about $150 though, so I might just end up getting a 4 port KVM (I only have a 2 port now) and hook it up along with my main rig and test b0x.

Not really much of a point here I guess, but thought it was worthy of a post :)
 
I think you may be typical of a lot of us here. I have three unused mainboards and enough memory, drives, etc. to build three more rigs, but why? How many can we use at once? Some people fold with them, but then there is the space problem. Where we you going to put them all? We could give them away to less fortunate friends, but then we would have to maintain them forever. We could sell them, but then we would end up taking more stuff in on trade. The inventory wouldn't be any less, now would it?
..Tell the truth. ;)

This is a compulsive hooby that should include a storage locker somewhere in the mix. :D
 
More computers also equals higher electricity costs. I have the same problem and keep only one main box and a secondary to act as my stereo just so my roommates won't try to prorate the electricity bill based on individual consumption, haha.
 
that was me last week , built another 2.2ghz barton box with all the extra crap i had around.
kvm'd it to my main rig , and it just sits there.
suppose one could make a server , but serving what to whom?

i also have this weird desire to put 2 complete PC's together into one box :p
(i have a 32" modded pentium 2 server case which houses my main rig)
 
I have a friend that uses his spare pc as a linux firewall. He has 2 nics in it. So it is connected directly to his dsl line, then the other nic is connected to his router for his network. It packet forwards everything to his lan. It doesn't take a very powerful pc to be a firewall either, and linux has very powerful firewall software. Also, he uses it as a dedicated server for games. You don't need a very powerful video card for a dedicated server, just alot of ram and a decent speed cpu.

that would be pointless for me since my router has a nat and port forwarding.
 
Well, the linux firewall functionality is usually more powerful than your standard 4 port linksys router w/ built in firewall for instance. You can not only monitor what comes into your network, but you can monitor what goes out. I know with my linksys router, I can only log what comes into my network, not what my computer is sending out. Sometimes spyware companies will install itty bitty apps on your system that send out a signal to some remote server somewhere, that's why it would be nice to monitor outgoing activity as well as incoming.
 
Put it all together today...took some pics. It's NOT running however :(
The PC-2100 I put in is ECC and the board won't support it...going to have to find another stick.

Pretty plain looking but clean inside and out (at least I hope so). I decided to go floppyless for now...I'm going to see if everything I want to do, including BIOS flashes can be done with CD's :)
 
My ram should be here today...outpost.com (fry's) didn't have any detailed info on it...it will be interesting to see my $54 stick of 512MB PC-3200 :)
