My GF's parents need a new pc since their Pentium 233 machine finally died. They claim that they wont be doing any gaming, but I think if they see a couple games like Age of Empires, the Sims, or Rise of Rome then they will be hooked. They will definatly be doing budgeting on this machine, and possibly some kind of blue printing software (he is in construction, and yet again if I introduce him to a more efficient way of doing it I think he will love it).
Where can I save around $200 on this system? I might see about buying some used components if I cant get down under $500 with new stuff.
Heres the hardware I found on Newegg:

Ceap case - $15
Gigabyte GAK8NS Ultra 939 - $116
Radeon 9600pro - $106
300W Antec - $34
Athlon 64 3200+ Winchester - $219
Mushkin 512MB pc3200 - $70
80gb wd800jb - $58

jeez 939 for a budget system? wth?
im building a performance system around the socket A platform. you need to look at a high end socket A stuffs, theres still some life left in the socket A boards. here check out my thread and see what I mean. that pc im upgrading to will perform extremely well (actually will prolly perform better then what you are putting together there) and is not near as expensive as what you have there.

NOTE! Enlight PSUs are worthy of keeping and running. dont bother replacing them unless you are running a system with tons of addins, they can handle a lot more then people think. That is yet another reason I run enlight cases.

I seriously doubt your GFs Parents will get hooked playing Rise of Rome, The only people older than 40 that I know that play video games play puzzle games or such, the most exciting of which is zuma (www.popcap.com). So ditch the radeon 9600 and choose a Socket A mobo with integrated video (possibly the ASUS A7V400-MX), buy a 2500+ Mobile and blam I just saved you like $200-300. Also maybe put a little more cash into the case, nobody likes an eyesore :p.

I agree. Thats a total and complete waste of money to build your GF's parents a machine with an Athlon 64 in it. I think its pretty safe to say they aren't gamers and even if they were an Athlon XP will hold up to a casual game or two.
 
Duh.:rolleyes: they 'hold up fine' to even more then a casual game, I know from experience. I can run even the newest games just fine on my box right now. Just look at the specs in the system in the thread I posted, its just about perfect for a budget system... but performance is stellar for the price.

By the way, if you gotta go with integrated video, check out the chaintech micro ATX nForce board, at least they will have a half decent video solution that way if they do decide to play a good game or two and it wont cost much. it will still cost less then that asus suggested.

And whats with this 'I saved you $200-300' crap? I think I was the first one to suggest ditching the 939? men.
 
Bet they would love SFF.

I would also try to get a rebate deal on a hard drive. Outpost has a lot of rebates on 8mb cache drives, you might be able to get a lot more than 80gigs for around $60.

I bet you could get a good shuttle nForce2 ultra 400 based box and sempron or something cheap...

Well I figured since I had suggested some actual components I had done some saving.
But sorry if you felt like I was trying to steal your thunder jagie, I guess I must have been hopped up on testosterone :p

how about "I just saved you $106" ? dah well, point is socket A is super cost effective and definitely the way to go so far as a budget system. SFF is cool and will definitely add a wow factor but will usually add a $100 or so dollars so there goes the $$$ you saved on getting rid of the mid-high end video card.

actual components? I was suggesting he look in the thread I had, and choose some somewhat like I had. they are about right for his purpouses too... I did post a link...
 
Definitly socket A and AMD Mobile 2400, 2500, or 2600+ that is the way to go. I build my daughter a system with a 2600+ and everything else under $500.00.
 
Good luck getting your GF's grandparents to play games. I still haven't been able to get my grandparents to attempt to use a computer, let alone buy one and play games on it.
