so i recently threw together another file server. keepin things easier by seperating file servers, games, video, apps/drivers/utils

well my latest beast is up and i KNOW im underpowering her...the specs are as follows

550mhz p3 katami
some hp board, pulled from work pc
512mb pc 133 sdram
pci ata100 card
pci sata card
pci nic

2 80mm case fans

and hard drives
8gb for os
300gb
and 3 250gb's

its right now sitting on a 300watt PS and since is is an older system what would i want to focus on while still providing enough power for my disks

so any suggestions on a new PS? preferably a quiet one, price isnt too much of a problem, keep it maybe $60 or less, if thats feasible

off to the online shops i go now while i await some reccomendations

You'll want a single-rail PSU here; the p3 is drawing all its power over the 20 pin connector, so a dual rail power supply would essentially leave one rail completely unused. That's bad for the life of the PSU. That said, my recommendation is this. 350 watts, Enermax, 26A@12V, 32A@5V, 32A@3.3. Max 185W on the 3.3+5. That 26A isn't happening (that's 312 watts by itself!) but you won't take more than about 5 during high seeks and 10 during the first 2 seconds of startup. If you ever move to a "larger" system with more disks or a faster processor etc you may want to move to a larger PSU, but this should suffice for as long as you use the named setup. It's a little more than $60, but only a little - $64.
