I own a D40 with the kit lens, even have a sigma 10-20mm lens for it. It's nice but way too big for doing outdoor activities such as biking, hiking, etc.

So I'm looking for a P&S camera. After doing research I've came to the conclusion that the CANON POWERSHOT SD880 IS is the best option.

Any thoughts or opinions before I purchase this?

I have the SD870IS and love it, so I would recommend anything in the canon SD8xx line :)

Canon Powershots all the way. They are THE best P&S cameras.

I have tons of friends/family with them and they all are extremely happy with them. Even though you have a Nikon, do not go for a Nikon P&S, have not had a very good track record in my family (gone through 5 or 6 of them and once replaced with canon powershots....no more issues).

look into the panasonic lumix LX3. you didn't say what type of P&S your looking at, compacts only?
