I know you guys get alot of these, and I've spent quite a bit of time looking over them, but I could use a bit of help with my specific situation. Price range is around $100, currently no amp.

My priorities are gaming, comfort, and music in that order and while I am by no means an audiophile, I wouldn't want to completely sacrifice music for any of the others. I could live without pounding bass though. I do have a desktop mic but I much prefer a uni-directional mic so a built in mic is a plus.

After looking through this forum for quite awhile, I think I've narrowed it down to:
AD-700
Beyer mmx 1
Steelseries 5h

I haven't been able to find any good reviews on the Logitech g35s but I would assume I'd be sacrificing quality for all of the little extras that I can live without.

On a side note...do the beyer mmx 300s sound half as good as they look? If I recall, someone said they were just another headphone with a mic attached.

Sorry to sound like a broken record, but no headphone is better then the AD700 for under 100. Amazon is selling for for 78.00. And a owner reported that using a 75 ohm adapter made it sound even better. I should be getting my 75 ohm adaptor next week.

I dunno about "no headphone"...and absolutely not if we're including used...but certainly so among the batch you've listed.

I think I remember reading that the AD700's lacked a rich/full sound, but had an amazing soundstage and all the rest. I can't find the post but I remember reading that on head-fi. Is there any truth to this? I mean I'm not going to be very picky as a non-rich, non-audiophile but I'd just like to hear another opinion. Also, if this is true, is that what the increased impedence adaptor is for? Would adding the adaptor increase the need for an amp?

And ashmedai. Are used headphones worth looking at? I've never been really careful with my headphones so they never last me all that long (which will prolly change when I spend $100 on them). I saw a DT770 on ebay for around $100 but I'd rather not have to go back to the POS I'm using now if they die while I'm at school next fall/spring.

Good headphones tend to be a great deal more durable, and the people who are into them tend to take pretty good care of them on top of that. Most of my audio gear is used. Getting it off eBay or the like is a little dicey, yes, but from the FS/FT section here or at Head-Fi? Great way to stretch your budget.

Well I'm in no rush. If I could find a DT770 in my price range, how does that compare to the AD700? I've heard the consumer version is the way to go.

Going used is the best way to go.. Nearly half of my headphones are used.. Rich/full sound? Wouldn't say lacks, just not heavily present. They are a bit recessed with a colored mid range.. The 75 ohm adapter does improve on the AD700s sound.. &, yes, you would need an amp with a little more power.. But you should still hear the benefits.

The DT770 is nice if you want a closed phone. However - amplification becomes a problem, especially compared to the AD700. If you just want closed, switching to an A700 or one of the JVC HARX knockoffs might be better. But if you're going to be using a discrete amp or have a card with abnormal capabilities like the Essence STX, the DT770 might be worth considering.

In most cases and assuming open is good for you - the AD700 is an easy choice.

Let me clarify,
New & dynamic.

You and your orthos. :D

Alright, thanks for all the help I think I got it figured out. Was between waiting till I could afford an amp + the dt770/880 or going with the ad700 now, and honestly I think I prefer open headsets anyways so I'll go with the ad700s.

Would anyone have a suggestion for a decent uni-directional mic, or I suppose an omni-directional that picks up very little background noise? I currently have a desktop logitech mic and whenever i use it, I'm told I sound like I'm talking into a can. I always hear the zalman recommended but I'm pretty sure thats an omni mic.

Where do you get a 75 ohm adapter from? Thanks.

Byer DT 770 off of ebay brand new for 100-130

VERY GOOD, regardless of what persons might say, if you listen to music with bass and game often I doubt you cannot beat them. Mids arnt as good as they should be, however EQ bass reduction helps bring them up to par.

Got mine off Ebay..But I thought it was 1/4.. It's 1/8, so I need to use another adapter (1/4) to listen with my receiver. I paid 20.00. I would be wiling to let it go for 11.00 shipped if interested.

Someone above recommended the Sennheiser PC350 and I'd second this, I use them. The detail of the sound is very impressive, and they have an almost "spacious" realistic feel when it comes to shooters. Difficult to describe! But great sound...

Good short review of them here: http://www.itreviews.co.uk/hardware/h1607.htm

If I have a soundcard that outputs around 35 ohm (audigy 2 zs, I think that's right), then will a 75 ohm still make it sound better? Or will it only sound better if the source is lower?

from the pictures the AD700 seem like they won't cover the whole ear? the HARX900 seem to have bigger holes?

I need a headphone that covers the whole ear, otherwise they are very painful after long periods of time.

is the AD700 better for gaming than the logitech z5500?

A while back before the HARX phones, we used to recommend these Koss SB40 jobs as a cheap solution for gaming. Those are easily better than the z5500s. The HARX are easily better than the SB40s. And the AD700s are easily superior to those.

So, yeah...that.

I have some A900s. They're huge. Cups that are the size of a CD-ROM, possibly larger. I have a big head and big ears and they're the most circum circumaurals I've ever tried on. Any larger and I'd be wearing a helmet instead.

Not the AD700s...but I think they're the same size. The HARX are roughly knock-offs of the A700/900 phones, so they likewise have huge cups.

Yeah, it all depends what you want. Open, closed, bass, big sound stage. I had the AD700 for about 2 months, before I got the HARX700. I loved the AD700's, but the fullness of the RX700 was better for me, and more bass. AD700 wins with the more clarity and bigger sound stage, but I couldn't go back listening to the AD700 personally.

But the AD700 are great phones, there are also the A700/A900 which are closed type. I'd say listen to the options you have first. I know the RX700 is better for music (apposed to the RX900), but for gaming, not a clue. I think the RX900.

But if it's all just for gaming, the AD700 has a huge sound stage, would definitely just go for that.

It sounds like you would have been better with the A900s like me...the HARX give a very good approximation of them though.

These days, I use my DT770s (or ELTs) for gaming. Once you get into good equipment, it is a preference thing more than anything else.

Go with the JVC HA-RX900's. I got rid of my ATH-A900's for them and they blow them away when it comes to gaming and music. I had my ATH-A900's for 2 years before I sold them.

I've got the AD700s and the AD900s and, as ashmedal said, they're huge. Both are great cans but I've now got my eyes on the AD2000s

from what I understand, the mmx 300s are 770s with a mic. I'd just get AD700s if I were you.

Look at the holes on the earcups on both, the HARX900 looks as if it could fit the entire ear in it, while the AD700 looks very small hole.
