Hi, I'm setting up a ESXi server, as I'm retiring my old XenSource all-in-one.

I want to install ESXi on a raid1 solution, but my MB P8B-E/4L only has a onboard softraid (LSI Megaraid) which I don't think works with ESXi.
I also have two 3Ware 9650SE-12ML that I can use for passthrough.
What kind of cheap raid1 controller should I use for installing ESXi / local datastore?

Suggestions and inputs are greatly appreciated!

A cheap controller which works out of the box with ESXi and raid1 would be the IBM M1015 - our ESXi install and main datastore is on a raid1 array in one of these and it does the job well for ~$70.

2nd the recommendation for Dell Perc cards. They can be found used for very reasonable prices. Make sure you do a little research before buying since they can come with accessories like coolers and memory expansions.

Also, if you can swing it, go with RAID 10. RAID 1 bottlenecks quickly if you have a bunch of guests using the disk at the same time. (Obviously this varies depending on what you are using guests for.)
