yet another clicking hdd

I'm having a strange problem with my hard drive. It seems to make a single clicking noise, but only after certain actions. The click only happens when I access certain websites, or if I run a maintenence program (it happens without fail everytime I run Spybot, Avast, and XP's built-in defragmenter). All the research I've done seems to suggest that my hdd could be on the brink of failure, but I'm not so sure this could be the case with mine. The click sounds exactly like the sound a 56k modem makes right before it dials out. No, I don't have a modem, but my mobo does have an onboard modem device. Occasionally, it isn't even a click, but more like a chirp, which I can only describe as similar to the sound your PC speaker makes when you access sticky keys in windows XP via hotkey (try it.. press shift 5 times in rapid succession). The hdd is a 200GB Seagate 7200.8. I've run chkdsk from DOS, window's scandisk, and the utilities that came with the hdd, but none of these programs report an error. Any ideas.. or should I start saving up for a replacement? Also, is there a better hdd diagnostic software that I can and should be use?
 
1st! Always have your important data backup! backup! backup!

The clicking is a strong sign of a dying harddrive. Just treat yourself to a larger harddrive. I would suggest that you stay away from Maxtors.
 
my freakin' drive is clicking too. Cant stand hard drives, keeps failing. jus ordered the 320gb perpendicular seagate hard drive. lets see how long this hard drive last.

Check your power supply and cooling situation. That's likely the issue if you've had multiple failures.

Try SpeedFan, which will report SMART values.

computer in an air conditioned room and I have an all new PSU and motherboard, CPU, ram, everything really. and drive still died. so dont know :-/. really tired of spending money on hard drives

What model and make is your power supply? Quality of "500 watt" power supplies varies widely from brand to brand. And what are temps in your case like? Bad airflow will lead to deaths a lot faster than you'd think. Check voltages with a multimeter rather than software, too - the software can be badly calibrated, leading to readings that look better or worse than reality.
