I am looking to finally build a new computer to replace my ancient P4.

I am looking at:

no major gaming the most advanced I would get would be Diablo 3 when it comes out. Other than that, it would be simple RPGs and strategy games. Don't like FPS's. Also, will be doing occasional virtualization (to experiment with other OS) and dual boot CentOS and Windows.

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?

See build list above, but yes case, power supply, cpu, RAM, motherboard, graphics card, hard drive, dvd, and windows.

19" widescreen 1440*900 resolution, might eventually add a second 19"

1 to 2 weeks (unforeseen Chirstmas money became available)

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? etc.
nothing really fancy, would like 6-core support and DDR3 8 - 16Gb of RAM support for future upgrading.

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?
no, buying new one.


Made some hardware changes, and will be buying in the next two weeks.

If virtualization is a priority for you, you should be looking at one of the Athlon II quad-cores.

For $10 more the WD2500AAKS, the Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB HDD is available. However, you have to use a discount code (which may require you to sign up for NewEgg's e-newsletter, which I believe is worth the savings) that expires on Monday.

The Cooler Master case is available with free shipping at Amazon. However, the Cooler Master PSU is unacceptable for long-term use. Go with either the Antec Earthwatts EA-380D or the NEO ECO 400C instead.

Most likely it will be after Christmas like January/February.
 
Revisit this thread two or three weeks before you plan on ordering parts. Anything that we recommend now may be outdated, overpriced, or out of stock by the time that you start buying parts.

No the budget has not changed, still would be $500 - $550 shipped.

Is this build's primary focus gaming, virtualization, or dual OSes?

$550 is cutting things very close for a machine capable of performing all three tasks well, especially since you need a full PC tower and a copy of Windows.

I will play the occasional game but like I said nothing major the biggest game I am looking forward to playing is Diablo 3 when it comes out. I want to be able to dual boot into Cent and 7 s0 I can practice/learn CentOS. Forget about virtualization.
